Aztecs narrowly lose unbeaten run

 Aztec U18’s 2 Neatherseale St Peter 3

Aztecs 28 league game unbeaten run finally ended in a battling encounter between two well-matched sides. This was a hard fought affair and a spectacle for the ‘independent’ fan.

Neatherseale took the lead early on with a well-taken drive inside the post. Aztecs had plenty of the game with Charles Mann and Sam Froggatt almost grabbing that deserved equaliser. Richard Archer and Dave Ebbrell both tested the keeper who was in outstanding form and the first half ended 0-1.

Aztecs pressed hard in the second half but came up against a determined defence. Adam Lomas despatched a series of free kicks but unusually Aztecs couldn’t make the most of the pressure. Tom Cresswell and Alex Drummond fought tenaciously in midfield but against the run of play Neatherseale snatched a second.

Undeterred, Aztecs fought back with Ross Hunter and Callum Redfern overlapping on both flanks and Tom Cresswell got his just reward when he cracked in a low drive for 1-2 and the game was now certainly on.

Will Tomkinson made a number of telling runs on the right and when the ball broke to Mann he chested it down and hit a spectacular 25-yard volley into the roof of the net to make it 2-2.

Aztecs launched a series of attacks and took the lead, only to have the goal ruled out for an infringement. Lady luck was on the away teams side when they were given a disputed penalty with 10 minutes remaining, which they despatched for 2-3.

With minutes remaining Harry Wibberley and Liam Walton- Gibson pushed forward to try and grab an equaliser, with keeper Billy Akers striking the free kicks, and in the dying moments Drummonds header was held on the line by the away keeper yet again.

As they say a good team bounces back and this Aztec team surely will. Just need to win the next 17 games and the titles theirs.

Ashbourne Aztecs Juniors u9’s        2

Heanor Juniors u9’s                           1

The honors could have gone to either team in this top of the table clash, but it was Aztecs who managed to clinch the award.  The first 10 minutes provided a lot of action for both goalies, as Heanor and Ashbourne attacked each other’s areas, but it was Ben Johnson for Aztecs who stood out, grasping the shots and going bravely ‘one on one’ with Heanor’s striker.   The first goal for the home team was set up by Charlie Land for Tyler Burton, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net with his left foot.  This lifted the team; they were now on fire, battling to achieve a second. First Charlie Land, then Luke Zona and finally James Donlan who tried, even from the floor, to hook the ball around the post and into the net.  George Martin was clearing Heanor’s attempts at goal at the other end, whilst Josh Lee was putting in all the tackles.  Adam Leigh was brought on in midfield and was instantly making his ‘mark’ on the match feeding the balls through for the strikers, taking the throw- in’s and helping out the defence.  Josh Lee for Ashbourne was awarded a free kick which may have found the back of the net on its own, but Luke Zona was on the line making sure it went in, a great combination gave Aztecs a 2-0 lead.  Heanor also gained a free kick but theirs went just wide of the post.  As half time approached, Heanor almost pulled a goal back as the ball flew past 3 defenders and it was only the alert Ben Johnson in Aztecs’goal that managed to stop the ball in its tracks.  Second half Heanor came out all guns blazing; Aztecs couldn’t afford to sit back for a minute. Toby Ainsworth was subbed on to help out Ashbourne’s defence and he did his job perfectly.  He was instructed to clear the ball instantly from the danger area and this was exactly what he did to a tee.   Josh Lee took a long range shot at goal from the half way line, but Heanor’s keeper grasped the shot admirably.  A lapse of concentration on Ashbourne’s part meant Heanor were able to score their first, the striker chipping the ball over Aztecs’ goalies head.  James Donlan re-entered the pitch for the second time and played his part defending his goal in the closing stages along with Josh Lee and Toby Ainsworth.   Players and spectators have never been so relieved to hear that final whistle blow and Aztecs achieve the 3 points keeping them top of division 1.  Man of the match Ben Johnson.

Team:  James Donlan, Tyler Burton, Charlie Land, Luke Zona, George Martin, Adam Leigh, Ben Johnson, Josh Lee, Toby Ainsworth.

Aztecs under 10’s     4

Allestree Benefica    0

Ashbourne cruised into the last 4 of the cup with an outstanding display in this quarter final.  From the start Ashbourne dominated possesion with captain Kye Gordon, Will Topham, Liam Warner and Jake Ridley dominating the Allestree midfield.  Jack Bill was in charge of defence, Lee Cranstone was ‘solid as a rock’ in goal saving with ease what little he had to do, but it was the electric pace and beautiful balance and control of Elliot Murray up front for the Aztecs which kept them in total control of the game.  It was only the brilliance of the Allestree goalkeeper that kept the Aztecs out until inevitably Elliott Murray opened the scoring. Once more the keeper kept out efforts from Murray, Warner, Ridley and Gordon before a double substitution by Aztecs brought Jo Reed and Mathew Pepper into the game.  These two slotted in superbly and just after half time they combined for Jo Reed to make it 2 nil.  Soon after Elliott Murray finished superbly to make it 3 then he raced away to complete a memorable hat-trick. Aztecs then saw out the remaining minutes with ease, this was a great all round display, all 9 players fully played their part.

Team: Lee Cranstone, Jack Bill, Kye Gordon(capt), Liam Warner, Will Topham, Jake Ridley, Jo Reed, Mathew Pepper & Elliot Murray.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards 2

Duffield Dynamo Pumas       4

Ashbourne Aztecs leopards took on Duffield Dynamos Pumas in the quarter-final of the Ken Oxford Memorial Cup. Both teams started brightly and it was a good fair tussle for possesion .
The Leopards looked solid and safe at the back with Aaron Kingaby in goal in fine form. He made a couple of early saves to keep the game at 0-0. Ben Pattinson and Will Birkett were also tackling well and finding their team mates with some fine passing.
The leopards were slowly taking control of the game. They were forcing the Duffield defence to work hard to prevent a goal. But it was Duffield who scored first. A Duffield corner was cleared to the edge of the box and it was cooly smashed into the roof of the net 1-0.
Leopards kept their heads up and continued to press for an equaliser. A good clearance by Will Birkett on the half way line resulted in him being injured so was replaced by Tommy Cokayne . Tommy got straight into the game with some tough tackling. Alex Cheetham was in fine form on the left side of attack and was unlucky not to grab a goal. But it stayed the same score’ til half time.
The centre of pitch was being controlled excellently by Leo Cooper who was finding the forwards with precise passing. Taylor Platt was making the Duffield defence work hard, the centre forward was also getting plenty of chances to shoot.
A break down the right by Calum Wood saw him drift past 2 defenders and fire a low shot into the net 1-1. Sam Glossop now replaced Taylor Platt up front and got stuck in. Sam had a number of shots but they were saved by the goalkeeper. Duffield gained a free kick in a dangerous position. The Duffield player took a direct shot at goal and Aaron Kingaby did well to get his hands to it but could not prevent it from going in 2-1. The leopards continued to battle for another goal themselves but with pressing for a second goal they left players unmarked. Unfortunately Duffield scored 2 more goals to make it 4-1. To their credit the leopards carried on playing well and searching for more goals. An attack started by Leo Cooper and Calum Wood was cleared to Taylor Platt who smashed it into roof of the net 4-2. Aztecs still pushed for more goals but alas they ran out of time.

This was an outstanding performance from all 9 players. They played and battled well. They were equally as good as Duffield. They were excellent from start to finish and were unlucky to be knocked out of the cup. It was an enjoyable match and each player should be proud and happy with their performance. Coaches Paul and Lee are so pleased with every player’s effort. This was a great achievement to get to last eight of this competition. Well played lads, we didn't deserve to be knocked out.

ASHBOURNE AZTEC JAGUARS U10........1

LITTLE EATON DIAMONDS.....................2

In this evenly fought contest the Jaguars would have to dig deep to beat this physically strong side. After many great saves from Jake Stafford, Diamonds took the lead from a corner that the Jaguars just could not clear.

Jaguars applied some pressure of their own and shots from Kai Kirkpatrick and Tom Wright were both stopped by the Diamond’s keeper. Good work in midfield by Tyler Thraves and Liam Wibberley with defensive clearances from Jo Brooks and Jake Wheeldon kept the score down. Jake Stafford in the Jaguar's net had an outstanding 1st half.

Jaguar's made some changes in the 2nd half but Diamonds had their 2nd goal when their forward was left unmarked to slot home. Stafford was still busy stopping everything else they could throw at him.

Tom Green and Josh Taylor-Grout worked hard in midfield with Callum Riley and Charlie Scattergood in defence. Runs from Jamie Edwards up front put Diamonds defence under pressure and this seemed to spur Jaguars on. A long run from Charlie Scattergood saw him on the edge of their box and with a great piece of skill put the ball in the top corner. Jaguars picked up their game after this and could have scored again but still had to rely on Stafford in their net to make more excellent saves.

Man of the Match went to Jake Stafford.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s           2

Littleover Villa Under 13s                4

Aztecs were unlucky to end up on the losing side in an evenly fought match against the current league leaders. The first half display was a marked improvement on the previous week, with much tighter defending, especially from Jack Dean and Dan Lee on the left hand side. After some even early exchanges, Littleover pressed the play with some neat overlaps on the flanks and some dangerous runs by their pacy forwards and attacking midfielders. But Ashbourne were equal to the task with some great tracking back by Billy Owens, Josh Dutton and Will MacDonald Lowe. Charles Owens was also back to his best, linking up the play with some lovely touches to Matt Griffiths and Liam Scott on the wings. Then a cross came in from Villa which goalkeeper Conor Sherry punched clear. It seemed to be safe but the rebound crept over the keeper’s body to make it 1-0. The home team then went close again with a shot which came back off the crossbar. Aztecs came back with some lovely passing moves, as Dutton and Griffiths set up a chance for Owens, whose shot was tipped round the post by the opposition keeper. They then suffered another setback when an unstoppable low shot was rifled in just before half-time. Again, Aztecs’ heads did not go down and they retaliated with several runs and shots by Scott, who was causing problems for the Villa defence. After the break, Ashbourne were re-energised and enjoyed some tidy possession. Ross Keeling was finding himself in more forward positions, setting up Scott for more attempts at goal. Aztecs then struck back with two quick goals. Griffiths set Sam Birks free and his precision shot was tucked beneath the keeper. Griffiths was also the provider for Charles Owens, whose dipping shot levelled the scores. The game was now end-to-end as Villa brought on some strong substitutes, but Ben Wildgoose and Regan Major were able to deal with the threat in the centre of the defence. Josh Challinor was also effective shielding the back four with some crunching tackles. Aztecs kept on attacking, with Bart Banks combining well with Griffiths, Dutton and MacDonald-Lowe down the left. Littleover then took the lead with a sweeping move down the left, but were unfortunate when Wildgoose’s clearing header struck a Villa player on the shoulder and bounced into the corner of the net. Despite this, Aztecs poured forward, with Scott, Owens and Griffiths all getting further shots away. A free-kick gave an opportunity for an equaliser but this was wasted and from the resulting clearance, Villa should have scored again only for great covering by Keeling and Major. Sherry was alert to Littleover’s strike force and pulled off a brave sliding save on the edge of his penalty area. He also got a hand to a curling shot but could not keep it out as Aztecs conceded their fourth goal, which was harsh. There was total commitment by everybody, including some who were not fully fit and this contributed to a tremendous team performance.

TEAM: Sherry, Keeling, Dean, Lee, Wildgoose, Major, Banks, B.Owens, Dutton, MacDonald-Lowe, Scott, Griffiths, Challinor, C.Owens, Birks

Heanor Junior’s                                                       2

Ashbourne Aztecs under 12’s                            5

The under 12’s played their first match of the year on Saturday, away at Smalley Recreation Ground, against Heanor Juniors.  After an initial frost, the sun came up nicely and provided excellent playing conditions for both teams. The first 15 minutes consisted of end to end play with neither team taking the commanding role, both teams seemed evenly matched.  Jack Dean, Will Campbell and Will Smith were clearing Heanor’s attempts at goal, and on the odd occasion that Heanor broke through the defensive wall, Jordan Burton pulled off an outstanding dive to clear the ball out for a corner.  The corner was stopped in its tracks by Ashbourne’s Oliver Reed and struck instantly back down the pitch to Ben Warner.  He received the ball nicely and fed it along the wing to the strikers, but Tom Hodkinson’s, Sam Legrice’s and Will Farr’s shots at the target were all being saved or cleared by Heanor’s keeper also.  It was a case of third time lucky for Harry Zona, as he followed up to score from the rebounding shots of Tom Hodkinson and Will Farr, 0-1 to Aztecs.  Jack Bowers had a shot saved, but then Tom Hodkinson nicely chipped the keeper to make it 0-2 to Aztecs.  Will Farr was next to make an attempt at goal, his shot going just over the crossbar.  Oliver Reed and Richard Rosewarne were combining well along the left of the pitch, but again it was Harry Zona who came from nowhere to score the third goal of the game. Another potential goal for Aztecs was cleared off the line by Heanor.  At half time the score was a comfortable 0-3 to Ashbourne.  Half time talk consisted of a ‘pat on the back’ and keep up the good work, Harry Zona discussed his desire to complete his ‘hat trick’ and within two minutes of kicking off for the second half, this was exactly what he did.  A couple of changes were made to rest tired legs, Bradley Clowes came on to replace Will Campbell at the back, and Daniel Morton to replace Harry Zona.  Sam Legrice went on one of his mazy dribbles taking on players with ease and when the ball landed at Jack Bower’s feet after Tom Hodkinson’s saved shot, he scored but then the ref disallowed it due to offside.  This gave Jack Bowers an extra incentive to win the ball back and he went on a rampage down the length of the pitch, but it was Heanor who were next to score by chipping Aztecs’ goalie.  Tom Hodkinson for Ashbourne completed another great goal bringing the score to 5-1, but again Heanor pulled one back to make it 5-2. The game was surely not over as far as the home team was concerned, and Jordan Burton for Aztecs had to pull off a number of outstanding saves in the latter part of the game, to keep the goal difference of 3 intact.

REDWOOD ROCKETS U14   1 – 2  ASHBOURNE AZTECS U14

Aztecs played against a severe wind and struggled to get out of their own half for the first 10 minutes, the back four of Sadler, Evans, Donnely and Partridge stood strong and withstood the pressure from Redwood Dawson in goal pulling off a couple of saves. Aztecs then  started to put some good passing moves together and pushed forward having a couple of shots go wide and the keeper making a number of saves. With Aztecs pushing forward Redwood broke quickly, the ball could have been cleared out but the defender tried to turn and lost possession leaving the striker to run through and smack the ball into the net. It was disappointing as Aztecs were having a good spell of possession and putting Redwood under pressure. Play remained fairly even up to the break so it was 1-0 at half time.

Now with the wind behind them Aztecs camped in Redwood’s half of the pitch creating chance after chance, Redwood defended doggedly but a back heel from Russell across the area allowed AIDEN PRICKETT to smack the ball into the roof of the net to level the score. Again and again Aztecs went close but the winner would not come, with Aztecs pushing forward Redwood counter attacked Dawson was called on to make a number of saves a free kick just going over the bar. With time almost up and just a few seconds to go ARRON RUSSELL fired in a high lofted shot from 25 yards over the defence and the keeper the ball dropping into the top left corner of the net to win the game. It must have been heartbreaking for Redwood but on the balance of play Aztecs had been the stronger team. Man of the match was awarded to Nick Partridge for a solid performance in defence.

TEAM: Kieran Dawson, Oliver Sadler, Eddy Donnelly, Jack Evans, Nick Partridge, Thomas Mc Hugh, Max Wainwright, Mike Leason, Benjo Laurie, Ben Sanders, Arron Russell, Aiden Prickett and Jack Coats.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             1              Littleover Dazzlers          3

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards took on Littleover Dazzlers looking to put a run of narrow defeats behind them and get the ideal preparation for next weeks cup quarter final.

In near gale force conditions the Leopards played the first half into the wind and started the game brightly with Ben Pattinson and Will Birkett once again solid in defence with Aaron Kingaby in goal mainly having to deal with long range shots which he did so with excellent handling in the conditions.

Leo Cooper played the holding midfield role and was fierce in the tackle as Aztecs withstood the early pressure. The front three of Owen Bailey, Sam Glossop and Calum Wood caused problems for the Littleover defence as they tried to hit them on the break and as they fought their way into the game Calum Wood picked up the ball on the halfway line, skipped past the defender and as he sped into the box he slid the ball past the onrushing keeper to give the Leopards the lead.

Wood also had a second break shortly after but with defenders breathing down his neck he pulled his shot wide. Good work from the front three also ended with a shot from Wood from the right edge of the box which the keeper did well to hold as Leopards tried to push home their advantage.

As the half went on though, Littleover got back into the game. Tommy Cockayne came on into the defence and made some excellent interceptions as their forwards tried to break away. Just before half time, however, a scramble in the Aztecs box led to the ball being poked home for the equaliser. Half time 1-1.

The second half saw Jack Beresford and Jacob Wibberley-Howe introduced to try and get the Leopards back on top but the wind seemed to die down and Aztecs couldn’t gain the advantage from it. As a result the match was much more even with both sides going close early on.

With 10 minutes to go a Littleover break saw them gain a free-kick on the edge of the box. From the resulting scramble the ball was forced home and the Leopards were behind.

To their credit once again the lads continued to battle and almost got the equaliser they deserved when Jack Beresford pounced on a loose ball but his shot thudded the post and went straight into the grateful keepers arms.

As they continued to push for the equaliser they were left exposed at the back and with a minute to go a Littleover break saw Aaron Kingaby make yet another excellent save but the ball hit an onrushing forward and somehow found its way into the net.

This match almost summed up the Leopards season so far. Lots of hard work and good football from all of the squad but they couldn’t quite kill the game off and lost out at the end when the luck once again deserted them.  The boys can now look forward to the big cup game next week when hopefully their luck will change and they will get the result that their performances deserve.

Man of the Match was Aaron Kingaby for yet another solid performance and for his handling and shot stopping in such blustery conditions.

Normanton All Stars U11  4
Ashbourne Aztecs U11    1

This game was a step into the unknown for Aztecs, as this is the first time they had reached the last eight of the cup.  The conditions were not the best for either team with a strong wind blowing across the ground. The first half began with both teams finding it hard to play football.  The teams battled hard for the ball but neither side could settle on the ball.  Fifteen minutes had gone and both sides had not really troubled the keepers.  An attack by Normanton came to nothing and Matt Bacon in the Aztecs goal had the ball in his hands, he launched a kick down field which bounced over the helpless Normanton keeper into the net,1-0. Both teams were battling hard, a Normanton attack was not cleared and the ball was poked home to level the score just before half time.  Changes were made at half time but with wind behind, the Normanton side put the Aztecs defense under pressure and they scored two quick goals.  With the score at 3-1 Aztecs began to get at Normanton with Tom Wheeldon, Keane Bond and Sam Remer all coming close.  All the defenders for
Aztecs did well in tough conditions but with the wind behind them Normanton got a final goal against the run of play.  The final whistle went and the cup run was over, with Aztecs doing themselves proud.

Man of the Match - Matt Bacon -  a rare goal for a keeper.

Team:  M Bacon, J Kelly, S Elliott, M Hooley, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, O Thompson, T Wheeldon, K Bond, S Remer, A Moss and J Ainsworth.

ASHBOURNE AZTEC LIONS – 1

ALLESTREE JUNIORS           –3

A GAME OF TWO HALVES

The Lions started brightly against Allestree with some good moves but fell to a sucker punch counter attack with Alex Cranstone standing no chance and were 1-0 down after 10 mins. They regrouped and started to play well with some long range shots from Jake Massey and solid tackles from Dan Harrison who got the ball into the box for Marcus Lumbard to be fouled and we were given a penalty. Oscar Wainwright stepped up and scored but for reasons only known to their linesman it had to be retaken and was missed. This made the Lions heads drop and before they knew it they were 3-0 down.

The Lions came out for the 2nd half very determined to right the wrongs of the 1st half with Dominic Simpson-Allsop providing some great balls to Peter Linley who crossed into the area for Jake Sims to score but again their linesman disallowed it. Again the Lions regrouped and following some neat play from Tom Dixon and Ben Bryan the ball was fed to Callum Hellaby who went on a solo run and scored from 18 yards. The Lions were really pressurising the opposition's defence now with great play from the captain which resulted in another penalty but it was sadly missed. The team battled hard and ended up losing 3-1 which did not reflect their performance.

Man of the Match Daniel Harrison ( solid and every where )

The players, staff and parents of the Lions would like to offer there sincere condolences to Marcus, Roy, Becky and Helene following their recent sad loss.

Aztecs overcome high wind with high Fives

Aztec U18’s 5 Snarestone U 18’s 2

In very blustery conditions Aztecs knocked the wind out of a steely Snarestone outfit to remain in top position. However it was a hard fought encounter with both sides going close in the early stages. Aztecs can thank Billy Akers for a superb save 10 minutes into the game and at the other end, Richard Archer, Charles Mann and Liam Walton-Gibson went close to scoring.

As the game progressed Aztecs began to take control with Alex Drummond and Tom Cresswell battling tenaciously in midfield and when the ball landed at the feet of Mann he hit a fine drive to make it 1-0. As ever, an important time to score again was just before halftime, and Dave Ebbrell obliged with a well-taken shot inside the post for 2-0.

Snarestone kept pressing and tested Akers on occasions but the quartet of Adam Lomas, Liam Walton- Gibson, Ross Hunter and Callum Redfern defended resolutely throughout, with Lomas delivering a number of teasing free kicks.

After a flurry of activity in the visitor’s penalty box, Mann popped up to head in the third and relieve the pressure. Soon after Sam Froggatt showed the defence a clean pair of heels and finished emphatically for 4-0.

Aztecs looked to be cruising but a fierce drive from 25 yards snatched a goal back for Snarestone.

Harry Wibberley and Scott Sears caused problems on the right with both players troubling the visiting keeper who gave a sound performance.

However it was Will Tomkinson who added the fifth following a cross from the right and Ollie Sanders, Tomkinson and Mitch Coxon combined on the left ending in Coxon firing just wide. Snarestone refused to give in and hit a second, minutes before the end, with the final score line 5-2. This was an excellent all round performance from Aztecs considering the tough opposition and the difficult weather condition.

PUMAS 5 DERWENT 3
Team sport is often used as a metaphor for life. One of the enduring clichés is that you only get out of life what you put in. After a battling draw with Mackworth it looked like Pumas were on the right path. Disappointingly they came out of the Christmas break lethargic and rusty, leading to a comprehensive defeat to Codnor. However in the intervening fortnight the effort and application shown by the squad in training gave the coaches a degree of confidence that a creditable performance was due. We were not prepared for the transformation we saw today into a team who displayed utmost confidence that this was the day of victory from the kick off. A very entertaining game played in great spirit by both teams.
It is unfair to focus on one individual as this was a spine tingling team effort to secure Pumas’ first win of the season and almost tripling the goals for column in one game. Jack Banks took command of the area and made several good stops plus good distribution. Thomas Barke was a rock at the back working well with Bradley Pegg, a partnership which has been like a brick wall on more than one occasion this season. Rotation at the back bought debutant Mathew Whetton. Mathew played very well and he fitted in perfectly being calm in possession and showing an ability to pass the ball. Defensive midfield was our Captain Regan Ford who must run on Duracel. He leads by example and his sweeping up particularly in the final quarter of the game was impressive. Theo Rodgers did a great job for Pumas today. Initially his role was to support Thomas Harris to take the game to Derwent. In the second half he was asked to work alongside Regan. The game for me is about the team and sometimes it is players following orders that is the difference between winning and losing. Theo did what was asked to the letter. Conor Phillips played attacking midfield and linked well with Thomas Harris and won a lot of ball in the middle. We played Maxwell Bishop as a speedy link player at both ends of the match to do the very important role of stretching the play. Max gets into some great positions and enables us to change shape. Up front we played Thomas Harris who passed the ball well, was a real handful for the Derwent defenders, which enabled play to be stretched.
The blustery conditions provided a tricky test today and both teams kept the ball well which reflected well on the players technique. The pitch was a bit gluey but played remarkably well given the wet weather we have had of late. With the wind in Pumas favour for the first period early pressure led to a quick breakthrough with a neat finish from Thomas Harris. However our Chaddesden based opponents Derwent are a tenacious opponent and they hit back on their first attack to level the scores. Several fine moves from Aztecs were frustrated by good defending before Regan Ford hit a powerful volley from the centre circle which clipped the underside of the bar and into the net. Regan had been threatening a Beckhamesque goal this year and now he had succeeded. There will be few goals this season of such quality. In a different vein the third goal was equally satisfying. Debutante Mathew Whetton won the ball in midfield, steered it cleverly to Conor Phillips. Conor clipped the ball into Thomas Harris’ path and Thomas finished with a striker’s confidence. The scoring for the first half was completed by a set play. We had been working on this in training. Conor Phillips peeled back to the edge of the box eluding his marker, Regan’s corner found Conor who struck it well and with enough force that the despairing keeper could not prevent a 4-1 scoreline.
The second half was to provide a different challenge for Pumas as they were now playing into the increased strength wind. For this we employed two defensive midfielders with Theo Rodgers asked to shore up the line in front of the defence with Regan. This he did with great diligence. But this wasn’t a negative second half formation as Conor and Thomas Harris would need to use their respective guile and pace to keep the game stretched. In fact for the opening ten minutes Pumas fashioned most of the chances and added to the score with the completion of Thomas’ hat-trick. It was another clinical finish and Thomas might have scored even more including one run which ended up with the upright almost cracked.
The final ten minutes were exciting as Derwent battled back with two goals, the second of which was a particularly tidy finish. We changed to a 2-2-2 for this period as we needed a more direct style. This needed great marshalling at the back from Thomas Barke and Regan, cutting out danger in the middle from Theo and unselfish running to keep the game stretched from Max and Thomas Harris. During this late period there were good chances at both ends including one remarkable save from Jack Banks foiling a Derwent shot from point blank.
In the end a 5-3 win for Pumas against spirited and well organised opposition reflects well on the lads. They showed discipline, will to win attitude and great communication. Parents and coaches were proud of this display. Bring on Etwall.

Ashbourne Aztecs under 9’s Junior’s 10

Stanton Ilkeston Colts under 9’s           0

Gale force winds were experienced by the under 9’s Junior’s at the Racecourse in Derby on Sunday.  The development section matches had already been called off at Mackworth, but with a few extra securing pins applied to the goal posts and nets, the games at the Racecourse were allowed to go ahead.  The Ashbourne team tactically chose to play with the wind against them, the Manager and coaches suspecting that the players may tire in the second half.  The first goal for Aztecs came from a well taken corner by Charlie Land and neatly finished over the line by Tyler Burton at full stretch.  Luke Zona and James Donlan both had chances of a goal in quick succession, but these attempts either went wide or were saved by Stanton’s goalie.  A good pass from Tyler Burton to James Donlan resulted in James achieving his first goal of the game.  Luke Zona picked up a ball in midfield, passed to Tyler Burton who charged down the remainder of the pitch and without panicking slotted the ball neatly into the bottom left corner, 3-0 to Aztecs.  Stanton then seemed to pick up the pace, they were determined that the Ashbourne team was going to have a bit of pressure on the return.  The first player who broke through for Stanton was stopped bluntly in his tracks by Ashbourne’s George Martin in defence.  Adam Leigh was also making it hard for Stanton’s strikers to break through. Nathan Munro was subbed on for added strength in defence, as Stanton continued to attack, but their shots were carried wide of the goal by the wind and didn’t put too much pressure on Ashbourne’s goalie Ben Johnson.  Luke Zona was next to get his name on the score sheet, followed by James Donlan adding his second to make the half time score 5-0 to the home team.  A couple of changes were made for the second half, Harry Vinall coming on upfront and Josh Lee, having recovered from injury, adding to the defensive wall.  Second half Luke Zona came out ‘on fire’, netting three more goals to make his personal tally 4.  Tyler Burton added another goal to complete his ‘hat trick’.  Harry Vinall had a shot saved by Stanton’s goalie, but it was Charlie Land’s goal which received the title ‘goal of the game’.  It came from a corner and curled, with the added bonus of the wind, neatly into the back of the net.  No other players were needed to finish this ball off, an excellent piece of work taking advantage of the second half ‘with the wind’ conditions.  In the closing stages Nathan Munro changed positions with goalie Ben Johnson to give him a bit of a ‘run out’, Ben almost immediately scored for his team, just robbed by the goalie at the last minute.  Man of the match went to Nathan Munro for his flexibility on the field.

Too windy for Jaguars!

ASHBOURNE AZTECS JAGUARS U10.....1

CASTLE DONINGTON...............................6

The windy conditions had a big part to play in this week’s match.

Jaguars started well with the wind in their favour applying most of the pressure. They could have gone into the lead when Tom Wright had a solo run and shot only for the keeper to pull out a great save.

A couple more chances came Jaguars way with runs from Jamie Edwards and Tom Green, but then against the run of play Donington scored. Jake Stafford in the Jaguars net came under some more pressure but dealt with it well. Jaguars pushed up and from a good throw in the ball came loose for Tyler Thraves to smash it home giving the keeper no chance. Jaguars saw out the 1st half still trying to take advantage of the wind but without any luck.

The 2nd half was a different story with Donington taking full advantage of the wind. The pace of the long range shots with the wind behind them proved too much for Stafford, who tried his best to stop them, but all to no avail. Jaguars still had some good movement and good runs by Charlie Scattergood and Kai Kirkpatrick which saw Donington pegged back. Most of this half was played in the Jaguars half with both Callum Riley and Jo Brooks having to defend. The pressure in the 2nd half proved too much for the Jaguars and this showed in the final score.

Man of the Match went to Tyler Thraves

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s     0

Ilkeston Juniors Under 13s          9

2012 started  poorly for the Ashbourne Under 13s with a bad defeat against league holders Ilkeston Juniors. They were up against it from the beginning, with only eleven players available. They also struggled to adapt to the playing conditions, especially the strong swirling wind blowing across the pitch. Despite a few confident early touches by Sam Birks, Matt Griffiths and Liam Scott, Ilkeston controlled the first half.  So it was no surprise that the visitors scored first after an unfortunate slide tackle by Regan Major fell at the feet of an opposition forward, who chipped over goalkeeper Conor Sherry. They were also dangerous with crosses into the penalty area which Aztecs did not deal with, and they added three further goals on the quarter hour after the home defence did not attack the ball properly. Josh Dutton and Josh Challinor were toiling in midfield but their passes could not penetrate the solid Ilkeston defence.  Sherry was kicking well into the wind and was assertive in his calling, dealing well with a number of through passes by the opposition. Major was also growing in stature as the half progressed, with some towering headers and strong clearances. But the usual attacking flair on the flanks was missing and Aztecs only created two scoring opportunities before the interval. One was a sweeping move involving Birks, Dutton and Scott but the final shot by Challinor went past the post. Dutton then struck a swerving shot from outside the penalty area, but the wind took it wide.  But it was the away side which finished the half stronger, with two long shots which gave Sherry no chance. The second period saw a much better effort from Aztecs, as the whole defence was more alert in dealing with Ilkeston’s tricky strike force. Ben Wildgoose, Dan Lee and the outstanding Josh Bailey tackled more firmly and midfielders Bart Banks, Challinor and Scott put in a good shift as they helped out their defenders. Major had another commanding performance at centre-half. Ashbourne were beginning  to get a grip of the match in midfield with Dutton and Birks finding more space and time. Banks was getting more of the ball on the right and Scott was cutting inside more, but they could not create any goalscoring opportunities. As the pitch cut up and Aztecs’ legs tired, the visitors responded with two goals in five minutes, both created by skilful dribbling out of defence and clinical finishing in the penalty area. This was followed by Aztecs’ best chance, which fell to Scott after a probing run by Birks, but the goalkeeper parried his shot and the rebound by Banks. Sherry then made two smart saves before Ilkeston’s centre-forward held off Lee’s challenge and fired home to make it 9-0. This was a brave effort with Aztecs showing good fighting spirit in the second half, but the home side were well beaten on the day.

TEAM: Sherry, Bailey, Wildgoose, Major, Lee, Challinor (captain), Birks, Dutton, Banks, Scott, Griffiths

Ashbourne Aztecs U12 Lions     2

Rocester  FC                                7

The first match of the New Year against top of the table Rocester was always
going to be difficult for the Lions.  The match began with some good defending from Dixon,
Bryan, Simpson-Allsop and Wainwright but after ten minutes Rocester took the lead when the
Lions defence failed to clear the ball from the goalmouth.  However some good passing from the midfield of Linley, Gregory and Hellaby set Lumbard free.  He passed the ball to Barbour who put in a
brilliant cross for Sims to equalise.  Two quick goals from Rocester made it 1-3 at half time.
The introduction of Harrison, Massey and Keeling in the second half helped a tiring midfield and some excellent defending from Wainwright, together with a brilliant save from Cranstone helped keep the score down until Rocester scored from a corner and then added two more.
In the last few minutes Sims was tripped in the box and the Lions were awarded a
penalty.  Wainwright stepped up and scored but the referee made him retake it after an infringement from a Rocester player. Wainwright held his nerve and slotted the ball firmly into the top corner. There was still time for Rocester to add another goal for a final score of 2-7.
Man of the match was Oscar Wainwright for a brilliant defensive performance and an excellent penalty.
Team: AlexCranstone, Ben Bryan, Oscar Wainwright, Dominic Simpson-Allsop,

Allestree Juniors Deportivo   5

Aztecs Leopards U9's             2

This match against Allestree juniors was the first game of the new year . U9 Leopards started the game well and looked like they have never been on a break over christmas. The Leopards were confident in possession and tackling well . As ever Ben Pattinson and Tommy Cokayne were resolute in defence stopping a very good Allestree side from getting any shots on target .
It was through excellent work in the midfield area by the trio of Alex Cheetham , Leo Cooper and Calum Wood that led the leopards to scoring first. Calum Wood put in a dangerous cross from the right that the Allestree's goalkeeper could only palm into path of Alex Cheetham who calmly put the ball into the goal . 1-0 .
The U9s continued to battle hard for possesion and Taylor Platt was causing the Allestree defence problems by holding the ball up and finding his supporting players . But it was not long before Allestree got an equaliser with a shot that Aaron Kingaby may have saved but it took a wicked deflection into the other side of the goal . 1-1. This gave Allestree extra confidence and soon they made it 2-1 just before half time . U9s regrouped at the interval and with fresh players getting into the game , they started the 2nd half well . Now Sam Glossop was up front and was making it hard for the Allestree defence . Jacob Wibberley-Howe was also tackling well in midfield and stopping Allestree atttacking .
The U9s were working hard for an equaliser and it wasn't long before it came . Aztecs were attacking at will and a good ball was put into the opposition's penalty area and unluckily it was handled by a defender , penalty to the leopards . Calum Wood took the spot kick and hit it hard down the centre , the goalkeeper could only palm it into the roof of the net . 2-2
Aztecs were now searching for a third goal and possibly the winner . They continued to push for another goal and Allestree were under pressure but  still looked very dangerous on the break .With the leopards going all out for a third goal they neglected their defensive duties and Allestree struck twice on the counter attack to make it 4-2 . U9s were still battling hard and looking for more goals themselves . Unfortunately Allestree scored a 5th goal on the counter attack again , to make the final score 5-2 .
Although the match ended in defeat , this was another fantastic performance from the Leopards . As a team they continue to play with great spirit and great belief . They are a match for any team in the division and continue to impress their coaches with their great work rate and awareness .  WELL DONE TO ALL THE PLAYERS .

Aztecs beat Local Rivals!

Ashbourne Aztecs U16 – 4

Doveridge Blue U16 - 0

There is talk for weeks before and after when these evenly matched teams meet, as most of them go to QEGS and are friends.

The match started evenly with Josh Dales and Liam Watson controlling the midfield. This let wingers James Ingram and Dan Lear to utilise the full width of the pitch, allowing them to feed crosses into the box for strikers Josh Timms and Jake Smith, pressuring the Doveridge goalkeeper and defence.

However, with a move down the right wing from Harry Hellaby to Dan Lear, leading straight into the box, a poor clearance was made by Doveridge giving Lear an opening with a drive into the bottom corner of the net.

With Aztec’s gaining confidence, Ingram and Lear gave Ashbourne a few corners, which the next two Ashbourne Aztecs goals came from. With both corners taken by Timms, first Watson gave a low header into the net, with the second corner goal, which was a deflection of Watson, giving him his second goal, also the third goal of the match.

The score didn’t really justify the game, as Doveridge were playing the long ball to Brightmore; however centre halves Ryan Cundy and Sean Bean cut out every opportunity Doveridge had.

The highlight of the first half was a long attack from the left back Jordan Gibson, who decided to show his dribbling skills and go for goal, but only having it disallowed by an unlucky offside.

Again, Jordan Gibson decided to show off his dribbling skills yet again, but decided to pass the ball to Ingram, when two defenders came to him. However, this led to Timms adding another goal for Aztecs.

New signing Lewis Bailey came on for the second half, showing an outstanding performance alongside Joshua Dales for the remainder of the match.

Team - Charlie Mansfield, Harry Hellaby, Shaun Bean, Ryan Cundy, Jordan Walton-Gibson, Dan Lear, Josh Dales, Liam Watson, James Ingram, Jake Smith, Lewis Bailey and Joshua Timms.

LITTLEOVER VILLA U11          0
ASHBOURNE AZTECS U11       2

Ashbourne began the first game of the new year well, putting the opposition under pressure from the start.  The midfield of Sam Remer, Adam and Michael Gerrard controlled the play.  This in turn led to chances being created for the lively front two of Keane Bond and Harry Collins.  With ten minutes gone Keane Bond punished a hesitant Littleover defense and slotted the ball neatly past the on rushing keeper 1-0. Aztecs were well on top but just could not extend their lead. The impressive Oliver Thompson bringing the best out of their keeper with a low drive that looked to be heading for the bottom corner of the net.  Aztecs created several good chances that on any other day would have found the back of the net.  The second half began more evenly but the back three of Stephen Elliott, Jake  Kelly and Jason Ainsworth dealt with their attacks very well.  With two thirds of the half gone Aztecs played their best move of the game which Adam Gerrard finished well past the stranded keeper 2-0.  Tom Wheeldon did well when coming on up front and Matt Bacon in goal kept a well earned clean sheet for the team.  Micheal Gerrard was named Man of the Match for good play from midfield and excellent dead ball skills.  A well earned victory by the lads.

Team: M Bacon, S Elliott, J Kelly, J Ainsworth, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, S Remer, K Bond, H Collins, O Thompson and T Wheeldon.

Aztecs start New Year with a Bang

Marlborough U 18’s 1 Aztec U18’s 6

Aztecs began the New Year where the last one ended, with an emphatic win.

Richard Archer and Will Tomkinson were the providers in the first half lashing in some excellent crosses and it was Charles Mann who despatched three consecutive goals, for a first half hatrick.

Alex Drummond, Dave Sadler and Ross Hunter kept the wingers in action with some highly effective passing.

Liam –Walton-Gibson, Adam Lomas were commanding at centre backs and Callum Redfern overlapped several times to cause havoc in the home defence.

Although he was a relative spectator Billy Akers in goal gave an assured performance when called into action.

Minutes before half time Mitch Coxon flighted a 20-yard free kick into the roof of the net and the half ended 0-4.

However, the second half was a more tepid affair with the players recovering from Xmas festivities and in Ross Hunters case Kangaroo steaks in Oz.

Harry Wibberley caused problems on the right almost grabbing two goals and the usually dependable Sam Froggatt went close on occasions. James Spivey and Tom Cresswell added some spark and it was a 25 yard drive from Cresswell which made it 0-5.

Ollie Sanders and Richard Archer pressurised the home defence and the ball broke to Archer who fired in the sixth.

Marlborough never gave up and caused problems for Aztecs in the last 10 minutes grabbing a consolation goal to end the game 1-6.

Aztecs remain top but Winshill are close on their heels in second place.

Belper too good for Jaguars.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS JAGUARS U10........0

BELPER SPORTS......................................6

This was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Jaguars against top of the table Belper sports.

Jaguars were under pressure from the start but good defending by both Jake Wheeldon and Jo Brooks, who gave their all, kept Belper out.

Belper took the lead and ended the 1st half 3-0 up. The only attacks Jaguars had saw Belper’s keeper gather both Tom Wrights shot and Kai Kirkpatrick’s clever through ball.

The second half had Belper applying all the pressure again but good battling and defending from Charlie Scattergood, Callum Riley, Liam Wibberley and Tom Green didn't give them many chances.

Belper Scored 3 more to make the final score 6-0 in their favour.

Throughout the game the excellent and sometimes brave work of Jake Stafford in the Jaguars goal kept the Belper forwards goal bound efforts to a minimum.

Man of the match went to Jo Brooks.

Ashbourne Aztecs Juniors u9’s   7

Field Lane Yellow Sox                  0

Charlie Land and Tyler Burton were quick off the starting blocks for Aztecs but their attempts were denied by Field Lane’s keeper.  Adam Leigh and George Martin were stopping everything getting through to Aztecs goalie, Ben Johnson, clearing balls swiftly from midfield and defense.   Some good passing followed from James Donlan, Charlie Land, Adam Leigh and Tyler Burton but it was nearly 10 minutes into the first half before Tyler scored the first goal of Aztecs’ 7.  The second was a result of James  being brought down in the box and a penalty being given by the referee, a bit of a debate followed amongst the under 9’s over who should take the shot, and it was Charlie Land who stepped up to the mark.  He scored an excellent penalty with power into the back of the net; the goalie had no chance of saving it.  The third goal came from Field Lane’s goalie being unable to hold onto a stray ball where Tyler was waiting to push it over the line.  Luke Zona had an attempt from distance just tip over the cross bar, but after lining up a shot for either James Donlan or Tyler Burton, it was Tyler who achieved his ‘hat trick’. Luke was next to get his name on the scoresheet with an excellent goal taken from distance, bang on target.  Ben Johnson, Aztecs goalie, was next to see a bit of the action from Field Lane, but their shot went wide of the post.  When Aztecs received a ‘free kick’ from the ref, Charlie Land again took the shot beautifully, curling the ball into the back of the net with precision.  Toby Ainsworth was doing a beautiful job in defence, holding strong at the side of George Martin, and the Joe duo of Miller and Mee were now getting more chance on the ball.  Adam Leigh re-entered the pitch after a short break and immediately scored the seventh for his team.  Tyler Burton was subbed on again after recovering from injury and almost got a header from an excellent corner taken by Adam Leigh.  The final whistle blew, another great result for the under 9’s keeping them ‘top’ of division 1.

In the group stages of the Xmas tournament at DW Sports Powerdome, Ashbourne won 4 games and drew 2, with goals coming from Elliot Murray, Joe Reed, Lee Cranstone and Matthew Pepper. Finishing second in the group stages meant Aztecs played 3rd place Derwent, and first place Mickleover played 4th Pride Park juniors.  Ashbourne won comfortably in the semi final 3-0 with a hatrick from
Elliot Murray and some excellent defending from Jack Bill and William Topham.  Mickleover won their semi on penalties and Aztecs went into the final bright, as Ashbourne had already beaten Mickleover  1-0 in the group stages. Despite this, Ashbourne were faced with some injury problems when Matthew Pepper and Will Topham both had to come off.  Ashbourne had no subs left and Mickleover took the advantage.  Mickleover’s goalkeeper denied Ashbourne some great shots and unfortunately the game ended Ashbourne 0 - 2 Mickleover sports.

A Festive Feast of Football

Aztec U18’s 3 Aztecs U 20’s 6

Old v new served up a feisty friendly to start 2012 when the original Aztecs under 18’s re formed to play the current team.

With 29 local players on show including a number of family rivalries/connections both teams shead their Xmas pud and put on a delightful game in glorious sunshine. The Cloakes -Chris and Todd gave a solid display for the U 20’s,with Father Ged, the man in black and brother Ben running the line.

Andy and Kyran Bell had a ding-dong battle in the centre and Liam and Conor Walton-Gibson shared honours even as opposite centre backs.

With Ollie and Tom Sanders playing for each team, it was senior Tom who took centre stage with a brace of goals.

For the U 18’s Callum Redfern, Mitch Coxon, Tom Cresswell and Harry Wibberley competed strongly against Callum Broom, Rich Coates, Matt Lanning and Jack Murphy, but it was the Murph who hit the third. However it was Richard Archer who had opened the scoring for the U 18’s with a left foot drive and Sam Froggatt added a second to end the first half 2-3.

Charles Mann and Dave Ebbrell were always dangerous but Tom ‘the giant ‘ Gadsby made some outstanding saves to keep the oldies in front.

However, Billy ‘acrobatic’ Akers performed similar feats for the younger team and the fans were treated to feast of attacking football.

After a series of dives which received 9's from the judges, Callum Broom added a fourth and Richard Coates slotted in the fifth. James Spivey and Adam Lomas made a number of probing runs but were thwarted by some fine defending from Henry Cust, Carl ‘cheesy grin’ Cheshire and Sam Walker-Sharpe who turned back the clock (only a few years).

With Stuart Lomas running the line and Adam Lomas swapping places with Akers in goal,   the U’18’s pulled one back when Dave Sadler set up Froggatt who lobbed reserve keeper Bell for 3-5.

But when it looked like the younger team were about to get back into the game up popped Benny Slater who side footed the sixth.

Both teams sent off the subs but the golden oldies managed to clinch the New Year trophy, without resorting to oxygen.

However there’s always another year.

Best wishes to all the players and fans for a healthy and successful 2012.

Ashbourne Aztecs u 12’s        7

Gad Khalsa u12’s                     1

The under 12’s experienced bitterly cold conditions at their home pitch on Saturday, and the state of the pitch was saturated from the previous week’s rainfall.  This did not, however, deter the Aztecs team from playing their usual brilliant football. Tom Hodkinson was first to put his name on the score sheet when he chipped the keeper. Jack Bowers followed up to make sure it went in the net, but Tom’s shot was a dead cert without any extra help.  Will Farr was on the attack next, but the Gad Khalsa goalie just got to it first.  Jack Bowers then fed a ball through to Tom Hokinson but again the goalie denied him his second chance at goal. Tom’s next shot went just wide of the post but the opportunities were coming thick and fast and it wouldn’t be long before Ashbourne would increase their lead.  Kaylem Ocran was carrying an injury to his finger which was affecting his play, and therefore had to be substituted fairly early on in the first half; ordinarily he would have been putting goals at the back of the net too. Will Campbell in defence was marking a player twice his size, but this didn’t stop him getting to those stray balls first and clearing them out of the danger area.  Sam Legrice, Richard Rosewarne, Jack Bowers and Oliver Reed were all working well together, passing the ball back and forth from midfield to the wings; they were running circles around the opposition.  Gad Khalsa’s first real attempt at goal came ten minutes into the first half, but keeper Jordan Burton was there to grasp the shot.  Will Farr was back on the attack and this time he completed for Aztecs’ 2nd goal of the match.  Kacper Stoch was brought on and was immediately on fire, chasing every ball around the pitch, he too managed to score for his team giving Aztecs a comfortable 3 -0 lead.  This seemed to shake Gad Khalsa into action and they immediately pulled a goal back.  Half time came and the result stood at 3-1 to the home side.  Hot chocolate was brought out for the players and all gloves from the parents were given up for the lads in an attempt to stop the shivering. Surprisingly Aztecs came out second half with even more energy, Will Farr scored a further two for Ashbourne giving him his ‘hat trick’, and likewise Tom Hodkinson did the same.  Gad Khalsa also had chances but the defence of Jack Dean, Bradley Clowes,Will Smith and Archie Shaw were not letting them through, and on the odd occasion that they did shoot on goal, whether it was high or low, keeper Burton was alert. The game was almost abandoned 5 minutes from the end as the visibility was impaired by the snow, but the two teams battled on and showed real determination to get to the end.

Fantastic 1st win for u10 Jaguars

ASHBOURNE AZTEC JAGUARS U10.....2
MICKLEOVER JUBILEE.........................0

Aztec Jaguars have waited a long time for their 1st win but against Mickleover Jubilee they knew this was their chance after narrowly losing 2-1 last time.
It all started well for the Jaguars with them applying most of the pressure.Good work in the midfield lead to the 1st goal with the ball being cleared up to Thomas Wright.Thomas pushed forward and from long range fired the ball towards goal, the bounce and power took the keeper by surprise who could only parry the ball into the net.
This seemed to spur the Jaguars on with everyone battling for the ball and soaking up any pressure.
After halftime Mickleover started to apply more pressure but great work from Jake Wheeldon and Jake Stafford in defence kept them out. There was also a fine display of goal keeping from Charlie Scattergood.
Jaguars managed to ride this storm and fine work in midfield from Josh Taylor-Grout and Tyler Thraves kept them in touch.
The second goal came with a fantastic solo run from defence by Jake Wheeldon right up into Mickleovers area.
Here being closed down by a defender he crossed the ball to Thomas Wright who without any effort swept the ball in via the post leaving the keeper no chance to save.
This was just the tonic the Jaguars needed and they saw out the game applying most of the pressure.
Kai Kirkpatrick,Jo Brooks,Callum Riley Liam Wibberley and Tom Green, all played their part giving 100%.
It was an exceptional performance from all the team.
Man of the match went to Jake Wheeldon.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U14   4 – 2   BELPER TOWN U14

This was a game between two evenly matched teams so both sides fancied themselves for the three points. Play started even with both teams playing some good football and testing the keepers. Belper opened the scoring with a good shot just inside the post, three minutes later a perfectly weighted through ball from Sanders saw AIDEN PRICKET run through and smack the ball past the keeper to level. Belper upped the pressure and out of a scramble in Aztecs box the ball was cleared out only to a Belper player who smashed it back into the top corner to put the visitors back into the lead. A powerful run by KIERAN DAWSON broke through the defence and fierce shot beat the keeper to level again, Belper broke through and a goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Jack Evans so the teams were even at the break.

Belper had been stronger in the first half but Aztecs came out very strong after the break  the keeper making some good saves, BAILEY MITCHELL smashed the ball against the post the ball ran along the goal line hit the other post and went in to put Aztecs ahead. Belper hit back but Owen Ryan in Aztecs goal saved everything coming at him. With time running out a scramble in Belpers box saw the ball come out for KIERAN DAWSON with a looping header over the keeper into the top corner to finish the scoring for Aztecs and win 4-2 to collect the three points. It was a very entertaining game with both sides playing neat passing football with determination and passion.

Team: Owen Ryan, Oliver Sadler, Jack Evans, Eddy Donnely, Nick Partridge, Thomas Mc Hugh, Jack Coats, Kieran Dawson, Bailey Mitchell, Max Wainwright, Michale Leason, Ben Sanders, Aiden Prickett and Benjo Laurie.

Both teams started the game slowly, with Littleover playing the slightly better football.  This paid off for the opposing team when Aztecs failed to clear an attack; their forward slotted the ball into the net past the on rushing Bacon in goal 0-1.  After the goal Aztecs started to play the football they are capable of and soon Littleover were under a lot of pressure conceding corner after corner.  The equaliser finally came from a well taken corner into the box where Sam Remer pounced to fire the ball home 1-1.  Changes were made throughout the game with all players used doing very well.  Half-time passed with Aztecs putting Littleover under increasing pressure.  This paid off from another fine corner taken by Michael Gerrard which was headed in by the team captain Stephen Elliott 2-1. The score was soon 3-1 after the speed of forward Tom Wheeldon got him away from the Littleover defence and slotted the ball calmly past the keeper.  The final whistle went with a good performance from all the Aztec players.

Ashbourne earned a hard fought 3 points on Sunday with once again the versatility of the squad paying off. Ben Wainwright and Adam Wildgoose shared goalkeeping duties, Jack Bill and Kye Gordon again showed their partnership at the back is blossoming, and the midfield trio of Louis Zambrano, Jake Ridley and Captain Liam Warner worked hard in terrible conditions.  Lee Cranstone picked up where he left off last week with a great centre forward display. The 2 subs Jo Reed and Matt Pepper also had a part to play as the heavy pitch was a factor.  Aztecs opened the scoring with a well worked break with a good pass by Warner setting Cranstone free to easily finish.  Riverside responded well and due to Aztecs not clearing the ball effectively they scored 2 goals to go into the break 2-1 up.  A morale boost followed from the Aztecs Manager at half time which helped Aztecs show their full potential.  Jo Reed equalised from close range and Lee Cranstone calmly added his 2nd to give Aztecs the lead.  They never looked like losing instead they could have added more to the score. This is the sort of performance that they needed to carry them forward. Man of the match Lee Cranstone for 2 goals and terrific attitude.

Aztecs prevail in Burton mud bath

 Belvedere U 17’s 1 Aztec U18’s 8

Considering the mud bath conditions Aztecs played some excellent football and dominated from the start .Sam Froggatt and Richard Archer terrorised the defence with some fine wing play and Dave Ebbrell lashed in a series of drives going close on several occasions. However it was Archer who broke the deadlock with a well-taken first and Ebbrell followed with the second and third goals. Dave Sadler and Alex Drummond won the midfield battle setting up a number of chances.

Charles Mann and Sam Froggatt both narrowly missed the target but Froggatt got his just reward scoring the fourth to make it 0-4 at halftime.

After the break Scott Sears and Tom Cresswell tested the home defence with some probing crosses and passes. Callum Redfern long throw speciality constantly found Mann who headed on a series of chances in front of goal, however pressure told when Will Tomkinson slotted in the fifth. Soon after Ollie Sanders and Tomkinson played a neat one two and Tomkinson broke free to set up Mann whose goal bound shot was well saved.

The central partnership of Adam Lomas and Liam Walton –Gibson were solid, keeping the dependable Billy Akers in goal from getting his shirt dirty.

Up popped Tomkinson for his second and Aztecs sixth and the away side were on a roll. Ross Hunter put in a fine performance with a series of mazy runs and was unlucky not to score, but it was Mann who deservedly struck the seventh from 20 yards.

With minutes remaining Harry Wibberly beat two defenders and hammered in a cracking eighth. However Aztecs were denied a clean sheet and shirts when Belvedere struck a late consolation goal.

Taking into account the determined opposition and muddy conditions this was an impressive performance keeping Aztecs in top spot.

Aztecs under 9's Pumas 0
Mackworth                     0

Celebrated draws of our time have included the wild delight of Scandinavians when Denmark and Sweden drew in Euro 2004 and the ching of cash into the pockets of punters in the know following Padova versus Atlanta earlier this year. You can add to that list Pumas versus Mackworth 2011. But this draw differs from the other two in that the celebration was about two teams of lads battling out a match where commitment, organisation and teamwork belied their tender years. Where will-to-win was as evident as basic skills.

The weather condition was heavy rain. However this quite often leads to the best footballing conditions as the analysis of Thomas Barke concluded at full time that this was why Pumas played so well!. Certainly it produced a thoroughly entertaining and toughly contested match between two well matched teams who have both come on leaps and bounds since the season started. It was fiercely competitive but the spirit shown by both sets of players was fair and at the end it was clear all the lads from both teams had enjoyed themselves.

In goal was Jack Banks who produced one very fine tip over the bar in the first half and looked very assured given that the ball was like a bar of soap today. It has to be said that both keepers were exceptional and they can both be very proud of somehow keeping clean sheets. Jack is dropping on loose balls so well now that for example he managed to claw the ball back from one scramble when more than half of it had crossed the line.

Defensive duties were initially shared between captain Eric Prince and Thomas Barke. The rotation bought Samuel Robinson on to replace as necessary. The lads were very strong in defence with some good challenges but most noticeably excellent communication, positioning and cover. It was great to see that few chances were fashioned by Mackworth from set plays which has been an Achilles Heel this year and an area we have been trying to improve through training. The main threat in the second half from Mackworth came from long range speculative shots. It has to be said though that a couple of these whizzed perilously close.

In midfield we had Regan Ford, Conor Phillips and Bradley Pegg. Nathan Yardley was bought in on rotation as necessary. The lads took up their roles brilliantly. Essentially Regan played in front of the back two, took dead balls and provided support for the other two in the middle. He never stopped running and was very impressive today. Bradley held the centre pitch breaking down attacks and feeding Conor. Conor’s role was to support the other two in the middle and get up into the area particularly supporting Thomas Harris when he was galloping down the wings by getting into the box to offer an option for a cutback. Up front we had Thomas Harris whose job was to link in with Conor, provide the main strike force and work hard to put the Mackworth defense under pressure.

It is hard in a short report to detail the many exciting aspects of this game but here are three of many close calls we gave Mackworth. A corner taken by Regan from the right was disguised by good movement in the box by the Pumas forwards which pulled their defenders off the near post the drilled in corner from Regan was goal bound bar a miraculous save by the keeper. A free kick from fifteen yards out by Eric skimmed off the surface, hit the post rebounded loose and Conor was inches from connecting but the fine keeper just grabbed it in time. A dribble by Conor ended with a pushed pass in to Thomas Harris’ path, he controlled and shot narrowly wide.

The commitment to be first to the ball, to try to think about who to pass to and communicate with each other all the time made this a performance of which the coaches were very proud. All the hard work and the way the lads have learnt lessons well have been transferred into this first point of the season. Epitomising the progress was today’s Man of the Match Nathan Yardley who slotted into both midfield and defensive duties. His efforts in training and in matches has led to his progress leading to today’s award.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             1

Gad Khalsa U9’s                                         3

Driving rain and freezing temperatures greeted the teams as Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards faced a Gad Khalsa side who were sitting at the top of the table before kick off.

The horrible conditions meant that it was always going to be a battle and it was Leopards who started the brighter when a good move involving captain for the day Jack Harding, Owen Bailey, Calum Wood and Taylor Platt led to an early corner.

Calum Wood floated in the corner and a glancing header from Owen Bailey flicked against the post before being cleared. Two more corners followed in quick succession but they came to nothing and Gad Khalsa began to find their way into the game.

Leo Cooper and Will Birkett stayed firm at the back with Aaron Kingaby solid in goal but soon Gad Khalsa had forced a corner of their own. It was very well delivered and although Aztecs tried to get it clear, it was scrambled home at the back post and the Leopards were behind.

The goal seemed to rock the Leopards and more Gad Khalsa pressure led to another corner which was again very well delivered and again was scrambled home at the back post for Gad Khalsa to lead 2-0.

Given the conditions and the strength of the opposition, the Leopards could have let their heads drop at this stage but once again they continued to show their fighting spirit and managed to get a foothold in the game.

Right on half time Calum Wood picked the ball up on the edge of his own box and beat his man to set the Aztecs free. His through ball was collected by Sam Glossop who steadied himself before shooting but his shot was blocked. However, Sam kept his cool when the rebound fell to him and he slipped a lovely pass to Leo Cooper to slot home and halve the deficit. The half time score was 2-1.

The second half began with Aztecs continuing to look strong and pushing for an equaliser. Leo Cooper had pushed into midfield and together with Alex Cheetham had lots of mazy runs at the heart of the Gad Khalsa defence but they could not find the second goal.

Jack Beresford came into Aztecs defence and he did brilliantly to stop any counter-attacks as the Leopards pushed and pushed for the equaliser. When Gad Khalsa did break through Aaron Kingaby was in formidable form and he kept out at least three one-on-ones with excellent handling in such tricky conditions.

However, with 10 minutes to go, as Aztecs once again pressed forward, they were caught on the break again and this time Gad Khalsa did score to make it 3-1.

Aztecs continued to press and Calum Wood and Leo Cooper were both on the end of several fouls around the box as they tried to trick their way through but Aztecs couldn’t find any more and the day ended in defeat.

All the lads played well in tough circumstances and once again showed an excellent spirit amongst them. Man of the match was Leo Cooper for a commanding performance both in defence and when asked to step up into midfield and for his coolly taken goal.

The Lions regain their Pride

Roe Farm                                                  0

Ashbourne Aztecs Lions under 12's 4

The Racecourse at Derby provided the venue for the game against Roe Farm. The cold weather brought about a late pitch inspection by the referee and managers, who all agreed that the pitch was playable. The Lions started very brightly forcing Roe Farm on the back foot from the off. The Lions started numerous attacks from the very organised defence of Wainwright, Simpson-Allsop, Dixon (man of the match last week) and Bryan, who all fed the ball into midfield where the energetic running of Gregory and Barbour were able to support the attack force very well.  One move led Linley to receive the ball; he then provided a great cross to Barbour, whose shot went inches wide at the near post. The midfield was now helping in attack and when needed in defence. This move made the Lions more determined and after a spell of superb passing, the ball landed at Sims' feet, who beat 2 players before laying off a great pass to Lumbard, who scored the first of his three goals. The team then went into constant attack and it was not long before Massey and Hellaby combined to feed the ball through to Lumbard, who scored another superb goal. The Lions went into half time 2-0 up. The second half started the same as the first with the Lions forcing Roe Farm back to their 18 yard area, which led to a solo drive from the halfway line for Lumbard to get his hat trick – but now all the Lions players wanted to score which led to some rushed shots, so after instructions from the manager and coach the team went back to the original game plan and slowed the game down. A couple of injuries disrupted the Lions for a while but they soon got back in their stride with another great pass from Linley to Sims who controlled the ball superbly and scored. The team were all now looking up and providing some exquisite passes to their team mates, who were tearing the opposition’s defence apart, but they could not add to the score line. Cranstone had very little to do, but the defence felt very assured by his confident shouts. Three points from some very good team play.

Man of the match was Lumbard for a great captain’s performance and 3 great goals.

Team: Dixon, Hellaby, Bryan, Gregory, Cranstone, Simpson-Allsop, Sims, Massey, Barbour, Wainwright, Lumbard, Linley

Field Lane Yellow Sox                   0

Ashbourne Aztecs Juniors u9’s     7

It was ‘Lucky seven’ for the under 9s Junior’s as they romped away with a 7-0 victory at the weekend against Field Lane.  The scoreline did not reflect how well Field Lane played in the first half; they sped off with great pace and it with Nathan Munro for Aztecs who stopped their first attempt at Ashbourne’s goal.  A couple more attempts were made by Field Lane in quick succession but it was goalie Ben Johnson who managed to keep them at bay.  It was 10 minutes into the game before Aztecs started playing good football; the first of their goals was set up by Tyler Burton and scored by James Donlan.  The first of two corners followed for Aztecs, both taken by Charlie Land, one was cleared by Field Lane’s defence, and the second Tyler Burton, once received, tapped slightly wide of the post.  A James Donlan throw-into George Martin was passed back and forwards between the pair before George shot at goal, but again the ball went slightly wide of the post. A header from James Donlan was cleared off the line by Field Lane’s defence and now Aztecs were starting to dominate the play.  The Aztecs strikers were passing the ball about between them, picking their shots at goal, first Tyler, then James, then Charlie, all three trying to get the ball into the back of the net, but it was Charlie who completed the second goal for his team.  At the other end, Field Lane had a good break but their lone striker was stopped in his advance by Joe Mee.  Harry Vinall was brought on in midfield and immediately started feeding good balls through to James Donlan and Tyler Burton for more shots at goal.  Half time score was 0-2 to Aztecs.  A few changes were made to positions over the break and Aztecs came out stronger.  Toby Ainsworth added strength and dominance to the play in defence for Ashbourne, and with Harry Vinall together with Joe Mee picking up every ball in the midfield, shots for Aztecs now came thick and fast.  Charlie Land fired home his second goal and his hat trick came from a corner which although it didn’t go directly into the net, it rebounded off a Field Lane defender and Charlie was quick to follow up beautifully curling it into the goal.  It was George Martin who was next to get his name on the score sheet with a power shot into Field Lane’s net and when the home side gave away a penalty in the box from a hand ball, Tyler Burton stepped up to the mark and scored a perfect penalty shot into the top corner.  Harry Vinall then had an attempt go just wide and the final goal was scored by Josh Lee.  This was the last match for the under 9’s in 2011 and they managed to comfortably retain their top spot in the division for the Christmas period. Man of the match Harry Vinall.

Hilton Harriers Under  13s          3

Facing the league leaders for the second week in a row, Ashbourne put in another great team display before succumbing to a 3 – 1 defeat. The icy conditions made tackling and balance difficult but the central pairing of Regan Major and Ben Wildgoose coped well and were backed up with some confident calling and catching by the ever-improving Conor Sherry in goal. But it was the away side who adapted better to the hard ground, with some fluent play on the right hand side. They opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, when a missed tackle was punished. Hilton added a second shortly afterwards, when they penetrated from midfield past  the last defender and clipped the ball cleanly past the keeper. Aztecs then began to enjoy a good period of possession, with the whole midfield passing and moving well. Sam Birks covered an enormous amount of ground and created space for Matt Griffiths on the left and Bart Banks on the right. Josh Dutton and Will MacDonald Lowe were snapping at the heels of the Harriers’ play makers and causing them frustration. It was therefore a real blow when the opposition scored again just before the interval when a move on the left was not dealt with. The resulting shot was well stopped by Sherry but the loose ball was tapped in to make it three. Aztecs’ heads never went down though, and they pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time with a superb dipping shot by Liam Scott. A change in the formation brought more attacking options, with Max Winbow as the lone striker with Griffiths and Scott using their pace and skill on the wings. Birks and Dutton began to control the play with some tidy dribbling and passing in central areas. After a couple of heavy passes which the Hilton keeper collected, Birks set Scott free and his speed took him past the defence, only to see his shot narrowly clearing the bar. Ross Keeling and Lewis Pepper were more involved in supporting the front players and broke up some of the Hilton attacks as well. A Major free kick then fell to Birks but he struck the ball just wide. The visitors then had another spell of tidy passing football and forced a number of corners, but Sherry organised the defence well and Griffiths did well to get back and clear away twice in quick succession. Dan Lee also got a number of important interceptions in and combined with Wildgoose and Major to avert any danger. Banks came back on and was soon involved in a neat twist and turn which set Scott up again, but his shot was blocked on the edge of the box. Dutton then slipped a neat pass through to Griffiths but he had strayed offside. Keeling was playing further forward now and managed a final drive through the middle, but unfortunately it came to nothing and Aztecs ended up just missing out to Hilton again.

Match report – Ashbourne Aztecs Pumas U9s  0 v Pegasus Youth U9s 3

4/12/12

Another Sunday another defeat for the Pumas, who have yet to get a result in a strong league. This however is not through a lack of trying and the boys yet again set off with an explosive start, leaving the opposition in no doubt of their intentions to boss the game. Eric Prince and Regan Ford took up new positions in defence and held strong for the first 10 minutes, until unfortunately they conceded a soft goal to an opposition corner. The players as usual remained upbeat and confident of getting back in the game. Thomas Harris pushed on upfront, supported by Theo Rodgers and Max Bishop whose work rate in matches continues to impress. Thomas’s pace continued to worry Pegasus’s defence and an early chance which fell for him unfortunately hit the side netting harmlessly.

1.0 down the Pumas started to try and push up into the oppositions half, although this soon turned costly, as a Pegasus player was left unmarked. Taking his chance he slotted the ball into the net, much to the annoyance of Jack Banks who could only do so much. Again Pumas went on the attack, with Brody Bates and Eric feeding the forwards. Nathan Yardley and Samuel Robinson came on later in the first half and made impressive tackles to force back Pegasus. Half time could not come soon enough and it was only down to Jack in the Puma goal that the team were not losing by a greater margin.

The second half started with the same intention for the Pumas, play the ball in the Pegasus half and create an opportunity for Thomas or Theo. Unfortunately this again cost them, as Pegasus went on to grab a third decisive soft goal. As always the boys did not let this affect them and went on continuing to try and grab a late consolation goal. Thomas went off, while Theo pushed up front with Nathan and Regan. Max came on in defence for Samuel and tried to reduce any more goals going in, working well with Eric who appears to now have nailed his position as a central defender. He reads the game very well and is someone to look out for in the future. Theo Rodgers was awarded MOM for his efforts and is another young lad who is making good progress. With such determination and dogged commitment from this Pumas team, it must surely only be a matter of time before this side get some sort of reward for their efforts.

Field Lane                       1

Aztecs played out a well earned draw against 3rd placed Field Lane.  A close game with quality from both sides.  Aztecs started brightly with Luis Zambrano, Will Topham and Captain Jake Ridley battling to get the upper hand in midfield, the regular defensive pair of Kye Gordon and Jack Bill keeping it tight at the back, and Joseph Reed was looking good in goal.  The biggest asset was Lee Cranstone up front, who was not giving Field Lane’s highly rated centre back a minutes peace, this allowed Aztecs to open the scoring with a thunderbolt shot from substitute Mathew Pepper.  The other sub, Liam Warner added some bite in midfield.  Field Lane equalised midway through the 2nd half with a well taken move but the Aztecs responded and finished the game well, a point was a fair result to a cracking game. The Aztecs strength in depth showed with all 9 players more than playing their parts.  Man of the match was Jack Bill.

Team: Joseph Reed , Luis  Zambrano, Jack Bill , Kye Gordon,  Jake  Ridley(capt), Will Topham, Liam Warner, Lee Cranstone , Mathew Pepper.

Not Pretty but Effective

 Willington U 18’s 1 Aztec U18’s 2

Not the free flowing display the fans are used to, but Aztecs dug deep to move into the semi final of the cup.

Aztecs found Willington in fine form making the away team fight all the way. However Aztecs went close on several occasions in the first half, Richard Archer crossed for Dave Ebbrell to slide in the first, only to be ruled marginally offside. Sam Froggatt and Charles Mann both had chances but Willington looked dangerous on the break and indeed scored a breakaway goal on the half hour mark to make it 1-0 and that’s how the first half ended.

This was certainly not Aztecs at their finest but a determined Dave Sadler, Scott Sears, Charles Mann and Ross Hunter fought tenaciously to control midfield with Ollie Sanders and Callum Redfern causing problems on the flanks.

Sam Froggatts pace beat the defence three times only to find the Willington goalkeeper in outstanding form. Adam Lomas free kicks posed issues for Willington and a Sadler corner was met by a bullet header from Liam Walton- Gibson who equalised for 1-1. Tom Cresswell and Will Tomkinson worked well on the left with Tomkinson lashing in some fine crosses.

Willington continued to press and Billy Akers had to be in good form to prevent them from going ahead, however with 10 minutes remaining they almost did break the deadlock when they struck the post. With 5 minutes remaining, extra time beckoned but another Sadler corner was met by Walton – Gibson who drove in the winner from 10 yards.

In the end this was a gritty not pretty performance but moves Aztecs into the semis. All credit to Willington who made this a close encounter of the blood pressure kind.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards u9’s 0

Allestree Juniors Deportivo           2

This game was played in harsh winter conditions. The team knew it was important to work hard today not just to keep warm but to stop Allestree from scoring.
The Leopards started brightly despite the wind and driving rain. They got stuck in and tackled well, the stand in keeper Bailey was having a good game in an unfamiliar position. He was helped as ever by resolute defending from Birkett and Pattinson.
The midfield trio of Cockayne, Beresford and Cooper were also in fine form breaking up Allestree's possession and turning into attacks on the opposition goal. Centre forward Platt was holding the ball up well and distributing it well to his supporting players. Allestree were playing well but the Aztecs had got upperhand in the central midfield battle. Aztecs were playing well but because of the heavy rain chances were very few. Wibberley-Howe was now introduced into the game and immediately got stuck in and tackled well. Towards the midway point of the first half, Allestree juniors got a corner and after a slight mix up in the Leopards defence, the ball was bundled over the line 1-0 to Allestree .
The Leopards responded well by continuing their great tackling and searching passes to worry the opposition. This resulted in a fine move that started in defence. The ball was crossed in to Platt at the far post but his first time shot crashed against the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.
Half time came and the heavy rain had now stopped, Birkett took over in goal and Bailey came out into midfield. The 2nd half started in the same manner as the first with the Aztecs battling hard to keep Allestree to limited possesion. Even though it had stopped raining, it was still very cold and windy. Credit must go to both teams for playing well in such conditions. Leopards were pressing hard for an equaliser but not getting the run of the ball in the final third. They continued to battle well and work hard as a team.
With just a few minutes left, a long ball from right to left found an Allestree player in space and he looped a shot into the net to make it 2-0. This was the final score.
The Leopards should take huge pride from this game the way they played in difficult conditions. Their spirit and teamwork was terrific. Their support and belief in one another was also pleasing to see. This was a fine performance and although the game ended in defeat, a draw would have been a fairer result. Well played to all 8 players today.  Another encouraging display from the U9 Leopards.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s                     1

Hilton Harriers Under 13s                           2

Aztecs just missed out on a cup final place in a gripping match. The game was finely poised throughout , with both teams having good spells of the play. Ashbourne started well, with good possession by Sam Birks and Matt Griffiths on the left. Billy Owens was back to his confident best with some safe handling in goal. However, there were a few early scares in the defence as Josh Bailey and Regan Major both conceded possession and let Hilton in for two shots at goal, which fortunately went wide. Josh Dutton stood out in central midfield in a new man marking role. Charles Owens was holding the ball up well with Ross Keeling and Will MacDonald –Lowe supporting. Birks forced the Hilton goalkeeper into a full length save and then linked up with Lewis Pepper and Matt Griffiths to force a number of corners, but their opponents were strong in their headed clearances to alleviate any danger. The home side edged ahead after 15 minutes as a header by Dan Lee was pounced upon and the resultant through ball was converted to make it 1 – 0. In a re-organised midfield, Liam Scott added pace on the right whilst MacDonald-Lowe tucked inside and denied the Harriers any time on the ball. The second half started with Aztecs again on the front foot. Dutton was breaking up the play and Birks creating space to open up the Hilton defence as Griffiths and Scott both used their speed to pin the home side in their own half. Lee and Major were now coping well with any threat down the middle with their clever positional play and strong heading. Bart Banks used his speed to cover at right back. But Aztecs now found themselves under a period of intense pressure as Hilton forced a series of corners. Despite tight marking and organisation, Hilton nearly made it 2 – 0 when they struck the outside of the post. Owens then made a superb triple save from short range. Josh Challinor was also playing well with lots of closing down and short passing to Dutton and Birks. Ashbourne then received a hammer blow when a decent headed clearance was kicked straight back over Owens head from a speculative strike. Aztecs heads never went down and they continued to attack. Scott then raced away and centred for Griffiths but he couldn’t get enough power in his shot. At the other end, Keeling, Dutton, Banks and Challinor all made important clearances and Owens was forced into another good stop. Birks then combined with Scott to pull a goal back with an assured finish. Harriers knew they were still in a battle, but managed to hold on till the final whistle.

Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s            0

Hilton Harriers                            4

The under 12’s suffered their first league defeat of the season on Saturday against Hilton Harriers.  The scoreline did not justify the home team’s performance, as all four goals went in during the last 10 minutes of an hour long match.  The first half consisted of end to end play from two equally matched teams.  Sam Legrice, Oliver Reed and Harry Zona were all working well together passing the ball about and Jack Bowers was chasing every stray ball. Aztecs were at that point lying 1st in the division, and Hilton was lying 2nd.  The first chance for Hilton came from a corner and although there was a scramble in the box, it was Aztecs who managed to clear the attempt resulting in a further corner from the opposite side.  Will Smith, Aztecs’ defender, this time well and truly pounded the ball right back up the pitch and into Hilton’s half.  Again Hilton was on the attack but Jordan Burton, goalie for Aztecs, pulled off a fine save from the left.  The play was now at the other end, a ball was fed through to Tom Hodkinson which was denied by Hilton’s strong defensive wall.  Oliver Reed tried a long range shot but this went just wide of Hilton’s goal.  Kaylem Ocran was brought on to help the pace up front and almost achieved an immediate goal, but just backed off at the last all important moment.  Aztecs’ goalie was again on the move, coming right out to a loose ball and although he didn’t manage to grasp the ball, he blocked the angle and caused the Hilton striker to feed the ball across the goal mouth to his fellow player.  Daniel Morton nicely intercepted and cleared the ball from the danger zone.  A couple of good runs followed by Will Farr and Kaylem Ocran but with a wet and heavy pitch they lost steam following their runs, and failed to produce the final power shots into the back of the net.  Half time the result was 0-0 and Aztecs were very proud of their first half performance.  Hilton came out second half firing on all engines, they were determined not to let the 3 points slip away and were instantly shooting at Aztecs’ goal. Again a good clearance followed from Burton, and a save from a very dangerous corner kept them in the game.  Will Campbell and Jack Dean in defence were working tirelessly to prevent even more shots on goal.  Harry Zona at the other end had a good shot but unfortunately for Aztecs this landed in the goalie’s hands.  On the counter attack Hilton managed to score their first, a well taken shot from distance, which went way over the goalie’s head.  Kaylem Ocran had a chance at the other end but this was denied by Hilton’s goalie.  The second goal for Hilton came from a pacey shot which Aztecs’ keeper got his hand to but the ball rolled over the line.  Richard Rosewarne and Bradley Clowes were brought on in the closing stages to try and pull something out of the bag, but it was too late to claw it back. Hilton had very cleverly used all of the huge goals down at Mappleton playing fields to their advantage and achieved their dream win, knocking Aztecs’ off their top spot in the division.

Doveridge –  1

Aztecs u16 – 8

This was a highly talked about match as players were school friends competing against each other for the next round of the cup.

The first half was end to end with chances for both teams. Josh Timms for Aztecs was the one to open the score but with excellent keeping from Doveridge the half time score was 1-1.

With a half time team talk and input from all players the second half was completely different. Joshua Morris completely dominated the midfield and it wasn’t long before he advanced and found the net for a brace of goals.

Again midfield advanced allowing Dales and Munro-Jones to add a goal each.

With wingback Dan Lear back to full pace, crosses were fast and furious with chances for Ingram and Cundy to finish but it was Timms and Morris who ended up with a hatrick each.

The trouble with attacking football is the counter attack but the back four of Hellaby, Harrison, Watson and Walton Gibson closing everything down, keeper Mansfield only had to deal with some long range shots which he controlled as well as ever.

Team: Hellaby, Mansfield, Watson, Harrison, Cundy, Walton-Gibson, Dales, Munro Jones, Morris, Smith, Timms, Lear, Ingram.

Aztecs Pumas u9’s                  0

This was a game where the scoreline didn’t reflect how well these under 9’s had played.  This newly formed Aztecs team faced a well established organised squad, who are climbing the table with ease.  The game started with Aztecs’ 2nd goalie, Conor Phillips in charge of goal, George Lee Mallinson and Eric Prince in defence, Thomas Harris in midfield, the wings were manned by Regan Ford and Maxwell Bishop and the lone striker was Theo Rodgers.  This formation seemed to work well, the only criticism maybe that at times the Pumas drifted out of position, leaving huge gaps for Stockbrook to plough through.  At half time, the score was just 2-0 down and the coaches were optimistic that a first win of the season could still be achieved.  Unfortunately this wasn’t to be, Bradley Pegg and Thomas Barke were welcome additions giving extra strength at the back from Bradley and width to the game with Thomas, but the Aztecs players began to tire and three further goals went in for Stockbrook, two of which were neatly placed unsavable goals, the third came from a mistake in the box.  The Manager and coach in charge of this game were caretaking the side in the absence of the normal Manager, but they were both extremely impressed with the player’s performances since they last saw them.  Each player gave 100% which made the ‘Man of the Match’ award very difficult to present. This week the trophy went to Thomas Harris who was asked to play out of his normal position, he co-operated and fulfilled the role brilliantly.

Spondon Dynamos Yellow Sox     1

Last time Ashbourne played Spondon they scraped one point with a late equaliser, this time around they needed to win to stay ‘top’ of division 1.  The first half was evenly matched, although Luke Zona for Aztecs managed to slip away a goal for the home team, before the tiring from the strong wind against them really clicked in.  Joe Miller playing in midfield was clearing balls well and on the odd occasion that a ball broke free, the defending duo of Josh Lee and Adam Leigh was strong stopping everything in their path or putting the ball out of the danger area.  A couple of attempts by Spondon were saved by Ashbourne’s goalie, Ben Johnson, but just before half time the visitors pulled one back.  It was still either team’s game. Half time gave Aztecs chance for a breather, change one or two positions and this time they had the advantage of the wind being with them. Second half Tyler Burton and Adam Leigh worked well together providing balls for Luke Zona up front.  A hand ball in the box gave Aztecs a penalty, which Luke Zona took and put perfectly away.  Ashbourne were in front once again but the battling Spondon did not give up.  A corner taken by Adam Leigh, resulted in the ball landing at Zona’s feet and a battle in the box with Spondon’s defence and goalie, enabled Zona to push the ball through into the bottom corner, hat trick for Zona.  The last five minutes seemed to be never ending for the Ashbourne side. Spondon were unlucky not to pull one back from a couple of well taken corners and their striker had a brilliant run from midfield but before he could score, Harry Vinall and Joe Mee intercepted and put the ball out for Aztecs.  The final whistle blew, a battle of a game, but three well deserved points for Ashbourne and they had retained their first spot. Man of the match Joe Miller.

Breedon 5

Lions      1

A very windy day saw Breedon take advantage of the conditions and mount a lot of pressure on the Lions goal. It resulted in a goal which was guided in by the wind. Some neat football was played by Dixon, Harrison and Linley on the right but to no avail. The opposition were able to attack a lot but some solid tackles by Wainwright, Bryan and Simpson-Allsop and good saves by Cranstone kept them at bay.As the 1st half wore on and with the strong wind behind them Breedon went into halftime 5-0 up.

An inspired pep talk by the manager and coach sent the Lions out in a much more determined mood for the 2nd half. The lions mounted numerous attacks through Lumbard and Sims but Lumbard was singled out for special attention by the opposition with 2 markers.

Another attack saw Barbour narrowly miss after he had started a run from midfield with good link up with Gregory.

Eventually the Lions pressure paid off with a break from defence via Massey, Hellaby and forward to Linley who provided a great cross to Sims who scored. The lions were now looking for more but things just didn't go there way. They were unable to add any further goals but the 2nd half was a great team performance.

The opening ten minutes was the best football they have played this season, involving slick passing and movement by the whole team. Ross Keeling and Matt Griffiths both looked threatening on the wings and Regan Major and Dan Lee were assured in the centre of defence. Ashbourne enjoyed good possession and pressed forward, winning a string of corners, but the Barton defence stood firm. Eventually, Aztecs took the lead when Josh Dutton slipped a pass to Sam Birks, whose shot was just too hard for the Barton keeper to handle. Ten minutes later, Dutton made it two as he unleashed a screamer from well outside the box which swerved into the corner of the net . Max Winbow offered another option on the left, setting Charles Owens through to test the Barton keeper again. Owens then pounced again but struck his shot over the bar. The visitors then began to play some good passing football and found space on the flanks, which Ben Wildgoose and Jack Dean worked hard to close down. They also made themselves available as attacking wing backs on occasions which added to Aztecs attacking play. Owens continued to hold the play up well, but it was still a very finely balanced game as Barton reduced the deficit to 2 – 1 after 30 minutes. Barton’s half –time team talk was effective as they came out and played their best spell in the match, pinning Ashbourne back in their own half for nearly 15 minutes. This tested the whole back line, who headed away corners and cleared their lines much more cleanly than in the past few weeks. Conor Sherry was marshalling his defence confidently and made several fantastic saves, one at point blank range. Major and Lee were again strong in the air and in the tackle. Having weathered the storm, Aztecs began to build a platform to attack from midfield. Will MacDonald-Lowe had another industrious game alongside Keeling, Birks and Dutton who all ran tirelessly to win back possession. With 10 minutes remaining, Aztecs managed to restore their two goal advantage with a great team goal. MacDonald-Lowe won a strong tackle in midfield, passed infield to Keeling and his perfectly weighted pass was chased down by Birks, who just nicked it past the oncoming keeper. Barton responded with several substitutions which kept Aztecs alert but they were able to see the game out, with Dean particularly impressive with his speed and energy. So after a slow start to the season, Aztecs finished November undefeated for the whole month.

TEAM : Sherry, Wildgoose, Dean (captain), Lee, Major, Keeling, MacDonald-Lowe, Dutton, Birks, Griffiths, Winbow, C.Owens.

Ashbourne Aztecs U11's         2

Duffield Dynamo's U11's         1

Aztecs went into this cup tie facing a very good Duffield team who are top of their league.  The game began with Duffield the slightly better side.  Ten minutes gone Aztecs conceded a corner which was cleared to the edge of the box where they lost the ball and the ball was played wide by Duffield, who put in a good ball across the box where a forward was waiting to slide it in at the far post.  1 - 0 to Duffield.  As the half progressed Aztecs midfield of Oliver Thompson, Adam and Michael Gerrard started to boss the midfield.  The two forwards Keane Bond and Tom Wheeldon put Duffield defense under pressure.  This paid off just before half-time, a ball was played over the Duffield defense, Keane Bond chased the ball just beating the onrushing keeper and flicking the ball over him, rounding the keeper he beat the covering defenders to force the ball over the line 1-1.

The second half began with both teams playing some good football.  Midway through the half Aztecs played the ball forward, Duffield defended the attack but Aztecs battled to get the ball back.  The ball fell to live wire Keane Bond who chipped the ball into an empty net from twenty yards out 2-1.  Changes were made with the impressive pair of Marcus Hooley and Jake Kelly being replaced by Jason Ainsworth and Alex Moss.  The game was a great advert for cup football with both teams working hard.  Aztecs replaced the busy pair of Keane Bond and Tom Wheeldon with Harry Collins and Benedict Broughton who both did very well.  As the Duffield team began to put the pressure on, Aztecs put their bodies on the line blocking everything they could throw at them.  Matt Bacon dealt with everything efficiently in the Aztecs goal.  Stephen Elliott was an absolute rock in the middle of the defense, heading the ball away, making tackles and blocking shots.  Duffield tried everything in the last five minutes but Aztecs stood firm.  The final whistle sounded with Aztecs through to the next round - very well done.

Man of the Match:  Stephen Elliott for leading the team like a true captain, winning the ball and organising the team on the pitch.

Team:  Bacon, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, Hooley, Kelly, Elliott, Thompson, Bond, Wheeldon, Collins, Moss, Ainsworth and Broughton.

Ashbourne Aztecs u10's  3

Field Lane                      2

Field Lane beat Aztecs narrowly in the league so this game was always going to be close from kick off.
Ashbourne had the better start though and after coming close a few times Will Topham set up a brilliant goal by Elliot Murray, there were chances for both teams early on and some great defending by Jack Bill and fantastic tackling by Kye Gordon kept the Aztecs in it. Field lane had plenty of chances but it was Ashbourne who doubled their score halfway through the first half when a fantastic kick by Lee Cranstone was met by Liam Warner who had no trouble hitting the back of the net. Despite having a two goal lead Aztecs didn't give up, they kept battling and nobody was to blame when Field lane got one goal back through some fantastic play of their own just before half time. After half time the opposition came back with vengeance and once again scored a fantastic goal to level up the score. Ashbourne had plenty of chances to go back ahead through Luis Zambrano's fantastic passes and Ben Wainwright's perfect corners but Field lanes goalkeeper kept them in it with minutes to go. As it was a cup game there was two five minute halves of extra time before penalties, as it turned out Ashbourne only needed two minutes of the first half before some great midfield work by Will Topham and Luis Zambrano fell to Jake Ridley who put in the pass of the season to Elliot Murray who finished it calmly to score his second and Ashbourne's third. From then on Aztecs were in firm control and just played their own football for the remainder of the game. Fantastic performance boys!

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards 3

Etwall u9’s                            2

Aztecs Leopards were playing against somewhat unknown opposition in the form of Etwall. Both teams started brightly and passionately due to it being a cup game.
It was clear after 5 mins that this was going to be a nerve racking game.  Etwall looked very dangerous on the counter attack. Aztecs were bossing the game and were attacking at will. Etwall were keeping Aztecs at bay mainly thanks to their goalkeeper making save after save. Good defending from Leo Cooper, Ben Pattinson and Will Birkett was keeping the score at 0-0. Also fine goalkeeping from Aaron Kingaby was crucial to keep it goalless. Etwall were a constant threat on the counter attack. The midfield duo of Calum Wood and Owen Bailey were playing very well but being over- run by the 3 Etwall midfielders. Etwall soon took the lead 1-0.
The management team made a tactical switch and changed the formation from 3-2-1 to 2-3-1 to make it 3 in midfield. This put Etwall under more pressure. Half time came and this gave Aztecs time to have a chat and re focus.
Aztecs started the 2nd half well pressing and attacking Etwall. But the game was following the same pattern as the first half with Etwall's keeper making save after save. The Aztec's supporters must have wondered whether it was going to be one of those days.
Sam Glossop and Taylor Platt both sharing the lone strikers role were also getting in good positions. Calum Wood put in another thunderous shot which rattled the bar but did not cross the line.
Sam Glossop found himself in the box and managed to shoot but again the keeper saved it. Owen Bailey pounced on the rebound and coolly put it in the bottom corner to make it 1-1. This gave the Aztecs a boost and now increased their energy levels to get another goal.
But the Etwall goalkeeper was having an excellent game saving almost everything coming at him. Give the Leopards their due they kept attacking looking for a second goal.
With 5 minutes to go, the Leopards finally got that vital 2nd goal. After great work from Calum Wood and Sam Glossop the ball broke to Owen Bailey in the penalty area and he made no mistake for his 2nd goal of the game. The great support of the parents must have thought that was the winner. But credit to Etwall they never gave up and with only seconds left they scored to take the game to extra time.
The Leopards regrouped and with a little inspiration talk from the managers started extra time confidently. Still the game followed the same pattern as normal time with Etwall keeping Aztecs at bay.
Another good cross from Calum Wood was headed just wide from Owen Bailey, just missing out on his hatrick . Tommy Cockayne and Alex Cheetham were now on the pitch maintaining the excellent performance and tackling and passing well.
Aztecs were attacking in waves now and another cross from right winger Calum Wood was superbly side footed into the net by Taylor Platt to make it 3-2. The Leopards continued to play well but did not let the lead go this time and kept the score the same throughout the 2nd 5minutes of extra time. The game finished with the score at 3-2. Another fine cup win for the Leopards! All ten squad members should be proud of themselves for another gritty and excellent performance. The management duo and parents were hugely pleased with all the lads and this was an excellent win. The Leopards are now through to quarter finals.  Very well played lads.

Ashbourne Aztecs Lions 1

Chellaston Boys               6

Following several weeks without games, the Lions returned to action to face Chellaston Boys, a team who comprehensively beat them earlier in the season.

The game started competitively, with Chellaston seeing plenty of possession and the Lions defending stoutly. With several good moves by the away side, keeper Alex Cranstone was again in commanding form to keep the game goalless. Midway through the first half, a break down the wing resulted in a near post shot finding the net for Chellaston.

This sparked the Lions into attack, with Daniel Harrison and Marcus Lumbard combining well to set Jake Sims down the left and when his powerful shot hit the post, the Lions saw an equaliser coming. They did not have to wait long, as Dan Harrison’s dramatic run from midfield ended on a one-on-one with the Chellaston keeper and as both boys were on the floor the ball fell loose for Sims to tap it into an open net.

The well established defence of Simpson-Allsop, Bryan, Wainwright and Dixon kept the visitors at bay until an unlucky rebound set Chellaston up for their second just before half time.

The second half was a different story as the Lions suffered injuries allowing Chellaston Boys to take advantage and concede four more goals.

Team:

Ashbourne Aztecs u9’s Juniors      11

Mickleover Jubilee u9’s                    1

Aztecs were first to attack Mickleover’s goal with a shot hitting the crossbar from Tyler Burton.  Luke Zona, also for Aztecs, followed with the ball going slightly wide of the post and James Donlan had his attempt saved by Mickleover’s goalie.  On the return, Mickleover’s advances were stopped by Toby Ainsworth, standing strong in defence.  Play continued in much the same manner with attempts either being saved, going wide or over the top of the net.   George Martin was keeping Mickleover at bay and feeding balls relentlessly back down the field.  A ball picked up by Adam Leigh in midfield, was crossed to Luke Zona who fired home the first goal of the game. Josh Lee came onto relieve Toby Ainsworth’s pressure in defence and immediately made his mark on the game, with great balls being fed down the wings to the midfield and the front three.  It was Mickleover who were next to score, they caught Aztecs’ goalie Ben Johnson off his line, and fired home into an empty goal 1-1. At this point Aztecs seemed to go into top gear and were on the attack constantly.  A corner taken by Tyler Burton landed straight at the feet of Luke Zona, who struck the ball confidently into the back of the net for Aztecs’ 2nd.  James Donlan then fed through a ball to Tyler Burton, who scored brilliantly 3-1.  Donlan and Burton were becoming the dazzling duo with Tyler finishing off James’ shot, and then James finishing off Tyler’s attempt, two goals in quick succession making it 5-1 to Aztecs. The goal of the game came next from Luke Zona as he managed to curl the ball from a corner, into the back of the Mickleover goal.  Harry Vinall, making his debut for Ashbourne, took on players down the wings and almost scored on his first outing, James Donlan was soon on the scene to make sure the ball went in. Again two more goals followed in quick succession, one a half volley by Luke Zona, and the second was an excellent shot from Adam Leigh.  Nathan Munro was now in the holding position at the back feeding balls down the pitch for his fellow players.  The fifth goal for Zona and Aztecs’ 10th was well planned by Tyler and Luke, passing the ball along the length of the pitch, avoiding the tackles of the opposition, and neatly finished by a Zona chip over the goalie’s head.  The final goal of the game for Aztecs resulted from Tyler Burton side sliding the ball into the net.  In the closing stages Ben Johnson cleared a likely goal for Mickleover and the scoreline ended 11-1. Man of the match was awarded to Adam Leigh who worked tirelessly in the midfield role, not just in this game but in all previous weeks since joining the club.

Class Act from Aztecs

 Aztec U18’s 8 Melbourne U18’s 0

From the start Aztecs meant business and mounted a series of attacks before Richard Archer fired in a cracking first goal .Sam Froggatt and Harry Wibberley made a number of probing runs from the flanks which ended in Dave Ebbrell slotting in the second providing a cushion and platform for a slick Aztecs performance.

Moments later Ollie Sanders, Alex Drummond combined to set up Archer for his third .A terrific volley from Dave Sadler made it four and close to halftime Liam Walton-Gibson added a fifth from a corner.

Changes of personnel added continued impetus and Tom Cresswell and Will Tomkinson continually threatened Melbourne on the right and from a Tomkinson delivery, Sam Froggatt deservedly got on the score sheet yet again to make it 6-0.

Brad Greenway almost got the goal of the game when he chipped two defenders and crashed in a ferocious volley, which the keeper palmed over.

Adam Lomas nearly got his deserved 18th birthday present with two well-taken free kicks but the Melbourne keeper was in fine form.

Ross Hunter played solidly at centre back alongside Lomas who both closed down any threats from the opposition and delivered some effective passes from defence.

To their credit Melbourne battled throughout and were denied a consolation goal by the dependable Billy Akers.

A run from Tomkinson ended in a pinpoint cross which goal a game Mitch Coxon headed in for 7-0.

Callum Redfern played in an unfamiliar centre forward position but took the final goal like a seasoned striker.

This was a class performance, which keeps Aztecs at the top of the table.

Melbourne United                                    0

A ten goal flurry was the order of the day for the Ashbourne Aztecs under 12’s.  Credit should also go to the visitors, Melbourne United, for keeping their heads up and battling throughout the entire game.  Melbourne was caught out by the speedy attacks of Kaylem Ocran, Tom Hodkinson, Jack Bowers, Harry Zona and Will Farr.  The lads had been practicing their running at school this week and it certainly paid off for Aztecs. The first half brought 7 goals, a hat trick for Will Farr, 1 goal for Tom Hodkinson, 2 for Jack Bowers and 1 for Will Smith.  Sam Legrice in midfield stopped everything which came his way from Melbourne, and on the odd occasions that the visitors broke through, Will Campbell, Jack Dean, Oliver Reed, Ben Warner and Archie Shaw confidently cleared them away. The latter made an excellent goal line clearance just before half time to bring Aztecs in with a clean sheet after 30 minutes.  In the second half Harry Zona made some good runs but was denied either by the keeper or the ball going wide of the post. Two more goals followed for Will Farr and one from Tom Hodkinson rounding up the scoring to double figures.  Jordan Burton, Aztecs’ goalie,  made life quite difficult for himself in the closing stages by failing to clear the ball immediately off his line, his defence was that he needed to practice his skills?!  It brought a smile to his fellow player’s faces and the game ended on a high, the under 12’s retain their ‘top spot’ in the division 1 of the Derby City league.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s       7

Cobra Oakwood Under 13s          3

This was another solid Aztecs performance, especially in the first half. They attacked from the start and were soon in front from a long range effort by Sam Birks. He continued to cause trouble for the Oakwood defence with his skilful dribbling and added a second goal from a tight angle on the left. Cobra began to test the Ashbourne back four of Dan Lee, Regan Major, Josh Bailey and Liam Scott, but they settled well once they had got used to the slow pitch. Josh Dutton was enjoying the space in the middle of the park and was threading some sharp passes through for Ross Keeling and Will MacDonald – Lowe. On the left, Scott and Birks combined with Griffiths who sprinted beyond his full back and finished tidily with a low shot. Keeling was lively on the right and had several attempts thwarted by smart saves. Aztecs added a fourth when a long throw from Scott seemed to be going out for a goal kick, but Dutton chased down a lost cause and squared the ball for Keeling to tap in. Major was dominant in the air and also made some strong tackles on the floor, but the defence were not really being troubled. Just before the break, Aztecs increased their lead with a lovely counter attack down the right. Bailey’s clearance was controlled by Keeling and his first time pass found Charles Owens, whose delicate chip cleared the goalkeeper. Into the second half,  it took a while for Jack Dean, Josh Challinor and Bart Banks to adapt to the pace of the game, however, they persevered and were effective in winning back possession. Lewis Jones was more effective when he found himself with space on the left wing, and eventually his ball fell kindly for Owens who sent a stinging shot past the opposition keeper.  Oakwood pulled a goal back with their own counter attack and this upset Aztecs’ rhythm for a while. They lost a bit of shape as Cobra began to push forward, but Birks steadied the ship again with a fierce shot to complete his hat trick. Scott replaced Owens up front and his speedy runs caused problems for the home side, but their keeper was equal to everything hit at him. Dean was solid at left-back and Keeling and Banks were both offering width on the right but most of the attacks were going through the centre which became congested. A mix up in defence then let Oakwood in to double their tally. Ashbourne  responded with more scoring opportunities. First, Scott went round the keeper but screwed the ball wide; then Keeling cut inside and crossed from the byline but the ball was scrambled away for a corner; and finally, Dutton was denied a good penalty shout. Almost immediately, the ball was in the back of the Aztecs net for Oakwood’s third goal after a great Dean tackle was not cleared properly. But the away side managed to close the game out to complete their third victory in a row.

TEAM : B.Owens, Bailey, Scott, Lee (captain), Major, Dean, Banks, Keeling, Dutton, Birks, Griffiths, MacDonald –Lowe, Challinor, Jones, C.Owens

12th & 13th November:

Pumas 0 Etwall United 5

The match began with an impeccably observed minute's silence as the lads reflected on the sacrifices others make which allow us to play football on a Sunday afternoon. Pumas started with Jack Banks in goal and he made plenty of good saves learning from the specialist coaching session last weekend with most shots sticking. At the back we played Thomas Barke and Regan Ford who form a strong partnership difficult to break through. Our developing player in defence was Nathan Yardley who concentrated hard and got into position well making some good tackles. We played Conor Phillips and Bradley Pegg in the middle and they put in some fierce tackles, which I am sure will enable the Etwall middlemen to have cause to remember playing Pumas. The developing player in the middle was Brody Bates who is picking up well in terms of positioning and made some telling interception particularly on the edge of our box. Up front we played Thomas Harris with Eric Prince along side. They both played very well in deed. However the nod in a battling performance for man of the match went to Eric who got into some great positions, almost scored on three occasions, did exactly what he was asked by sprinting into the box to support some great crossing by Thomas Harris.

The first half was a great exhibition of solid shape from Pumas and there were as many shots at Etwall as at Pumas. Conor Phillips hit one from the edge of the box which the keeper saved well, Thomas Harris had several great shots and Eric Prince almost got the best of a couple of goalmouth scrambles. But fair play to Etwall their defence was very good. We had fallen behind to an early goal but it looked all set for 1-0 at the turnaround when a speculative punt was scrambled in as the very breath of the ref was about to vibrate the pea in his whistle.

The second half was also finely balanced, a free kick from Thomas Harris was fumbled by the Etwall keeper but as quick as Conor Phillips and Eric Prince were to get to the spill, one of the talented Etwall defenders managed to toe-poke it clear. There were plenty of other efforts including a run from his own half by Thomas Harris who hit a right foot shot with swerve away from the keeper but it flashed just the wrong side of the upright. A striker needs to have confidence to try the difficult rather than just make the keeper work and as such I was very pleased with Thomas Harris' decision making, as next time it will smack in the corner.

Three second half goals included a superbly flighted free kick and a sweet three man move led to a flattering 5-0 scoreline. Positives were, no goals from corners which was great application from the lads after training on Thursday, much better communication, plenty of chances and flying tackles.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             0              Field Lane Blue Sox U9’s              0

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards ended a run of two defeats with a hard fought goalless draw against a tough Field Lane side.

The Leopards started the game brightly with Ben Pattinson, Jack Beresford and Will Birkett once again solid in defence meaning that Aaron Kingaby in goal had very little to do in the opening 20 minutes. All 3 lads were solid in the tackle and were also happy to bring the ball away when they had the chance to do so.

The midfield pairing of Owen Bailey and Calum Wood, together with Sam Glossop in the lone strikers’ role combined time and time again with a series of neat moves but the breakthrough proved elusive.

The best opportunity of the half came when a loose goal kick from the Field Lane keeper fell straight to Calum Wood, but his pile-driver was somehow scrambled away at the second attempt as the keeper made amends for his error.

Half time saw Leopards ring the changes with Taylor Platt and Leo Cooper coming into defence, Jacob Wibberley-Howe coming into midfield and Tommy Cokayne taking over the striking role. All four of the subs slotted easily into their positions and the Leopards continued to look for the breakthrough.

The second half, however, was a much more even contest and as the Leopards pushed for that elusive goal there were holes starting to appear in the defensive wall. Aaron Kingaby pulled off some fantastic saves to keep the score goalless and the new defensive trio of Platt, Pattinson and Cooper all made excellent last ditch tackles as the never say die team spirit was again on display.

With time running out Leo Cooper was tripped just outside of the box to give the Leopards a good chance from a free kick, but although Taylor Platt got the ball over the wall it was blocked and the game finished in a stalemate.

All of the lads worked very hard to get something from this tough match and can now look forward to the cup game next week. Man of the Match was Ben Pattinson for yet another solid performance and for marshalling the defence so well yet again.

Aztecs move into Quarterfinals

Belvedere U 17’s 2 Aztec U18’s 7

Aztecs moved into the quarter final of the cup with an emphatic victory over a resilient Belvedere side.

Just before kick off Phil Lomas of Hatton Tyres/Exhaust and MOT Centre presented Aztecs with their new shirts and they repaid Phil with a fine display of attacking football.

The first 20 minutes was even with Aztecs taking the lead through a fine solo effort from Richard Archer. Minutes later, Belvedere got their just rewards when they equalised.

Sam Froggatt terrorised the home defence and after a number of close shaves he put Aztecs ahead on the stroke of halftime.

After the break Aztecs began to assert their authority through some outstanding play in midfield from Dave Sadler, Alex Drummond, Scott Sears and Harry Wibberley, who all played some superb passes for the forwards to thrive on. A shot from Froggatt was charged down but landed to ‘on song’ Archer who fired in the third.

However Belvedere continued to press and following a fine save from Billy Akers they followed up the rebound to make it 2-3.

This only inspired the Aztec team to press forward and the dangerous Froggatt soon chipped in the fourth and fifth and his hatrick.

Dave Ebbrell and Kyran Bell came on and both narrowly missed the target before Will Tomkinson stole in on the back post for 2-6.

The defensive quartet of Adam Lomas, Liam Walton-Gibson, Callum Redfern and Ross Hunter put in a sterling performance to minimise chances from a difficult forward line.

Ollie Sanders and Sadler played a one two on the edge of the box, which ended in Mitch Coxon heading in his second goal in two weeks for 2-7. Aztecs, who are showing some fine form in recent weeks move into the next round.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s     4

Codnor Boys Under 13s              2

With a depleted squad of just 12 players, Aztecs  drew upon all their reserves and tremendous team spirit to produce a well deserved victory against Codnor Boys. The lads observed a minute’s silence for Remembrance, wearing their new away kit which had been kindly donated by Max Lee. They went on the offensive from the kick off and were nearly ahead in the first few minutes when Matt Griffiths fed Sam Birks, whose crisp volley was well saved by the home side’s goalkeeper. Griffiths also provided some swinging crosses which caused concern for the Codnor defenders. Against the run of play, the opposition scored first with a speculative cross shot which slipped through Conor Sherry’s hands. But Aztecs did not panic, with the back four of Ross Keeling, Dan Lee, Regan Major and Lewis Pepper working well as a unit. The central midfield pairing of Josh Dutton and Will MacDonald- Lowe was effective in denying space and winning most of the 50-50 balls. Liam Scott enjoyed the good service up front and came close with two snap shots. Birks was spraying some great passes left and right which kept the pressure on Codnor. He then fired in a pinpoint corner which Major headed home for the equaliser. Dutton then set up Keeling whose shot was deflected off the keeper’s foot and Scott tried to chip him but to no avail. The home side came out after the interval with more urgency. They forced Aztecs back into their own half, but the defence remained organised, with strong heading by Ben Wildgoose, Josh Dutton and Dan Lee. Sherry also caught some difficult high balls looking into the sun. However, midway through the second half, they did not track one of the Codnor forwards, who beat the offside trap before bundling  the ball into the net. Again, the team rallied and kept playing their neat passing movements. Keeling pushed forward and combined well with Birks and MacDonald-Lowe on the right. Griffiths then set Scott through and he controlled the ball and finished well to bring the scores level. Aztecs were continuing to dominate the central midfield with some terrific tackling and covering for each other. Major and Lee remained solid in the centre of defence and Sherry’s long kicks kept the pressure on Codnor. Dutton won a ball in his own half and found Birks with a bit of space. His whipped shot from outside the box cleared the keeper and Aztecs were ahead for the first time. Ashbourne then had to withstand further attacks from their opponents, including a shot which struck the bar. But the whole defence kept their concentration and composure to hold on to the lead. Max Winbow was now playing the lone striker’s role and worked tirelessly to close down the space in front of the Codnor defence. Griffiths switched to the left flank and was unlucky not to score with his left foot strike.  There was then a quick Aztecs counter attack which ended with Scott’s shot being cleared off the line. A few minutes later, he did complete his brace with a strong finish after a second assist by Dutton. Ashbourne continued to press right till the end and deserved to hold onto their two goal advantage. Credit goes to every single player for a tremendous victory to seal Aztecs first league win of the season.

TEAM : Sherry (captain), Keeling, Wildgoose, Pepper, Major, Lee, MacDonald-Lowe, Dutton, Birks, Griffiths, Winbow, Scott

5th & 6th November:

Aztecs U16’s     – 6

Ashby Ivanhoe – 2

Aztecs started the game confidently but were soon on the back foot as they let Ashby storm in with two goals, one from a free kick, and the other from a pounding strike into the bottom corner. The score remained up to half time 2-0 to Ashby, time for team talk and revised strategy.

Aztecs got back to basics with their normal passing game and it wasn’t long before they were on the score sheet with goals from Timms, Smith and Dales.

Once settled in Jake Smith scored again, but injured himself in doing so, which meant a quick shuffling around of players was needed.

With Burnhope, Avery, Bean and Cundy in defence, there was no way through for Ashby, which made it easy for Morris to cross a ball perfect for Dales to get his brace.

Aztecs were on a role and even defender Harrison Avery got on the score sheet with a perfect header into the back of the net.

Pumas 0 New Boulton 6

It would not take Sir Alex Ferguson long to work out the coaching plan for next week as Pumas managed to let in five goals from corners including three own goals. It looks like corners, corners and more corners for Thursday night. However there was much to be positive about especially a much more disciplined performance in terms of positional concentration. This was the key message from last week so well done lads for taking that to heart.

It almost reads as a given that Pumas matched their second placed rivals blow for blow in a tight first half turning around only 1-0 down. That goal was after about five minutes from a corner which cannoned in off a Puma heel in the manner of the sort of random finish of an over the shoulder throw in a fairground hoopla.

The team lined up with Jack Banks happily recovered from a worrying stomach problem after last week's game to take up the gloves. He performed solidly as ever and produced a couple of trademark dives to push shots around the post. The sun was quite strong in the second half and was right in Jack's eyes which may have been a contributory factor for the fact that five goals went in during that period.

At the back The full wall returned with Thomas Barke rejoined by Bradley Pegg. Bradley was particularly impressive today and in the second half got forward more linking up well with Conor  Philllips. Regan played the link man destroyer role well covering play and having a few good shots. In the middle Conor Phillips and Theo Rodgers  both performed very well and presented a battling front which enabled Pumas to get plenty of the ball. Up front was Maxwell Bishop who did well making a nuisance of himself and we had much more of the ball in the final third than we have had recently. Samuel Robinson did well when rotating with Bradley in defence and he is begining to really understand the importance of formation. Brody Bates is a real trier and did well when coming into midfield to give Conor and Theo rests

We held out well in the early part of the second half but the corners kept coming and alongside was the goals. In fact it appeared that New Boulton's tactic was to stick three on the edge of the area and then boot it in to the four Pumas in the box looking for richochets. More often than not this caused chaos as the ball appeared to be attracted by some kind of magnet as the sort of in-offs a master billiards player would have salivated over kept happening.

Another aspect which became more prevailant as the game went on was that Pumas defensive line was too deep and when we are at our best is when the line is high and thus the support to midfield effective. These lessons are all part of the lads development and if they apply the remedy together with a continuation of the tough determination all the lads showed today we will begin winning rather than being a team difficult to breakdown for half an hour.

Newhall Cougars U 18’s 0 Aztec U18’s 4

For the first half hour Aztecs knew they would have to dig deep and perform to their capacity to take the points, as Newhall competed well and it was a world class save from Billy Akers which prevented the home side from taking the lead.

Ross Hunter on the left defended resolutely and provided some effective passes for forwards Sam Froggatt and Will Tomkinson to feed on. With 10 minutes of the half remaining Alex Drummond and Tom Cresswell linked up to provide Dave Sadler with an opportunity to head home which he despatched confidently.

This spurred Aztecs on and just on the stroke of halftime Scott Sears sent Sam Froggatt away and the striker slotted in the second, ending the half 0-2.

Newhall continued to ask questions of the Aztecs defence but the purposeful central pairing of Adam Lomas and Liam Walton-Gibson, ably supported by fullbacks Callum Refern and Ollie Sanders  and acrobatic Akers ,stifled any hopes of a comeback.

Richard Archer made a number of probing runs on the left which ended in Froggatt running in to bustle home the third.

Drummond, Sadler and Cresswell were a highly effective trio in midfield putting in both telling tackles and passes. A superb free kick from Lomas found Mitch Coxon in the box who headed in the fourth and Aztecs went marching on, in a game, which tested their credentials. Aztecs consolidate their lead at the top but next week is Cup duty away to Belvedere.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards u9's 2

Chesapeake                                         3

The Leopards hosted Chesapeake in another tough league encounter . Both teams started brightly and the game was evenly matched .
Aztecs slowly got more and more into the match, helped by resolute defending by Ben Pattinson and William Birkett . They were helped as ever by fine goalkeeping from Aaron Kingaby .
The midfield trio of Tommy Cockayne , Leo Cooper and Jack Beresford were also getting more time and space to put Chesapeake under pressure with several attacks. This resulted in the Leopards taking the lead through an excellent low shot from striker Calum Wood making it 1-0 .
This shocked Chesapeake because no sooner had the game restarted that an attack lead to an equaliser for the opposition . 1-1 . The Leopards continued to press for another goal but the score remained the same upto half time .
Chesapeake started the 2nd half much better than the Leopards. The home team were battling hard , it was Chesapeake that scored again to make it 1-2 . Aztecs continued in the same manner,  making it hard work for Chesapeake . The 3 substitutes of Alex Cheetham , Jacob Wibberley-Howe and Jack Harding were now on the pitch . They got straight into action and battled hard for an equaliser .
Chesapeake now were on top and with the wind at their backs they scored a third goal , 1-3 . The leopards did not let their heads drop and persisted in tackling well and tried hard to get back into the game . Another attack that started in defence with Will Birkett who passed the ball into Leo Cooper . The central midfielder released Calum Wood who fired another low shot right into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-3 .
The leopards sensed that an equaliser was just around the corner and pushed hard for that all important third goal . Alas the leopards ran out of time and the match finished in defeat , 2-3 .
This was another fine performance from the Leopards who continue to show great spirit and determination . It is credit to whole squad that they play their football with this spirit and never let their heads drop . It is very pleasing that they battle hard right to the final whistle.

Ashbourne Aztecs Juniors u9’s               3

Aztecs were first out of the starting blocks with a couple of attempts at goal by James Donlan and Charlie Land; both however were saved by Melbourne’s ‘in form’ keeper.  It was Luke Zona for Ashbourne who was first to score, his shot on goal deflected slightly off Melbourne’s defence, but luckily found the back of the net 0-1 to Aztecs.  A ‘high leg’ in the box resulted in a penalty for Melbourne, which was taken and saved admirably by Ashbourne’s keeper, Ben Johnson.  Good passing between James Donlan and Tyler Burton along the length of the field resulted in a final cross to Charlie Land, who struck the ball with such pace that it surely found the back of the net;  giving Aztecs their second goal.  A substitution of Josh Lee followed into defence with Luke Zona coming off in midfield and Adam Leigh moving from defence to mid.  Adam Leigh worked tirelessly in both defence and midfield, but was brought off in the second half and replaced with the fresh legs of Joe Mee.  A further substitution was made with George Martin coming off for Joe Miller, giving all players a fair chance on the pitch. Second half continued just as the first despite the changes to play, again excellent passing, moving into space and lining shots up for each other, came from Charlie Land, James Donlan and Tyler Burton.  The latter had a couple of attempts in quick succession at goal, one being a header which went over the top of the cross bar and the second being a ‘one on one’ from a run through from midfield, but again the Melbourne keeper cleaned up nicely.  It was James Donlan who put the game to bed with his excellent goal into the top corner.  In the closing stages Melbourne tried to pull a goal back, but Ben Johnson for Ashbourne saved the ball confidently.  Man of the match went to Joe Mee, who as a fairly new player into the team, held his midfield position well, put in some good tackles, shots and passes throughout his time on the pitch.

Team:  Joe Mee, Joe Miller, George Martin, Josh Lee, Luke Zona, Tyler Burton, James Donlan, Ben Johnson, Adam Leigh & Charlie Land.

Aztecs started the game positively and there were chances early on for Joe Reed and Matthew Pepper but despite great defending by Kye Gordon and Jack Bill it was Allestree that scored the opening goal through some good football of their own. Ashbourne didn't let this get the better of them though and Will Topham came close just before a Jake Ridley shot was deflected into the net to equal out the score. Ashbourne looked set to score more and some fantastic play by Luis Zambrano and Joe Reed in the middle nearly put Aztecs in front but an unfortunate high leg in the box meant a penalty to Allestree and they wasted no time making it 2-1. Despite being on the back foot Aztecs played some fantastic football and had some great chances but also did some brilliant tackling with Kye Gordon and Liam Warner, seconds before the final whistle went, Ashbourne failed to clear a corner and Allestree scored their third. The lads played fantastically and should be proud of themselves! Well done boys keep doing what your doing and results will come!

Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s          8

Loughborough Emmanuel      1

Aztecs got off to a blazing start with a goal from the right by Tom Hodkinson.   Sam Legrice also tried his hand from the right, but was denied by Loughborough’s keeper.  From the goal kick, Oliver Reed picked up the ball for Aztecs in midfield, fed through to Kaylem Ocran, who went on an amazing run down the wing and scored out of the reach of the keeper, 2-0 to Aztecs.  Richard Rosewarne put in a couple of good runs but the Ashbourne side then started to sit back and lose their sense of urgency. Loughborough had a couple of attempts saved by Jordan Burton, Aztecs’ goalie, and any attempts to approach Loughborough’s goal were cleaned up by their keeper.  The battle was really in midfield, each team trying to gain control of the ball.  Daniel Morton, Oliver Reed and Sam Legrice were all trying to feed the ball through to the goalscorers up front, as were Loughborough. Just prior to half time, the visiting team pulled a goal back and they must have gone in feeling quite positive and that a ‘come back’ was on the cards.  This wasn’t to be as an ‘own goal’ at the start of the second half gave Aztecs the edge, the addition of Ben Warner, Kacper Stoch and Bradley Clowes to the team, brought back Ashbourne’s sense of determination, and from this point they never looked back.  Tom Hodkinson’s 2nd goal and Aztecs’ fourth; was brilliantly achieved by dribbling round the keeper and placing the ball neatly in the bottom corner.  Kaylem Ocran, also for Aztecs, then caught the keeper off his line and scored quite comfortably into an open goal.  Next to add his name to the scoresheet was Ben Warner with a shot perfectly set up by Tom Hodkinson.  A one on one situation between Loughborough's keeper and Ashbourne's Tom Hodkinson led to Hodkinson casually chipping the keeper and the ball dipping just below the cross bar for his 'hat trick'. Although it may seem that all the play was upfront for Aztecs, this wasn’t the case, Ashbourne’s defence in the game was outstanding.  Will Smith was having an excellent game, skillfully taking on players, dribbling past them and striding out towards the midfield. Jack Dean, Will Campbell and Bradley Clowes were clearing everything which came their way.  Harry Zona, after a couple of shots wide of the post, managed to score from the right taking Aztecs lead to 8-1.  In the latter part of the game it looked like Aztecs were going to achieve double figures with Kacper Stoch and Tom Hodkinson combining well, followed by the impressive duo of  Oliver Reed & Harry Zona.  The final whistle blew, a comfortable win for Aztecs, 6 out of 6 league games unbeaten, taking them to the top of division 1.

West Hallam Juniors Under 13s      2

Aztecs won this hard fought contest to book their place in the semi-final of the cup. They were competitive in midfield from the kick-off, with Sam Birks and Josh Dutton enjoying good possession. Dan Lee and Regan Major were winning everything in the centre of defence and this enabled Ashbourne to settle into their passing game, with some slick interplay between Lewis Pepper, Matt Griffiths and Charles Owens. Liam Scott showed some great bursts of speed on the right and earned a corner, which he took himself. The half-clearance fell to Lee, who struck the ball cleanly for his first goal this season. The home side nearly doubled their lead when Lewis Pepper hit a cracker against the post. Aztecs then took their foot off the pedal and let the opposition back into the game, when a long shot from the right looped over keeper Conor Sherry to level the scores. After West Hallam lost one of their players with a dislocated shoulder, the game ebbed and flowed from end-to-end until a misunderstanding between Bart Banks and Regan Major enabled the away side to sneak a second goal before the break. The managers demanded a big second half from Aztecs and they responded positively with more intelligent play in midfield. Substitute Will McDonald-Lowe was effective on the right wing and linked up with Billy Owens, Birks and Banks several times. Major then set up another attack with a towering header which was picked up by Banks who rounded the keeper and tucked away the equaliser. The next 15 minutes were tense as both sides worked hard to get the upper hand. Sherry was called upon to deal with several shots including one from close range. Dutton and Major also made vital blocks and clearances. Jacob Brown and Ross Keeling both played their part in driving Aztecs forward and chances began to come – a shot by Charles Owens and several dangerous corners from Birks and Scott. Eventually Aztecs created the breakthrough as Keeling and Dutton managed to set up Birks for the winner. A final cross from Scott was met by McDonald-Lowe at the far post and he thought he had got a fourth, but he was adjudged to have strayed offside and the final score remained 3 – 2.

TEAM : Sherry, Banks, Pepper, Lee, Major, Scott, Keeling, Dutton (captain), Birks, Griffiths, B.Owens, McDonald-Lowe, C.Owens, Brown.

Spondon Dynamos Yellow Sox      3

Ashbourne Aztecs u9’s Juniors      3

Aztecs got off to a great start with three strikes at Spondon’s goal by James Donlan.  The first was saved by the goalie, the second went just wide of the post, and the third again was denied by the goalie.  The tables turned quite quickly though when Spondon scored from their first attempt on just 5 minutes into the game.  From that point Aztecs were chasing the game, Spondon were attacking the Aztecs defence, George Martin who was having a great game, was being put under constant pressure, as was defender Josh Lee and Ashbourne’s goalie, Ben Johnson.  A perfect cross from Charlie Land to James Donlan resulted in the equaliser for Aztecs and they were back in the game.  Luke Zona was brought on as sub just before half time in an attempt to try and get in front, but all to no avail, the result remained 1-1.  The second half Spondon came out the stronger team; they scored two more goals in quick succession.  Again Aztecs were chasing the game and Spondon must have thought they had this one in the bag.  Ten minutes into the second half Joe Mee was subbed on for Aztecs, changes were made in defence, midfield and upfront, by the repositioning of players.  From this point a greater sense of urgency was injected into the Ashbourne side.  Charlie Land was on the attack when he was brought down by Spondon, thus creating a free kick for Aztecs.  The shot was smashed into the back of the net by Land, he meant business.  With one minute remaining, Adam Leigh threw the ball into James Donlan, who set up a perfect cross for Tyler Burton to slot through the goalie’s legs and into the back of the net.  30 seconds to go, everyone pushed forward but both teams had to settle for a draw and one point each. The Manager and coaches were very proud of their lads for battling to the end and holding onto their 3rd spot in the division.  Man of the match went to Tyler Burton for the equaliser.

Ashbourne Aztecs Pumas u9’s 1

Pegasus Youth                           5

A disappointng result to an exciting match when Pumas lost their sixth straight game but generated more chances than in the all the previous five games combined.

In an effort to get more attack Pumas changed to 2-2-2 formation. Goalkeeper Jack Banks yet again made a string of fine saves despite being under the weather, well done Jack.

At the back were Thomas ‘The Wall’ Barkes and Regan ‘Destroyer’ Ford. They both did well to hold the attacking Nottingham based forwards. Regan had a particularly good game especially when Pumas were pushing hard late on.

The change in formation put a lot of onus on midfield to battle hard. In that respect Pumas had Conor Phillips as the mainstay holding the centre as much as possible to free up his partners George Lee Mallinson or Eric Prince to get forward to support the attack. However George had to come off from half time feeling ill.

Pumas played with two forwards with the pacey Thomas Harris pairing up with Mawell Bishop or Theo Rodgers. The forwards caused plenty of problems and Pumas had good chances to score.

The early exchanges were pretty even but a goal from a smart passing exchange led to a Pegasus goal and about 15 minutes in it was 2-0. Pumas continued to press and after several good moves resulting in a few goalmouth scrambles plus the frustration of some good efforts by Harris and Bishop being saved they got their reward. A nice move freed up Thomas Harris on the right he cut in and powered a fine strike from the right.

This galvanised the team and the five minutes both sides of half time were very exciting as Pumas and Pegasus traded blows. In fact the physical aspect of the Nottingham team resulted in a string of fouls as Thomas Harris, Conor Phillips and Maxwell Bishop were dumped when attacking. One challenge resulted in a free kick on the edge of the box, which must have been close to a penalty. The resulting free kick from Thomas Harris was hurriedly cleared.

However as appears Pumas' fate a deflection from a corner flew into the top corner and Pegasus had regained authority. Pumas continued to push hard but by commmitting too many forward it left the midfield to Conor Phillips to run solo and Regan to man the pumps at the back. Two late counter attacking goals resulted in a pretty comprehensive victory for Pegasus.

Allestree Lyon Under 11's          1
Ashbourne Aztecs Under 11's    1

After a week off due to the previous weeks cup game being awarded to Aztecs because the opposition could not field a team, the lads were looking forward to a game of football.  The two teams met a few weeks earlier and there was not alot between them then and so it was going to be another close game.  Aztecs started the slightly brighter of the two teams, with the midfield four of Adam and Michael Gerrard, Oliver Thompson and and Sam Remer winning the battle.  Tom Wheeldon playing as a loan striker chased and put the Allestree defense under pressure giving them no time to settle.  Sam Remer made some surging runs down the right wing resulting in a corner.  Michael Gerrard played the ball into the near post where Tom Wheeldon reacted first to score at the near post 1 - 0.  Aztecs carried on playing good attacking football, another corner from the right,  resulted in a great header from Stephen Elliott which bought the best out of the opposition keeper.  Allestree began to get into the game more, they had a corner which Aztecs defended well.  The ball dropped on the edge of the box where a Allestree player bought it down and unleashed a shot in under the crossbar giving Matt Bacon no chance in the Aztecs goal.  The second half was very even but the Aztecs defense led by the impressive Stephen Elliott and supported well by Alex Moss and Jason Ainsworth made sure the opposing team only had a few half chances.  Aztecs played very well but for all their good football could not find the winning goal.  At the final whistle the score remained 1-1, a fair result for both teams.

Man of the Match was Tom Wheeldon for a good performance of hard work, tireless running and a well taken goal.

Team  M.Bacon, S.Elliott, A.Moss, J.Ainsworth, A.Gerrard, M.Gerrard, S.Remer, O.Thompson, T.Wheeldon and C.Pattinson.

Aztecs Give it Five

Aztec U18’s 5 TS Sports U 18’s 1

The score line was kept respectable by some outstanding goalkeeping from the away team. Early on the game was even until Charles Mann converted a penalty and moments later Tom Cresswell crashed in a shot, which was turned in by Ross Hunter for 2-0.

Ollie Sanders  hit a blistering shot just over the bar and Scott Sears saw his unstoppable volley saved by the keeper and the half ended 2-0.

After half time Aztecs began to dominate play with Charles Mann, Sam Froggatt and Will Tomkinson all going close, however it was Tomkinson who added the third from a Mann cross.

Billy Akers in the Aztecs goal put in a competent performance as usual and Callum Redfern, Mitch Coxon, Adam Lomas and Liam Walton-Gibson were both solid at the back and penetrating when they went forward.

Pressure eventually told when Froggatt rounded the keeper to make it four and Aztecs were cruising. But they were caught napping when TS Sports hit a fine individual goal for 4-1. Harry Wibberley and Tomkinson lashed in some telling crosses from the right and Richard Archer step over’s teased the defenders on the left.

Kyran Bell, Archer and Hunter were both denied by some outstanding saves but Mann secured the game when he slotted home the fifth for 5-1, which puts Aztecs in top spot.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             1

Little Eaton Diamonds U9’s                       4

A tough afternoon for the Leopards as a solid performance from the Little Eaton Diamonds saw them run out comfortable winners in the end.

Leopards went into the match missing some key players but they started the game strongly with Aaron Kingaby in goal well protected by Will Birkett and Tommy Cokayne in defence.

Owen Bailey was battling hard to get hold of the midfield along with Calum Wood and Sam Glossop on the flanks. Captain for the day Alex Cheetham was the lone forward working hard to pressurize the Little Eaton goal.

Leopards could have taken the lead when Owen Bailey played in Calum Wood for a shot on goal that the keeper could only parry but Taylor Platt, who had just come on as sub, saw his follow up hit the post before being cleared.

A Leopards corner was then well flighted by Calum Wood and Owen Bailey got in a powerful header that was somehow blocked on the line. Sam Glossop following up also saw his effort cleared as Leopards just failed to get that all important first goal.

Little Eaton then found a way back into the game and took the lead when a corner was only half cleared and the ball was drilled home by the man on the edge of the area.

Jack Beresford came on to try and bolster the defence but Leopards couldn’t stop another Little Eaton break from finding the net and they went in at the interval 2-0 down.

Leopards tried to re-group at half time but it was again the Little Eaton midfield who got on top and two more flowing moves saw them pick holes in the Leopards defence and go into a four goal lead.

Credit again to Leopards though who never know when they are beaten and again they tried to claw something from the game and grew stronger the longer it went on.

A lovely passing move involving Alex Cheetham and Taylor Platt saw the latter play in Calum Wood on the edge of the box and he fired past the keeper to pull one goal back.

Sensing there may be a way back into the game Leopards continued to push and with a little bit of luck there could have been more goals but the game ended in defeat against a very good Little Eaton side who continue to climb the table.

A tough match for the Leopards but they once again kept going to the end and the team spirit that is building well this season was once again on display. Man of the Match was Tommy Cokayne for his tough tackling and never ending hard work.

Duffield Dynamos Eagles            3

Aztecs got off to a bad start in their game on Sunday when the opposition scored an early goal before Ashbourne had chance to wake up and start playing. This was, however, the very important wake up call they needed and pressure was piled on the opposition in defence and there was some great play in the middle from the midfield by Matt Pepper and Luis Zambrano and some fantastic individual work by Lee Cranstone which saw Aztecs nearly draw level. Duffield hit on the break though and despite some fantastic football from Jack Bill and Joe Reed Ashbourne found themselves 3-0 down at half time. Ashbourne came out at half time knowing they shouldn't be 3-0 down and started off well, a brilliant corner by Ben Wainwright was headed in by Joe Reed and minutes after some great determination and passing by Adam Wildgoose and Jake Ridley lead to a great
strike by Kye Gordon getting Aztecs back into it. Ashbourne could have scored lots more but the oppositions defence stayed strong and their goalkeeper saved a fantastic free kick from Adam Wildgoose.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s           1

Hilton Harriers Under 13s                6

As in previous league games, Ashbourne fell to another away defeat after a game of two distinct halves. In the opening 25 minutes, they were bright and made life difficult for the home side, who were not allowed to settle. The central midfield trio of Sam Birks, Regan Major and Josh Dutton complemented each other well and were able to get wide players Ross Keeling and Max Winbow into the game early. Up front, Charles Owens had another great half as the lone striker and put Aztecs one up with a clever shot which drifted past the Hilton keeper. He could have had a second when he produced a smart shot but the keeper turned it round the post at full stretch. Hilton then stepped up a gear and were lively on the right flank but Lewis Pepper and Dan Lee snuffed out any danger with some timely tackles and interceptions. Josh Bailey made a welcome return at right back where he was strong in defence as well as setting up some attacks with his long throws and free kicks. He was supported by Ben Wildgoose who covered well as the right-sided centre-back. Billy Owens was his usual reliable self, catching everything in the air and tipping a drive round the post for a corner. The whole defence were well organised and concentration was good until a Hilton cross was deflected out to the edge of the penalty area. In attempting to close down the shot, Major was unlucky to handle the ball and Harriers were relieved when they converted the spot kick just before the interval. Despite keeping Hilton at bay for another ten minutes, Aztecs could not maintain the momentum they had created in the first half. Jack Dean replaced the injured Pepper and Bart Banks came on for Winbow. Both worked hard to help stem the tide of attacks, but it was inevitable that the home side would eventually take the lead which they did with a soft cross-shot. Hilton then imposed themselves in the middle of the pitch, snuffing out the earlier threat of Dutton and Birks. Whilst Major forced the ball out of defence, Keeling, Dean, Lee and Wildgoose found it difficult to clear their lines and Harriers were soon 3 - 1 ahead from a corner. Lewis Jones came on and added a bit of spark on the right wing. Aztecs continued to try and play attractive passing football, with Owens, Birks and Keeling all getting into good attacking positions, but the hosts were quick on the counter and punished Aztecs with another goal. The visitors never gave up and worked hard to track back in midfield, but Hilton showed their strength as the impressive Charlie Austin bagged his third and fourth goal of the match. Ashbourne are improving each week, but will need to overcome their defensive second-half frailties if they are to progress further.

Allestree Juniors                  1

Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s     5

A glorious autumn morning greeted the under 12’s to Darley playing fields in Derby for their away match against Allestree on Saturday.  Allestree were first to score with a long range high shot from the halfway line into the top of the net, out of the reach of Ashbourne’s goalie, Jordan Burton.  A great goal gave the Allestree side an early advantage, but Harry Zona replied quite quickly with a goal for Ashbourne, which was a ‘tap in’ from Will Farr’s excellent cross.  Some exciting play continued to half time with skilful runs by Sam Legrice, Oliver Reed and Richard Rosewarne.  Tom Hodkinson had many chances upfront but was denied by Allestree’s keeper on several occasions. At the other end, Jordan Burton for Ashbourne was stopping everything which came his way from Allestree.  Half time the score was level and Ashbourne decided it was time to step it up a gear.  They came out more determined in the second half and with Will Farr falling back into midfield, this prevented Allestree attacking through the centre of the pitch.  This resulted in more pressure in Allestree’s half and it was Farr who took them into the lead for the first time with his goal.  Superb defending by Bradley Clowes, Daniel Morton Will Campbell, Oliver Reed and Jack Bowers cleaned up any chances Allestree had.  Harry Zona for Ashbourne was ‘on fire’ achieving outstanding runs down the wing, crossing in the box, picking up the corners and having attempts at goal denied by either the post or the keeper.  It wasn’t long before he achieved his 2nd goal of the game taking the score to a comfortable 3-1. Kacper Stoch was the lone substitution for Aztecs, but oh what a difference he made to the game.  Within a minute of entering the pitch he was right in the thick of it, stopping, crossing, dribbling and taking on Allestree with ease.  Kacper  achieved his first goal of the season taking the Ashbourne goal tally to 4, and Harry Zona responded with his third to achieve a ‘hat trick’ for the team.  The final result 3 well deserved points for Ashbourne Aztecs under 12’s.

Ashbourne Aztecs Lions 4 v 3 Mackworth St Francis

Following an excellent performance in the cup, the Lions continued with a skillful display in the league this week.

In the first minute, an excellent thirty yard left wing cross by Jake Sims was side footed home by Peter Linley. This perfect start gave the Lions confidence with the lively wingers of Jake Sims and Peter Linley constantly causing trouble for the Mackworth defence.

Midway through the first half, Marcus Lumbard collected the ball in the middle of the park, dribbled through four tackles before firing the ball into the roof of the net for 2.0. Shortly afterwards the same player again beat several defenders, before seeing his powerful shot go just wide. With the attacking play becoming dominant Jake Sims again found himself with space on the left to deliver an excellent pass into the path of Marcus Lumbard who ran through to make the score 3.0.

Several lapses in concentration allowed the away side several half chances which were expertly dealt with by Alex Cranstone and his defenders, before a lob right on half time, made the score 3.1.

The second half was much the same with some intricate passing allowing the Lions to create chances for the forward three. Just when the Lions thought they were comfortable, Mackworth broke clear, only to find Alex Cranstone unbeatable. As the nerves were starting to show, the combination of Jake Sims and Marcus Lumbard again undid the defence, and when a perfect pass was played to the on running Marcus Lumbard, he completed his hat-trick and the Lions fourth.

The confident passing was now starting to flow regularly and when five players combined brilliantly to put Jake Sims through on goal, only a good save denied the Lions from the perfect goal.

The Lions relaxed towards the end and two quick goals for Mackworth brought the score to 4.3 and a nervy finish, which the Lions held out to be worthy winners. Special mention goes to all the players this week for an excellent performance both in attack and defence.

Alex Cranstone, Oscar Wainwright, Ben Bryan, Marcus Lumbard (captain), Bradley Keeling, Dominic Simpson-Allsop, Callum Hellaby, Tom Dixon, Peter Linley, Jake Sims, Matt Fearn, Ben Gregory

Ashbourne Aztecs under 9's Juniors 3

Ashbourne lost on penalties 2-1!

An exciting cup round encounter led to an unfortunate result for the Ashbourne Aztecs under 9’s juniors at the weekend.  Etwall, positioned second in their league, and Ashbourne positioned 3rd, meant that this was always going to be a tough game. Luke Zona for Ashbourne was first to kick off the goal scoring with an excellent finish from a Josh Lee free kick.  Collisions between players came thick and fast as each team tried to get the upper hand.  Tyler Burton was brought down twice, once with an injury to his knee and secondly with a bang to his head.  Joe Miller scored his first for the team, which gave Ashbourne a comfortable 0-2 lead.  In the latter part of the first half there was a mix up in the box by Ashbourne’s defence and the ball went in the back of the net, Etwall had pulled one back.  In the second half both teams had good attempts at goal but were denied by Ashbourne’s keeper Ben Johnson and Etwall’s excellent ‘in form’ keeper too.  Shots were coming thick and fast at Etwall’s goal from Toby Ainsworth, George Martin, Luke Zona, Nathan Munro and Tyler Burton, but all failed to reach the back of the net.  At the other end, Etwall were also having chances at Ashbourne’s goal and again a mix up in the box led to Etwall pulling yet another goal back, the result was now 2-2.  A good cross from Josh Lee to Tyler Burton, who then passed to Luke Zona resulted in him achieving his 2nd goal of the game, taking Ashbourne in front once again.  Etwall was awarded a penalty from a hand ball by Ashbourne, but this went wide of the goal.  As the match approached full time, Etwall achieved a third goal and the game finished at full time 3-3.  As this was a cup draw and had to be settled, the under 9’s played extra time, 2 five minute halves but  the score remained at 3-3.  Penalties were now forced upon the teams to settle this second round draw. George Martin stepped up first for Aztecs and placed a brilliant ball in the back of the net, the goalie had no chance of saving, Etwall replied with the same.  Two further penalties were taken by Aztecs but were both saved by Etwall’s goalie.  Etwall achieved a second goal and the game finished 2-1 to Etwall on penalties.  Man of the match was awarded to Luke Zona for his two brilliant goals.

Mackworth 8

Pumas         0

It was a tough cup draw which paired the Pumas against group 1 leaders Mackworth, who had amassed 24 goals in their previous three wins without conceding any.

Yet again an exceptional performance in the first half from Pumas led to their talented opponents turning around with a slender two goal advantage. Dogged defending with tough tackling from the trio of Regan Ford, Conor Phillips and Thomas Barke at the back largely kept their opponents at bay with Jack Banks making several great saves and displaying brave goalkeeping. Midfield was where a lot of hard work was needed as this Mackworth team is a talented bunch. Eric Prince, Theo Rodgers with Nathan Yardley, Morgan Nicholls and Brody Bates on rotation did their upper most to gain possesion. Up front Maxwell Bishop worked tirelessly and there were plenty of promising attacks including a fine long range effort from Eric which just went over the bar.

The second half began with a tough opening five minutes as Mackworth threw everything into trying to put the tie out of Pumas grasp. This included a third goal, which just crept in past a diving Jack Banks, and soon after followed a fourth from the penalty spot after what looked a harsh decision for handball. A series of injuries and rotational tinkering by the coach followed which led to a lack of cohesion in the middle, as we couldn't keep a settled pairing on for long and four goals in the final five minutes resulted.

There were some bright spots in the second half which included a penalty save by Jack, a Conor freekick diverted wide for a corner by a defender's deflection and a through ball chased by Morgan which the Mackworth keeper was just quick enough to prevent Morgan connecting.

Pumas are unlikely to meet such a fine side often in the future and can take pride particularly in a stirring first half performance.  It was also appreciated that the Mackworth coach took time after the game to tell the lads how spirited he thought they were and how impressed he was with their never say die attitude.

Ashbourne U9's Leopards 4

Stanton Ilkeston u9's          3

The U9 Leopards played this cup match against unknown opposition in Stanton Ilkeston . Looking at their league form of previous weeks , it suggested that this would be a tough match .
As in previous weeks the Leopards started brightly and were on top straight away . The defence pairing of Ben Pattinson and Taylor Platt were stopping all of Ilkeston's attacks . They were helped by Aaron Kingaby who also was stopping the opposition from scoring .
The Leopards were also bossing the midfield with the trio of Calum Wood , Leo Cooper and Owen Bailey working hard to get that all important first goal . And it was Sam Glossop who went on one of his mazy dribbles , beating two players and calmly rolling his shot into the goal . 1-0
But because the teams were so evenly matched it wasn't long before Ilkeston equalised to make 1-1 . The game was really entertaining going from one end to the other .
Calum Wood beat two players on the right edge of the box and blasted his shot into the top corner of the net to make it 2-1 . At this point the Leopards should have made their advantage tell by scoring more goals but it wasn't to be . Half time .
Stanton Ilkeston started the 2nd half better and soon got an equaliser 2-2 . Ilkeston suddenly went up a gear and put the Leopards under some serious pressure . They had chance after chance and from a corner they scored a great header that a professional player would have been pleased with . 3-2
Credit to Aztecs they fought back well with Alex Cheetham , Jacob Wibberley-Howe and Jack Beresford tackling well in midfield and defence. Calum Wood got into a good position to cross and his cross shot was not saved and went in through goalkeepers hands 3-3 .
It was anybody's game at this point with both sides attacking at will .Sam Glossop got into the box but was brought down for a penalty . Calum Wood scored the penalty to make it 4-3 . Stanton Ilkeston immediately went on attack searching for an equaliser . A good series of passes gave them a chance to shoot . In the scramble in the box resulted in Aaron Kingaby saving at least two shots , Ben Pattinson blocked another and Owen Bailey eventually cleared the ball off his own goal line . The attack was stopped .
The final whistle came shortly afterwards and Leopards had won a hard fought cup tie 4-3 . All ten players played really well and kept battling 'til the end . They should be proud of their teamwork and spirit . A credit to themselves and Ashbourne Aztecs Football Club .

Special mention goes to man of the match Luis Zambrano whose tireless display was fantastic, a smile never far from his face, he is everywhere!

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s                      1

Littleover Villa Under 13s                            4

Aztecs registered another home defeat against Littleover  but didn’t deserve to be on the losing side after another good quality performance. The visitors threw players forward in the first quarter, but the home defence of Billy Owens, Bart Banks, Regan Major, Dan Lee and Lewis Pepper stood firm and showed much improvement with their heading and clearances from set pieces. Pepper was also impressive going forward with a number of neat passes to set Matt Griffiths and Sam Birks free. As Aztecs grew in confidence, Charles Owens made some great runs and linked up with Liam Scott and Josh Dutton on the right hand side. Ashbourne struck the first blow when a loose ball was met with another accurate strike from Sam Birks to make it 1 - 0. Liam Scott nearly made it two when he almost converted a shot on the turn but it was blocked on the goal line. There were few goalscoring chances for Littleover  in the first half, mainly due to the dogged hustling of Josh Challinor and Josh Dutton, who both had excellent games in the middle of the park. But just on the stroke of half-time, Lee met a high cross with a good header but unluckily, it fell to a Villa boot and the away side were level. The visitors again came back at Ashbourne, with a number of penetrating runs on both flanks, however the full backs Josh Bailey and Lewis Pepper stuck tightly to their markers. Eventually the deadlock was broken by a long shot from outside the penalty area which Owens was unlucky not to save. Replacements Ross Keeling and Jacob Brown brought energy and commitment to the midfield as Banks and Birks both had to go off due to injuries. Villa started to pass the ball around , but Aztecs frustrated them as they continued to deny them any space. Jack Dean replaced Challinor and was immediately in action, using his pace and strength on the right. As Littleover broke on the counter attack, Bailey and Keeling doubled up to defend against the pacy left winger. But it was on the right that Villa finally breached the Aztecs defence with a flicked header at the near post. A fourth followed soon afterwards as Ashbourne’s energy levels dropped a little. However, Aztecs never gave up though, pushing forward on the left flank. Birks went on a great run and cut the ball back perfectly for Griffiths, but his shot struck the underside of the crossbar. Dean picked up the loose ball and sent it back across the six yard box but Birks could not quite reach it and the ball went narrowly past the post.

TEAM : B.Owens, Banks, Lee, Major, Pepper, Bailey, Dean, Challinor, Dutton, Birks, Scott, Keeling, Brown, Griffiths, C.Owens

Aztecs Goal Blitz

Aztec U18’s 18 TS Sports u 17’s 1

The score line reflects a totally one-sided game and credit to the away team for battling to the end.

The statistics are worthy of a mention in addition to some player performances.

Half time read 4-0 with 15 goals being scored in the second half.

Scorers in order of goals Charles Mann 9 who could have had more but he totally dominated the attack; Will Tomkinson continues to improve with 3; Sam Froggatt 2 and could have been 6; Callum Redfern 2 adding to his first ever goal the previous week; Richard Archer 1 and provided some excellent crosses; Kyran Bell 1 in his first run out for the team. Defence and midfield of Ross Hunter, Harry Wibberley, Ollie Sanders, Liam Walton-Gibson, Mitch Coxon, Adam Lomas were highly effective, and Billy Akers in goal was bored.

Dave Sadler and Alex Drummond wrapped up the centre of midfield and were close to scoring their first but for some fine goalkeeping.

Enough said -except this is 6 out of 6 wins with Mann the League leading goal scorer with 17.

Cobra Oakwood U9’s                                  2

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             2

Another strong performance from the Leopards saw them twice come from behind to take a point in an entertaining draw with early season pace-setters Cobra Oakwood.

A change was made in defence with Jack Beresford coming in alongside captain Ben Pattinson but the two of them soon struck up a good understanding to keep Oakwood at bay in the early stages.

When Oakwood did get through they found Aaron Kingaby in excellent form and he made three outstanding saves in the first half but he could do nothing as a well worked corner from Oakwood led to them finding a man unmarked in the box to slot home for 1-0.

Aztecs’ fighting spirit was in full display though, with Owen Bailey starting to get a hold of the midfield, Tommy Cockayne and Alex Cheetham causing lots of problems on the flanks, and Taylor Platt working hard as the lone striker.

Will Birkett came off the bench to add yet more steel to the midfield and following another mazy run from Alex Cheetham which saw him whip in a dangerous cross that found its way through to the back post, Birkett made no mistake to equalize.

Jacob Wibberley-Howe came on to take over the lone strikers’ role and he worked very hard to keep the Oakwood defence busy and try to push forward in search of a second goal.

The sides went into the interval level at 1-1 but Cobra Oakwood started the second half brightly and another well worked move down their right saw them re-take the lead at 2-1.

The Leopards had to fight hard to stay in the game and some great defensive work from Pattinson, Beresford and Birkett (and a little help from the post!!) kept a dangerous Oakwood attack from adding to their lead.

Owen Bailey blocked a thunderbolt free-kick that looked goal-bound and broke up a lot of the Oakwood attacks as the Leopards began to get back into the game and look for a second equalizer.

Pattinson had a free-kick cleared and a couple of good moves ended in frustration as it looked like it wasn’t to be their day, but with a minute to go Bailey and Cockayne combined well to set Platt free and his ball through was met once again by Owen Bailey who slotted past the keeper for a well deserved equalizer.

Aztecs very nearly pinched it right at the end but Platt just couldn’t get on the end of a through ball and the keeper gathered at his feet.

All of the lads were excellent again and the work rate and commitment of each and every one of them really is second to none. Man of the match today was Jack Beresford for a commanding performance in defence.

Ashbourne U10's                                    1

Belper Town Juniors Black Sox U10's   1

Ashbourne had a pretty even match this week with both teams having chances. Matt Pepper and Lee Cranstone pushed forward well in defence and Aztecs had chances saved by Belper's keeper. As well as Aztecs having chances the opposition did also and some great defensive work by Kye Gordon and Adam Wildgoose kept the score equal. The first goal came at the start of the second half when a poorly defended corner lead to Ashbourne going a goal down, however after going a goal down Aztecs woke up and chances fell to Luis Zambrano, Ben Wainwright and Jake Ridley but somehow the ball didn't hit the back of the net until a piece of great individual work by Liam Warner fell to Jack Bill and he managed to give the Aztecs a well deserved point. Again well done lads, keep up the good work!

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 9’s Juniors     3

Duffield Dynamo Panthers Under 9’s    0

The home team sped off to an amazing start with attempts at Duffield’s goal coming thick and fast.  First to score was Luke Zona, the shot was set up perfectly by Charlie Land from a corner, and Luke Zona volleyed the ball straight into Duffield’s net.  A throw in from George Martin led to an attempt by Charlie Land, but this just tipped over the cross bar.  A second corner taken by Charlie Land to Tyler Burton was headed, but was just off target.  Crosses were coming thick and fast from Charlie Land, Toby Ainsworth just failed to complete his goal in the box.  Tyler Burton tripped in the goalmouth, the ref played on, and again Toby Ainsworth just missed the goal with his shot.  A third corner taken by Charlie Land went out to George Martin who had a long distance shot, but this also just missed the goal.  James Donlan then had a couple of attempts, the first was just blocked by Duffield’s goalkeeper, but the latter which was a deflection off the post from Charlie Land’s long range shot, James Donlan followed up nicely to complete, 2-0 to Aztecs.  The third goal was the goal of the match, an excellent header by James Donlan over the goalie’s head. As half time approached James Donlan was denied a further header goal as it went over the top of the cross bar.  The second half started much the same as the first with attempts coming thick and fast at Duffield’s goal, although this half Duffield were putting up much more of a fight.  Joe Miller did an excellent holding job in midfield, booting everything that came his way straight back up the pitch.  Any stray balls were cleared up by Nathan Munro and George Martin in defence.  Ben Johnson, Aztecs’ goalie, had more to do in the second half with Duffield trying also to get their names on the scoring sheet.  Acrobatics on the pitch followed with Joe Miller vaulting over Nathan Munro’s back, all in their desperate attempts to keep a clean sheet for their team.  Joe Mee did some good passing down the wing and Toby Ainsworth ploughed in to release the ball to Tyler Burton for a final attempt on goal, but all to no avail.  The score remained after full time the same as at half time, 3-0 to Aztecs. Great teamwork, but the man of the match award this week went to George Martin.

Saturday 15th October

Heanor Juniors       5

Aztecs Lions           3

The Lions started the game in commanding form. Bryan winning the ball in defense, played to Gregory in midfield, who put the ball wide to Simms, who with a weaving run past 2 defenders, eventually curled the ball round the keeper and into the net.
Heanor then equalised the score with a scrappy shot after some great defending from the Lions and excellent goalkeeping from Cranstone.
The Lions kept going and keeping their shape, the back 4 of Dixon, Bryan, Wainright and Simpson-Allsop were solid, which frustrated Heanor.
A strong Lion's midfield, not letting Heanor play, through some good crunching tackles from Gregory, with Harrison and Barbour picking up the pieces, spreading the ball wide for Linley on the right and Simms on the left.
Lion's second goal eventually came from again good passing between Simpson-Allsop and Simms who eventually put the ball in the box for a easy tap in for Lumbard.
Again Heanor equalised making it 2-2 .
Lions started well after the break with changes made at half time Massey and Hellaby came on for Gregory and Harrison.
Heanor also made changes and upped their game.
Against the run of play after yet again excellent goalkeeping from Cranstone who kicked the ball forward, the ball broke in Heanor's box and Barbour ran through to put the ball in the net.
Heanor equalised again to make it 3-3 and then within a few minutes took the lead to make it 4-3.
Straight from the kick off the Lions attacked again, this time for Linley to be in the box unfortunately he put the ball over the bar.
Lions seem to switch off after this and Heanor settled the match which finished 5-3.
It was a good battling performance from the Lions they were unlucky to lose, man of the match was Alex Cranstone.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s     8

Allestree Juniors Under 13s        2

This was a well deserved cup win which brought a welcome relief from a tough league campaign. Aztecs were on the front foot from the start and created several openings in the first ten minutes. Lovely passing and movement from Ross Keeling, Bart Banks and Josh Dutton opened up the Allestree defence, but shots from Sam Birks and Ross Keeling went straight into the goalkeeper’s arms. Ashbourne finally  broke the deadlock when the visitors failed to clear a Birks corner and Charles Owens hit a screamer into the top corner from outside the penalty box. The home side pressed forward to add to their tally, but were caught immediately on the break when a deflected cross looped up and Allestree were quickest to respond with a header past keeper Conor Sherry. After a nervy five minutes, the defence of Regan Major, Dan Lee, Bart Banks and Lewis Pepper regained their composure and remained really solid, with Billy Owens helping out by breaking up any Allestree attacks. Aztecs picked up their fluent attacking football again, and deserved to go into the interval 3 – 1 up, with goals from Dutton and Birks. Ashbourne maintained their intensity during the second half, with Matt Griffiths and Liam Scott combining well on the left. Banks then crossed for Birks to ram home his second of the match. Josh Challinor, Max Winbow and Ben Wildgoose came on as substitutes and all played their part in some great team moves. Dutton, Birks, Keeling and Griffiths were all showing good ball control in midfield and attack, whilst Owens’ work rate up front was impressive.  Dutton slipped Griffiths in and he made it 5 -1 with a deft finish. The away side never gave up and managed to claw back one goal when Sherry parried a shot, only for an Allestree striker to follow up with a tap in. Dutton then bagged his second when he volleyed home a pinpoint corner from Owens. On the odd occasion Allestree broke away, Major was commanding in his tackling and clearances. More mazy dribbles by Griffiths and Keeling made more scoring opportunities, with Birks and Winbow shooting over and Owens striking the cross bar. Major then started a move from the back, which was flicked on by Dutton to Keeling, whose shot sneaked under the goalkeeper’s body. Another corner from Owens then drifted through everybody and hit the far post.  Scott’s energetic performance was finally rewarded with a long shot into the bottom corner. Aztecs kept playing attractive football till the final whistle which was very encouraging.

TEAM : Sherry, Banks, Pepper, Lee, Major, Wildgoose, Keeling, Dutton, B.Owens, Birks, Scott, Griffiths, Challinor, C.Owens, Winbow.

Sunday 9th October

Riverside                      0

Aztecs Leopards u9’s   2

After the last couple of matches where the Leopards had started slowly, the managers Paul and Lee stressed it was important to make a better start today, this advice the Leopards took on board and followed through.

They started brightly with Calum Wood and Sam Glossop causing Riverside's defence problems.  Also the defence of Will Birkett and Ben Pattinson for Aztecs were as solid as ever, not letting the lively Riverside forwards anywhere near Aaron Kingaby's goal.

Leopards were on the attack all the time. Midway through the first half the breakthrough came. Sam Glossop found himself in the left hand corner of the pitch with two or three defenders around him.  He used his excellent dribbling skills to drift along the byeline to square it for Leo Cooper to tap it over the line 1-0.

The Leopards continued attacking until half time looking for another goal. They started the 2nd half as the first, very positive and brightly.

This was turning into an impressive performance keeping Riverside away from their goal. The trio of Owen Bailey, Jack Beresford and Taylor Platt were working hard and finding a lot of space in Riverside's half of the pitch. It was only a matter of time before the Leopards got a second goal.

An attack led by Calum Wood down the right flank resulted in the ball making its way to Taylor Platt's feet, he turned sharply and shot towards the bottom corner, beating the goalkeeper and heading across the line. Owen Bailey followed up to hammer the ball into the net, but the original shot from Taylor had already crossed the line 2-0.

The Leopards continued to press for more goals, the only shot Riverside managed to get during the whole game was a free kick which was expertly saved by Aaron Kingaby, and credit to him he was still alert after having not a lot to do.

AZTECS PUMAS u9’s  1

DERWENT                    3

Another step forward for Pumas as they scored their first goal of the season in a highly competitive tussle against the Chaddesden based Derwent team, who had just the one defeat in their league campaign to date. This was a performance of great heart and team spirit and we are building a good team here.

Jack Banks returned to take up his position as goalkeeper with Thomas Barke, Bradley Pegg and Morgan Nicholls rotated in defence, captain Regan  Ford played holding midfield, George Lee-Mallinson, Conor Phillips and Eric Prince rotated the wide midfield roles and upfront either Maxwell Bishop or Theo Rodgers played the lone striker position.

Yet again the increasingly disciplined Pumas proved a tough nut to crack in the first half. When the Pegg - Barke partnership which in future will be referred to as 'The Wall' was breached, the Destoyer Ford was on hand to mop up. Pumas were also becoming more confident and had plenty of attacks, corners, shots on goal and provided a lively threat throughout. Ford had a great lob Beckham style in the first half aiming to catch the Derwent keeper off his line, only to see it narrowly bounce wide. The battling display led to Pumas turning around level.

The second half was more open and both teams threatened but it was a bullet header from a great Derwent corner that broke the deadlock with the highly reliable Banks given no chance. A second followed again from a well taken corner. This time a Pumas defender did well to get his body to the ball but a deflection off his shoulder ended up in the top corner. Somehow or other with seven minutes of the second gone Pumas were two down.

Commendably the team spirit, which is Pumas top attribute, kicked in and rather than cave in Pumas pushed forward with greater urgency than ever. Rodgers was proving a threat being hard to knock off the ball and Prince had a great run down the left which ended up with a thudding tackle. After good runs through by Phillips and  Bishop, Pumas got right back into the game with a good run by Lee-Mallinson, squared to Rodgers who fed Phillips on the edge of the box, Phillips then drilled it home right in the 'danger zone' for keepers low and to the left.

The galvanised Pumas threw everything they could into the final five minutes and looked the more likely to score, however Derwent hit a speculative effort right on full time which Banks got across to, but unfortunately could only push into the net off the post.

Aztecs U10's                  1

Spondon Rovers Colts 2

Aztecs’ start to the game was positive and the play through the midfield of Will Topham, Ben Wainwright and Luis Zambrano was excellent. Lots of pressure and superb crossing from Joe Reed lead to a well deserved Aztecs goal scored by Kye Gordon.  Spondon weren't giving up without a fight and man of the match goalkeeper Lee Cranstone kept Ashbourne in it with some fantastic saves. Aztecs went into half time 1-0 up but after the opposition came back stronger and despite some great defending by Adam Wildgoose and some off the line clearances by Jack Bill, Spondon equalised and soon got their winner. Aztecs had the last 5 minutes to equal things out and almost did with some fantastic shots by Jake Ridley and Liam Warner just going wide.  Aztecs give 200% every game and are unlucky to have lost the last couple, management and parents should be proud of their boys.

Cobra Oakwood U11          0
Ashbourne Aztecs U11      1

With both teams evenly matched this was always going to be a very tough game.  Both teams began with some good football being played with the Aztecs midfeild of Adam and Michael Gerrard, Oliver Thompson and Sam Remer working hard and winning tackles.  With both teams finding it hard to break each other down, chances were few and far between.  Finally the deadlock was broken.  Michael Gerrard swung a corner into the box which Oakwood only managed to clear to the edge of the box.  Stephen Elliott took his chance and curled the ball into the top of the net 1-0!  Play continued to half time with good football being played by both sides.  The second half started much the same as the first with Aztecs maybe just on top creating a few half chances that didn't fall at the feet of the hard working Keane Bond.  At the other end the defense of Jason Ainsworth, Marcus Hooley and Stephen Elliott kept the Oakwood chances down to nothing but a couple of long range shots that didn't trouble Matthew Bacon in goal.  Ten minutes of the second half had passed and with all the hard work the players had put in changes were made.  On came the four substitutes Harry Collins, Alex Moss, Tom Wheeldon and Jake Kelly who was making his first appearance of the season.  Even though Aztecs made all the changes at the same time the team carried on playing their football.  Tom Wheeldon put the Oakwood defense under pressure with strong running which almost resulted in a goal for Oliver Thompson sliding in at the far post.  The last five minutes was end to end but the Aztecs held firm and took the victory 1-0, making five from five - a great start.

Man of the Match went to Oliver Thomson who played well up and down the left side and put in a good all round performance.

Team: M Bacon, S Elliott, M Hooley, J Ainsworth, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, S Remer, O Thompson, K Bond, A Moss, H Collins, T Wheeldon and J Kelly.

                 A First for Redfern

Midway U 18’s 1Aztec U18’s 9

An under strength Midway were quickly blown away by Aztecs who dominated this game throughout.

Will Tomkinson headed in the first and Ross Hunter and Sam Froggatt could have added more, but it was Froggatt who hit the second.

Soon after Mitch Coxon crossed for Charles Mann to slam home the third and just before half time Mann headed in to make it 0-4.

Dave Sadler and Alex Drummond controlled midfield and Ollie Sanders, Adam Lomas, Liam Walton- Gibson and Harry Wibblerley protected keeper Akers who had a relatively quiet game.

Midway through the second half, Tom Cresswell picked up a loose ball in midfield and seeing the keeper off his line struck a fine looping shot from 45 yards into the net.

A rash challenge from Akers presented Midway with a penalty, which they despatched for 1-5.

Aztecs stepped up a gear and a Coxon free kick struck the post for Callum Redfern to steal in to score his first ever goal for Aztecs.

Will Tomkinson struck a well taken seventh and Cresswell beat 2 defenders to hit a low dive for the eighth.

The game ended with Froggatt beating the off side trap with his speed and rifle in the final ninth making it 1-9 to Aztecs.

In pre match warm up the Aztecs under 9’s seemed a bit slow off the mark, but once the starting whistle blew, they came out all guns blazing.  They were pushing forward and the majority of the play was in Heanor’s half, it was only a matter of minutes until Luke Zona scored from close range for Aztecs.  The teams were equal in ability which gave the spectators an exciting, entertaining and yet nail biting match to watch.  Aztecs under 9’s had four new players in their midst, Toby Ainsworth, Joe Miller, Adam Leigh and Joe Mee, but they all played like true professionals, the team spirit was immense.  Experienced players such as Josh Lee, James Donlan, Luke Zona, George Martin and Tyler Burton continued to set up great passes for the newcomers and Aztecs were unlucky not to score any more goals throughout.  In the latter part of the second half the Manager strengthened the defensive wall and a last minute outstanding save from Aztecs’ keeper Ben Johnson prevented the under 9’s conceding a draw, and instead coming away champions.  Man of the Match Ben Johnson.

Ilkeston Juniors Under 13s        10

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s     1

Aztecs suffered their heaviest defeat in the last year against the league leaders and title holders. Yet they were the better team in the first quarter. Crisp passing between Bart Banks, Ross Keeling, Josh Dutton and Charles Owens was pleasing on the eye. Regan Major and Billy Owens were also effective in midfield with their tackling and chasing down. Matt Griffiths and Liam Scott were busy on the left. It was therefore against the run of play when Ilkeston scored first as the right winger got behind the defence and tucked the ball past keeper Conor Sherry. Ashbourne showed their resilience with an immediate equaliser, set up by a superb through ball by Dutton, which Keeling ran onto and drilled into the net. Sherry was getting great distance on his kicks, which Owens was heading on or holding up well. Despite resolute defending by Dan Lee and Bart Banks at the back, Aztecs undid their good work as they conceded three sloppy goals from set pieces and went into the break  4 – 1 down, which flattered the hosts. Ilkeston settled into their rhythm better in the second half, not allowing Ashbourne any time on the ball.  The pace of their forwards was causing problems for Ben Wildgoose and Jacob Brown, even though they were dogged in their determination. Lewis Jones came on in the right wing position and showed some lively touches, but the home side were now breaking down their left with confidence and unleashed two powerful shots to make it six. Aztecs’ work rate could not be faulted as Owens, Major, Keeling and Dutton tried to close down space in midfield. However, tiredness was beginning to tell and loose marking allowed Ilkeston to increase their lead with a header from another set piece. An eighth soon followed when Sherry could not keep out a near post corner. The last ten minutes saw a deluge of red shirts launching high balls into the penalty area which Aztecs were not really comfortable with all match; two of these crept their way right across the goal and into the net to bring up double figures, but Aztecs never gave up and battled to the final whistle after another disappointing result.

12 GOALS FOR THE UNDER 12’S

Melbourne United                              2

Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s                   12

Sam Legrice, Aztecs’ captain, opened the scoring for the under 12’s on Saturday with a neat chip over the Melbourne goalie’s head.  Tom Hodkinson followed up with a tremendous second, whilst Richard Rosewarne and Harry Zona had four shots between them denied by Melbourne’s ‘on form’ keeper.  Sam Legrice’s second goal was driven into the bottom left corner and with the scoreline being a comfortable 0-3 up to Aztecs, the first of five substitutions was made.  Daniel Morton was replaced by Ben Warner in defence, followed quite swiftly by Richard Rosewarne leaving the pitch in favour of Kaylem Ocran.  Tom Hodkinson scored the fourth for Aztecs which was almost a mirror of Sam Legrice’s earlier goal in the bottom left corner.  Will Farr added his name to the score sheet, not just on one occasion, but with two goals brought Aztecs in at half time leaders by 6 goals to 0.  The second half started slower on the goal front, Archie Shaw came on to replace Jack Dean and Jack Bowers, who had joined in the latter part of the first half, made his first attempt at goal, but the ball went  just wide of the right post.  Tom Hodkinson was the first to score in the second half and almost had another when a shot was cleared off the goal line by Melbourne.  Tom’s fourth goal was a close call for offside, but the goal was given by linesman and referee alike.  Jack Bower’s next shot at goal deflected off Melbourne’s defender but was awarded to Jack.  Archie Shaw then tried his hand at goalscoring but the long range shot was saved by Melbourne’s keeper.  Melbourne were finally getting into the game, a couple of good attempts were saved by Aztecs’ keeper Jordan Burton but then their third attempt was initially saved, but as the goalie failed to hold onto the ball, it fell into the back of the net for Melbourne’s first goal of the game.  Tom Hodkinson added two more goals to his tally, Will Smith pushed forward from his original position in defence to midfield and this resulted in a second goal for Jack Bowers.  Although Kaylem Ocran put in some good crosses and lined up good goals for everyone else, he didn’t this week manage to put any goals away for himself.  Bradley Clowes cleared Melbourne’s next attempt off the line by the right post and Will Campbell continued to defend solidly. As the game drew to a close, Oliver Reed reentered the pitch, Will Farr had an attempt at goal saved by Melbourne’s keeper, Sam Legrice put in a solid tackle, bringing Melbourne’s winger to the floor, but it was Melbourne who scored a last minute goal which brought the final score to 2-12 to Aztecs.

The wins keep on coming for the u16 with a convincing return win.

The lads pressured from the whistle and within five min Aztecs took the lead with an opener from striker Shorthouse.

However while the lads were still thinking of the opener, Burton Rams took advantage and a long ball over gave them the equaliser within two min.

With a midfield of James Ingram, Josh Dales, Josh Timms and Dan Lear it was like playing six up front and goals from Smith and Shorthouse made it 1-3 going into half time.

With a second half change of the back four to Harry Hellaby, Liam Watson, Josh Timms and Jordan Walton- Gibson to keep the door shut it made the midfield pair of Josh Morris and Josh Dales dominate play.   Jake Smith completed a hatrick and Layton Shorthouse scored an amazing five goals. Not forgetting keeper Mansfield who after saving a couple of long range shots even came out of his area for a couple of saves !!

               Aztec U18’s 6 Anglesey Swifts U 18’s 0

Aztecs swiftly demolished Anglesey within the first 20 minutes and then went to sleep for a spell. In fact within 10 seconds, Charles Mann rounded the keeper to see his shot rebound off the post. Moments later Mann headed on for Dave Ebbrell to beat the offside trap and slot home his first. The second was a carbon copy of the first, Mann header to Ebbrell who slammed in his second, 2-0.

Aztecs continued to press forward and Sam Froggatt who regularly terrorised the way defence, crossed for Mann to hit the third.

Fluid football on the right saw Harry Wibberley and Dave Sadler combine to send Ross Hunter away and his pin point cross found goal hungry Ebbrell who headed in his hatrick and Aztecs fourth.

Alex Drummond was as tenacious as ever in midfield and defenders Adam Lomas, Liam Walton-Gibson, Mitch Coxon and Wibberley were unbreachable .For long periods Billy Akers in goal was a spectator but when called on pulled off a terrific save to maintain the clean sheet.

Roll on substitutions enabled the squad to show their talent and after a slow start to the second half, Ebbrell broke free several times to test the keeper but it was Richard Archer who made it 5-0 with a well; taken left foot drive.

Tom Cresswell and Ollie Sanders provide support from the back on both flanks, which enabled Scott Sears to constantly harass the defenders and provide a telling cross for Will Tomkinson to hit the sixth.

Both Tomkinson, Mann and Sadler were denied by some fine goalkeeping and the woodwork in the last quarter but the game ended 6-0 to Aztecs, making it 4 out of 4 wins.

Aztecs Pumas u9’s 0

Belper                     4

An inexperienced Pumas team played on a hot early autumn afternoon with outstanding effort that you felt only pride at their collective will to win. Where blocks of strong shots led to brave blocks from Samuel Robinson and George Lee Mallinson knocked them off their feet epitomised this growing team spirit.

The team started with the goalie gloves being picked up by usual first pick attacker Conor Phillips in the absence of Jack Banks. In front of Conor Phillips was ultra reliable Thomas Barke who paired up with Nathan Yardley, as usual partner Bradley Pegg was rested. In the middle was captain Regan Ford who was linking in with Morgan Nicholls and George Lee Mallinson both aiming play wide. Up front on his own today was Maxwell Bishop. On the bench ready to put in maximum effort were Samuel Robinson and Brody Bates. Today's heat meant there was a need to rotate to enable water breaks thus all nine played their part.

The first half was very even with chances few and far between. The onetime Belper engineered a strike on goal Conor Phillips somehow managed to tip a fierce shot onto the bar and away to safety. Yet again great teamwork and effort against a well drilled experienced opponent resulted in a level score line at the turnaround. Pumas are becoming better organised, especially at set pieces and before long that elusive victory will come their way. All are due recognision but Thomas Barke is turning into a formidable defender with him and Conor Phillips communicating really well to cover the Belper threat, Maxwell Bishop did extremely well in moving into space as being lone forward requires concentration and plenty of running. Regan Ford led the team well organising the midfield and always trying to pass rather than just lunch it. It is also worth commending the application and sheer will to win little George Lee Mallinson displayed this afternoon.

Yet again the halftime break, where the buzz of playing well subsides, was Pumas' downfall. An early ricochet led to a Belper lad clear and despite Conor Phillips closing him down the forward slipped home the chance well.  Pumas then chased the game a bit trying hard to apply pressure and this led to a breakaway second goal around halfway through the second period. A one on one saw Conor Phillips diving at the striker's feet and somehow the stumbling forward flicked it into the empty net even though he was unaware initially of his success! Such are the margins in this sport. A tiring Pumas let two further goals in during the closing moments to give the final scoreline a more comprehensive appearance than merited.

Ashbourne Aztecs U10's 2 - 3 Spondon Dynamos black sox

Aztecs faced the unbeaten team at the top of the league and started off the stronger side with lots of chances for , Matthew Pepper, Lee Cranstone and Jake Ridley but the first goal came with some great passing and a good strike by Joe Reed, the opposition seemed asleep and this enabled aztecs to push for a second and that was exactly what they got when Ben Wainwright scored a cracking goal from a tight angle on the right hand side. Ashbourne went into half time with a comfortable 2 - 0 lead but they soon realised it wasn't won yet as soon into the second half despite some excellent defending by Liam Warner and Adam Wildgoose, a misunderstanding in the box made the score 2-1 and this raised the oppositions confidence and another was scored straight after. Aztecs were tiring and hot but Spondon were still looking for the winner and found it through an excellent bit of individual football. Aztecs pushed and pushed and nearly had an equaliser through Jack Bill and Luis Zambrano but the game finished before they had chance. A good game lads!

Melbourne Utd. Blue Sox           1

Two equally matched teams had a close encounter on Sunday 2nd October at the Racecourse in Derby.  Charlie Land opened the scoring for Aztecs with a brilliant goal, his celebratory run along the length of the pitch amused the spectators from both sides.  As the game progressed, Melbourne managed to pull a goal back despite brilliant defending from Nathan Munro, Josh Lee and Adam Leigh.  At half time the results and the play remained even at 1-1.  Melbourne’s number 10 was giving Ashbourne’s James Donlan a run for his money in the second half, but despite the beating sun and intense pressure, Aztecs never relented.  It was Tyler Burton’s great goal from the right of the penalty spot that took the Ashbourne team in front once again.  Joe Miller was brought on with Toby Ainsworth to replace tired legs, Joe had an excellent game stopping everything that came his way and booting the ball back down the wing.  Both players helped keep up the pressure in a tough game.  The latter part of the second half tested Ben Johnson’s goal saving abilities which he confidently coped with to retain the under 9’s win.  Man of the match was awarded to James Donlan.

Saturday 1st October

A heat wave at Mappleton on Saturday morning made Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s a little hot under the collar, but for more than one reason.  Aztecs were first to attack Allestree’s goal with a long range shot from Captain Sam Legrice.  Kaylem Ocran followed up but missed the goal by just inches.  A good pass from newcomer Tom Hodkinson to Kaylem Ocran should have lead to Aztecs’ first goal, but this was blocked by Allestree’s defence.  Good heading in midfield by Jack Bowers and Sam Legrice led to Tom Hodkinson taking his first shot at goal, but again this was just wide.  It wasn’t long before Kaylem Ocran set up another goal for Tom Hodkinson, this time Tom completed, 1-0 to Aztecs.  Swiftly Kaylem Ocran again set up another goal but this time for his fellow team mate, Will Farr, to hammer in the back of the net, 2-0.  Daniel Morton was back to full strength working hard on the pitch with Oliver Reed, Will Smith and Jack Dean keeping the ball away from Aztecs’ goal.  Aztecs were doing all the attacking in the first half, another shot went just wide of the post and when Will Farr tried to follow up, found himself and the ball out of play.  The third goal for Aztecs came just before half time with the ‘goal of the match’.  Tom Hodkinson leapt above the keepers hands at full stretch and headed the ball neatly into the top corner (as featured in the photograph).  Second half, a corner taken by Sam Legrice was placed with precision, but unfortunately no-one was there to follow up for Aztecs.  Substitutions were made late on to release players for a rugby commitment and Aztecs lost their whole team shape.  Two goals followed quite quickly for Allestree, one where the goalie was caught off his line and the other followed from a goal mouth scramble.  Harry Zona at the other end tipped his shot over the top of the cross bar and Richard Rosewarne was denied a great attempt by Allestree’s keeper.  End to end play followed with Allestree again having a shot at an empty net and completing nicely, 4-3.  In the last few minutes Jordan Burton pulled off an outstanding save to finish the game with a win for Aztecs, however the last minute pressure for spectators and players alike was a little too much for comfort.

Ashbourne Aztecs Lions 3 v 3 Etwall United

With the Lions under orders to bring their scoring boots, the players took to the field in determined mood to follow their manager’s instructions.

The early exchanges were competitive with chances at both ends. Marcus Lumbard was unlucky with a double chance that was cleared off the line, before Jake Sims just missed a cross with the goal open. At the other end Etwall were creating chances only to be deterred by keeper Alex Cranstone and some last ditch defending.

As the second half started, and scoring boots secured, the Lions followed their manager’s half time instructions with two brilliantly taken goals. First Marcus Lumbard weaved his way through several challenges before firing into the net to give the Lions the lead. Shortly afterwards, his strike partner Jake Sims, beat three defenders before executing an excellent lob over the keeper from 20 yards to make the score 2.0. Etwall, feeling aggrieved by the scoreline, broke away twice to level the score to 2.2.

With the crowd excited, and goals flowing, Bradley Keeling, collected Jake Sims’s corner, to turn and fire the ball into the far top corner for 3.2.

Just as the final whistle was about to blow, a third breakaway for Etwall produced the equalizer and the final score 3.3. The performance was excellent from both teams on a very warm day.

Alex Cranstone was named man of the match for his commanding goalkeeping display.

Toton Under 13s                               4

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s            2

Aztecs were very unlucky to come away with nothing in their first away match of the season after a tremendous team performance. They got off to a flyer with a goal inside the first few minutes. Sam  Birks chased down a ball up front and slipped the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 1-0. Ashbourne built upon their lively start with some neat passing and movement between Bart Banks, Josh Dutton and Ross Keeling, creating a number of good chances for Charles Owens, whose pacy runs forward were a constant thorn in the side of the Toton defence.

Max Winbow put in a good shift on the left and pressurised Toton into making mistakes. Regan Major played a new holding role which allowed Birks and Dutton to get into more attacking positions. Keeling was also causing problems from the right wing and soon set up Owens, who made no mistake with a crisp shot into the net.

At the other end, several runs by the home side demanded decisive tackling by the back four of Bart Banks, Dan Lee, Ben Wildgoose and Lewis Pepper, but they could not keep out a near post corner which was adjudged to have crossed the line. Shortly afterwards, Billy Owens made two great stops and set up a number of attacks with his accurate goal kicking.

Ashbourne were the team coping better with the very hot weather conditions, but they were vulnerable to the overlap on Toton’s right hand side. Replacements Matt Griffiths and Jack Dean came on to bolster that area of the field. Griffiths was soon into his stride and would have scored had it not been for a smart save by the Toton keeper. Keeling, Dutton, Birks and Owens all saw shots creep the wrong side of the post. At a time when the Aztecs’ midfield five were dominating the possession, Toton found a bit of space and unleashed a rocket shot to equalise just before the break.

The second half was a tale of missed opportunities for Aztecs. They were controlling much of the play in the vital areas with Lee, Wildgoose and Dutton  all tackling and intercepting well. Keeling and Birks were able to release Jacob Brown and Charles Owens with some lovely diagonal passes. Josh Challinor joined the midfield with some timely tackles and passes. Banks  and Birks joined up well but neither could find the final ball when Brown was in a good scoring position. Owens then had several one-on-one chances but lacked the composure to find the back of the net.

As legs tired and the heat seared, Toton became the more dangerous team on the counter attack. Their right sided players easily got past the Ashbourne defence. As in previous weeks, Aztecs were unable to clear their lines and despite Owens best efforts in goal, they conceded two own goals in a loose ten minute spell. This was a bitter pill to swallow after such a committed performance by every member of the squad.

TEAM : B. Owens, B. Banks, D. Lee, B. Wildgoose, L.Pepper, J. Dean, R. Keeling, J.Dutton, R. Major (captain), S. Birks, J. Challinor, M. Winbow, M.Griffiths, J. Brown, C. Owens.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U14    8 - 3   STANTON ILKESTON U14

This was a cup match played at Mappleton, from the kick off Aztecs were on the attack, Sanders and Wainwright having shots saved by the keeper. As the game wore on Stanton came more into it and created chances Dawson pulling off a number of saves. Just before half time sander broke through the defence and slotted the ball past the keeper to open the scoring. From the kick off Aztecs won the ball Wainwright powered through and smacked the ball into the net for the second. Within another minute Aztecs were through again Sanders beating the keeper for number three, Stanton were glad to hear the half time whistle.

Stanton started well attacking Aztecs, Dawson saving comfotably, off a long kick Pricket latched onto the through ball and shot into the bottom corner for number 4. Wainwright recieved the ball in mid-field and laid a perfect pass for Sanders to run onto and smack it past the keeper for his hatrick and number 5. Now with nothing to lose Stanton attacked in numbers and in a five minute spell pulled two goals back, could this be the fight back ?. Bond played a great pass through the defence perfect for Wainwright who took it on and smacked in the sixth, Stanton scored again for 6 - 3. Partridge who was moved from defence to play up front picked up a pass from Mc Hugh and stabbed it past the keeper for number 7, five minutes later a through ball from Wainwright saw Partridge net again to finish the scoring at 8 - 3. It had been a good match well contested by both teams with an excellent attitude to playing good football.

Aztecs were on the attack from the whistle and with Alex “Mojo” Munroe Jones firing on all cylinders at the moment, it wasn’t long before he scored the opener for Aztecs.

The goal was soon followed with 2 more from Jake Smith and Josh Timms with both goals being assisting from winger James Ingram.

With Smith injured, Ryan Cundy was soon taking over the attack and fed Layton Shorthouse his opener.

4-0 at half time, the Aztecs defence of Dan Lear, Jordan Gibson, Liam Watson and Matt Burnhope stood strong and another clean sheet was the aim.

With such a sound defence Aztecs kept on the attack and 2 more goals giving Shorthouse his hat-trick.

With back to back victories already achieved, the Aztecs went into the game full of confidence.  Early on, the game was fairly even.  The main threat coming from the tireless running of Tom Wheeldon who broke down the right wing crossing the ball into the box, Keane Bond had the first shot saved by the impressive Boulton Lane keeper only for the rebound to fall at the feet of Michael Gerrard who scored from close range 1-0.  Aztecs began to control the game more and more and a great through ball saw Keane Bond break away from the defence, beat the keeper to the ball and slot it into the net 2-0.  The whole team were working hard for one another, changes were made during the half and the level of play didn't drop at all up until the half time whistle.  The second half started much as the first half ended with Aztecs in control and pushing forward.

A ball was played into the box only for a Boulton Lane defender to handle the ball - penalty.  Oliver Thompson confidently took the ball and fired it into the bottom corner 3-0.  Wave after wave of attacks were thwarted but with about 10 minutes left the ball came out to Jason Ainsworth who scored the goal of the game, firing it in from a full 30 yards out 4-0.  More changes were made and during this period Boulton Lane scored a consolation goal.  The final whistle went with another impressive 4-1 win to Aztecs.

Willington U18’s 0 Aztecs U 18’s 6

A comfortable victory and a third successive away win for Aztecs who dominated this game throughout.

Sam Froggatt , Richard Archer and Scott Sears pressurised Willington from the start and it was Sears who struck the first. Soon after a through ball from Harry Wibberley found Froggatt who coolly controlled the ball in the box and slotted home for 0-2.

When Willington did break they found goalkeeper Billy Akers in fine acrobatic form. Adam Lomas , Liam Walton –Gibson , Tom Creswell and Callum Redfern snuffed out any threatening attacks and Ross Hunter and Charles Mann controlled the centre of midfield.

Aztecs missed several opportunities to increase the score and the half ended 0-2. However after the break,Mann showed his value when he struck a ferocious free kick from 35 yards into the roof of the net for 0-3.

Moments later , Mitch Coxon and Will Tomkinson combined well on the left to slot the ball to that ‘Mann who lobbed the keeper from 20 yards to make it 0-4.

Ross Hunter , Cresswell, Sears and Archer all narrowly missed the target, before Froggatt picked the ball up on the halfway line and left the defence for dead with his pace and neatly slammed in his second.

With 5 minutes to go Tomkinson found Froggat who again used his control and speed to brush off the defenders and hit a low drive for his hatrick and Aztecs sixth.

A good start to a long season.

Ashbourne u10’s first cup draw was against a team from a different group, and although they’d played against the Jaguars previously, the under 10’s were unsure what they’d be up against in Mickleover Jubilee.  The away side came out brimming with confidence and Aztecs started off the weaker team, there was lots of well - handled pressure on defenders Adam Wildgoose and Jack Bill for Ashbourne.  As the game continued it seemed to settle down, and the first goal came for Aztecs through a fantastic run by man of the match Matt Pepper and a great pass by Liam Warner to give Ben Wainwright the opener. There were plenty more chances for Ashbourne to double the score through Lee Cranstone, Luis Zambrano and Will Topham but Mickeover's keeper kept them in it with some wonder saves. The second goal came midway through the second half again after a fantastic tackle by Matt Pepper, Aztecs regained possesion and a great individual goal by Jake Ridley secured Ashbourne’s win.

Saturday 24th September

Ashbourne Aztecs U13 .. 6

A.D.A.S.C. Utd ............ 2

Aztecs had a welcome break from a tough league campaign, with this first round Cup encounter. On a beautiful morning for watching kids play football,

that is exactly what the team set out to do. Aztecs probed away for the first even 15 mins, with wing backs Scott and Banks covering alot of ground

supporting the forwards and helping centrebacks Wildgoose, Lee and Major repel the opposition breaks. One such attack led to keeper Sherry brilliantly

saving a point blank effort to keep the game scoreless. As the half went on, Aztecs` midfield began to take a firm grip of the game, with Birks,

Challinor  and Keeling winning alot of tackles to maintain possesion, and then distributing well to the forwards C.Owens and Grffiths, who tirelessly

ran the channels, leading to quality balls being delivered into the area. Owens`industry and pass on the left led to Aztecs taking the lead, with Birks

finding the net from long range with a shot too hot for the ADASC goalie to handle. This settled the side down, and they then began to dictate

proceedings.A great passing move on the right involving Banks, Keeling and Griffiths led to Birks doubling the scoreline, calmly slotting home from

inside the area. Substitutes Pepper, Brown and B.Owens entered the fray, and slotted into the system without difficulty, helping to produce more

dangerous attacking. Meanwhile, the defenders and keeper were still being kept on their toes, with Major and Lee anticipating and intercepting superbly,

Banks and Scott continued with their all-round work. Aztecs pressure bared more fruit before half time with two more goals. Firstly Keeling accurately

finished off another right side attack, having started the move himself from inside his own half, then after the introduction of Jones and Winbow, Birks

completed his hat-trick with a typical clinical finish.ADASC started the second period with great intent, leading to two smart saves from Sherry. But with

Aztecs still causing danger themselves, pressure in the opposition penalty box led to an indirect freekick being given for the away keeper picking up a

back pass. The re-taken kick allowed captain Scott to power in a drive off the under side of the bar. ADASC never gave up and took advantage of some

tired Aztecs legs, scoring at the far post for a quick response. More changes were made to personell, while Jones and Winbow were looking particularly

comfortable in their unfamiliar roles, and Brown continued to toil upfront. Challinor,B.Owens and Wildgoose tidied up the loose play at the back,

allowing Pepper to find himself space in the penalty box, finding the net with a neat turn and shot for a rare goal.

In hot conditions Aztecs pressed forward until the end, however it was the away team who concluded the scoring, with a cross shot from the left. Griffiths`

wing play caused a late flurry from Aztecs and a scramble nearly ended with Banks pinching himself a goal. With a full squad of 16 turning out for this fixture,

it was heartening to see everyone contribute greatly to the victory and this was definitely a team effort.

Littleover Villa Under 12’s                          9

The Ashbourne side made an early exit from the under 12’s knockout cup, with a heavy defeat at their home ground on Saturday, in the first round.  Littleover Villa was tough opposition, an extremely well organised team who had excellent goal scoring abilities and an unbreakable defensive wall.  Aztecs could tell that their opposition had already played one season of 11 a side football whereas this is a new ‘ball game’ for the Ashbourne team, having played only 9 a side previously. Richard Rosewarne was the first to try and break down Littleover’s wall with his attempt at goal, but found no way through.  Within minutes Littleover went 0-1 up.  Again an attacking duo of Kaylem Ocran and Richard Rosewarne approached goal and again their attempts were blocked.  The first half continued in much the same way, Ashbourne having quite a few chances from Will Farr and Jack Bowers, but achieving no goals.  Littleover, however, had goals in abundance going in 0-5 up at half time.  Sam Legrice worked hard in midfield, as did Will Campbell and Will Smith at the back. Half time team talk consisted of ‘wake up and pull your socks up’, and although Aztecs did better, they were unable to contain Littleover’s winning streak. The lone goal scorer for Aztecs in the second half was Will Farr.

Chellaston Boys 6 v 2 Ashbourne Aztecs Lions

Following two heavy defeats, the Lions went into the game in determined mood. After a promising start, several errors saw the Lions fall behind to a 3.0 score line and with half time approaching a neat finish made it 4.0 to Chellaston.

Managers Hellaby and Allsop took to the field at half-time to change the tactics and bolster the midfield. The second half started in commanding form for the Lions with chances for Marcus Lumbard and Jake Sims. A lucky rebound made the score 5.0 before the game changed for the better. When Jake Sims was pushed in the box, Marcus Lumbard’s penalty was saved. Jake Sims then dribbled between several defenders before firing just wide and the crowd saw a fight back was on.

A long range effort from the defender made it 6.0 against the run of play, before good passing between Jake Sims and Dominic Simpson Allsop created an excellent through pass for Marcus Lumbard to score under the keeper.

With the game closing in, Alex Cranstone, the Lions goalkeeper went for goal from his goal kick, which caused panic in the opposition penalty area, the Chellaston keeper slipped for what was a remarkable goal, only for Marcus Lumbard to score from one yard into an empty net.

There was still time for a final chance for Jake Sims, who’s lob was not quite high enough to beat the keeper. Special mention goes to Oscar Wainwright for his defensive display, being in the right place at the right time throughout the game.

Snarestone  U 18’S 2  Aztecs U 18’s 3

Due to a new rule Aztecs were able to field all 16 players (but not all at once) and they all played their part in grinding out a hard fought victory. After an even 20 minutes Aztecs began to assert their authority with Sam Froggatt, Richard Archer and Scott Sears all going close. However a cross from Harry Wibberley found Charles Man who headed home the first. A corner, saw a Liam Walton-Gibson header steered into the net by that Mann to end the half 0-2.

The game looked safe due to solid defending from Adam Lomas, Ollie Sanders, Callum Redfern and Walton- Gibson. In Midfield Alex Drummond and Dave Sadler made telling tackles and were the supply line for new recruits Mitch Coxon and Jordan Campbell who went close on 2 occasions. To their credit Snarestone pressed forward and caused problems with the long throw  speciality ,ending in a goal for the home side 1-2 and game on.

Will Tomkinson combined well with Froggatt whose cross found Tom Cresswell who was tripped in the area to present a penalty for Mann to despatch confidently for his hatrick to put Aztecs in front 1-3.

But that long throw was to cause problems again and Snarestone snatched a second to make it 2-3.

Billy Akers kept Aztecs victory safe with a series of fine saves in the last 10 minutes and Aztecs stood firm to make it two out of two wins.

Aztecs went into the game looking for back to back victories.  There was one change to the squad from last Sunday, Benedict Broughon coming in for his first appearance of the season.  Aztecs dominated the first twenty minutes but could not find a way past the Little Eaton goal keeper, who turned out to be there man of the match which says how well the Aztecs played.  Finally the dead lock was broken, Keane Bond latched onto a loose ball and strode forward, slotting the ball into the corner of the net 1-0.  Aztecs Stephen Elliot was again dominant in defence making sure it stayed 1-0 until half time.  Aztecs started the second half with advantage of the slope, playing some good football, Aztecs got a corner.  Adam Gerrard played the ball into the near post where Marcus Hooley controlled it, tried to turn but was bought down.  Aztecs were awarded a penalty which Oliver Thompson fired confidently into the net 2-0.  The game was fairly even but Aztecs got caught on the break, Little Eatons forward breaking through and calmly slotting the ball into the net past the on rushing Matthew Bacon 2-1.  Changes were made throughout the game and all players playing there part.  With five minutes to go Tom Wheeldon latched onto the ball from midfield and placed it into the bottom corner of the net 3-1.  Aztec's carried on working hard for one another and just before the final whistle Sam Remer made it 4-1 with a shot from the edge of the box.  The final whistle blew with the lads achieving well deserved back to back wins.  Man of the Match:  Keane Bond for his hard work and energy.

Team:  M Bacon, J Ainsworth, S Elliot, M Hooley, H Collins, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, K Bond, T Wheeldon, O Thompson, S Remer, B Broughton.

Ashbourne Aztecs Pumas u9’s   0

Stockbrook Colts Lions               2

The Pumas started this game with plenty of energy . From the start Regan Ford battled hard in central midfield , stopping Stockbrook attacking . He was helped by strong defending from Thomas Barke and Eric Prince. Jack Banks in goal was also performing very well , saving every shot heading towards his goal . But after 10 minutes Stockbrook scored , 1-0 . Credit to the Pumas they never let their heads drop . The Pumas started putting Stockbrook under pressure.  Max Bishop working hard as a lone striker, helped by Theo Rogers working well in midfield. The trio of Nathan Yardley , Bradley Pegg and Morgan Nicholls were also putting in a huge amount of tackling and effort . The Pumas were looking for an equaliser but couldn't get any clear cut chances .
Stockbrook Colts had soaked up pressure from the Pumas and eventually they made it 2-0 .
The Pumas should be very proud of their effort and performance . Every player worked hard and tackled very well especially in the hot sunshine .
This was a massive improvement as the Pumas lost 14-0 to Stockbrook in a pre season friendly earlier in September . Thomas Barke was man of the match for great defending .
WELL DONE LADS !

Team was ; Jack Banks , Eric Prince, Regan Ford,Thomas Barke,Nathan Yardley,Morgan Nicholls,Maxwell Bishop,Bradley Pegg and Theo Rogers .

Ashbourne Aztecs U10's         2

Mackworth St. Francis Rams  1

Two fairly equal sides met when Ashbourne faced Mackworth St Francis Rams in their second match of the season, Mackworth won their first so the pressure was on for
Ashbourne to deliver something special. After some great passing in midfield through Liam Warner and Joe Reed the ball fell to Adam Wildgoose who really did deliver that
something through a superstrike which defeated Mackworths keeper and put the Aztecs in front. The game was pretty even and Jack Bill and Lee Cranstone had their work
cut out in defence but with some superb saves from keeper Ben Wainwright managed to keep Ashbourne in it until the last kick of the first half when a spell of pressure and
a fantastic shot lead to a goal to level up the scoreline. After half time the play was much the same with chances for both sides and chances for Ashbourne to go ahead
through Matthew Pepper and Luis Zambrano, Ben Wainwright did exceptionally well in goal denying some fantastic efforts by Mackworth. The winning goal came through
some fantastic individual play from Kye Gordon as he ran past 3 players and slotted it past the goalkeeper to give Aztecs their well - deserved first win of the season.

Ashbourne Aztecs Leopards U9’s             2

Cobra Oakwood U9’s                                 3

A tough battling game between two well matched sides ended in a narrow defeat for the Leopards.

They were dealt a blow before kick-off when their regular goalkeeper was declared unavailable and so Jacob Wibberley-Howe stepped in for his first performance in goal for the Aztecs. He had already made one good save when a ball through the middle of the Leopards defence caused problems and Cobra Oakwood scored a good early goal to go one-nil up.

Alex Cheetham then took a blow to the ankle and had to substituted in some discomfort and was unable to take any further part which again was a blow for the Leopards as they were down to just one substitute available in extremely warm conditions.

However, Aztecs put these troubles behind them and started to dominate the game. Will Birkett and Ben Pattinson looked solid in defence with Owen Bailey holding everything together in centre midfield. Tommy Cockayne and Calum Wood were causing trouble on the 2 flanks and Jack Harding was causing problems for the Cobra Oakwood defence.

Jack Beresford came on to add a fresh pair of legs and another good Aztecs move led to a corner just before half time. Calum Wood whipped in a great cross that the keeper couldn’t deal with and he could only help it over the line to send Ashbourne in level at half time.

Ashbourne came out for the second half trying to pick up where they left off but a good Cobra Oakwood move on the break finished with a thunderbolt strike to put them 2-1 up. As Ashbourne tried to re-group they were caught again and found themselves 3-1 down with time running out.

To their credit, though, the Leopards never stopped trying and the Cobra Oakwood keeper made a couple of good saves to keep Aztecs out. Late in the game one of those saves led to yet another Aztecs corner and another well flighted delivery from Calum Wood caused more problems and a Cobra Oakwood defender handled the ball for a penalty.

Calum Wood stepped up to confidently drill the ball into the corner to make it 3-2 but there wasn’t enough time to find the equalizer and a brave battling performance ended in defeat this time for the Leopards.

All the lads played well in tough circumstances and the management team were very proud of the spirit amongst them. Man of the match was Will Birkett for a commanding performance both in defence and when asked to step up into midfield.

Allestree Juniors Valencia          2

Ashbourne Aztecs u9’s Junior’s  1

Sunday morning’s fixture at the Racecourse in Derby was a huge ‘wake up’ call for the under 9’s Juniors.  After winning last week’s game 10-1, the under 9’s were a little complacent about their capabilities on the field.  They came up against tough opposition in Allestree Juniors Valencia, they were strong in defence and on the odd occasion that Aztecs broke through their defensive wall, the goalkeeper cleaned up nicely.  The game started 1-0 up to Allestree with Ben Johnson, Aztecs’ goalkeeper, being put under constant pressure by Allestree’s strike force.  Luke Zona, Tyler Burton and James Donlan continued to battle hard but were finding it difficult to get back into the game.  Just before half time, Charlie Land pulled a goal back for Aztecs, which lifted his fellow team player’s heads instantly.  Second half Ashbourne came out stronger, but with injuries and substitutions coming thick and fast, Ashbourne lost all shape.  Josh Lee, Nathan Munro and George Martin all had good second halves and Adam Leigh, who was making his debut appearance for Aztecs, created some good chances for Joe Miller on the wing. The under 9’s face their first cup match next weekend so will now need to train hard this week in preparation for the ‘knock out’ competition next Sunday.  Man of the match was awarded to Josh Lee.

Ashbourne Aztecs Jaguars u10 1

Mickleover Jubilee u10             2

The Jaguars lined up for their second ever league match and expectations were high after last weeks battling 1-1 draw.

The game started well for the Jaguars with Kai Kirkpatrick making some excellent runs as centre forward. Josh Taylor-Grout worked hard in midfield making some last ditch tackles and foraging forward runs.

Jaguars soon took a deserved lead, the goal came after some excellent work by Callum Riley who passed the ball forward for Tom Wright to run onto. Tom cooly slotted the ball past the keeper.

The second half began with Mickleover applying the pressure which The Jaguars managed to soak up with some excellent defensive work by Jake Stafford and Charlie Scattergood. On the occasions when a shot was taken, Jake Wheeldon made some fantastic saves. Mickleover continued to dominate and despite some quick breaks by Liam Wibberley and determined tackles by Joseph Brooks a goal for Mickleover looked on the cards. Unfortunately the Jaguars conceded 2 quick goals from well taken long range shots.

However the Jaguars heads stayed high and they pushed for an equaliser. Late on they won a free kick which Josh launched from 20 yards but it hit the post and landed in the keepers arms. The referee however gave the goal but after discussion with both the managers and referee the goal was correctly ruled out. The game ended 2-1 to Mickleover. Well done to all for another battling performance. Man of the match was the goalie Jake Wheeldon.

Ashbourne Aztecs Under 13s          1

Spondon Dynamo                            6

This was definitely a game of two halves which ended in a second consecutive defeat for Ashbourne. The first half found Aztecs wanting at the back as Spondon played some fluent attacking play, aided by the strong wind. The home side took a while to adjust to the pace of the game and went behind from a penalty after Josh Challinor was harshly judged to have handled the ball in the area. Growing in confidence, the visitors fired in another goal on the fifteen minute mark.  Shortly afterwards, a cross from the right was parried into the net by keeper Billy Owens. It was only then that Aztecs started to get hold of the ball in midfield as Josh Dutton and Sam Birks showed some skilful touches. The wide players Charles Owens and Bart Banks played more narrowly and began to restrict the space of their opponents. The best chance of the half then fell to Birks, who hit a fierce free kick against the crossbar. However, the visitors were much more alert to the second ball and punished some poor marking from set plays, going into the interval five goals up. The second half was a totally different ball game, with everybody in the Aztecs side increasing their work-rate and commitment. Regan Major was competing well in the air and on the ground and bringing Matt Griffiths and Liam Scott into the game down the flanks. Birks and Dutton were also winning tackles and setting up some more effective attacks. Ashbourne got their reward for the positive attitude when Major won a header and fed a pass through to Scott, who tucked it past the Spondon keeper. The back four of Dan Lee, Ben Wildgoose, Ross Keeling and Lewis Pepper  grew in confidence as they won more tackles and kept Spondon’s goalscoring chances down.  Billy Owens was solid in the goal and made two smart saves with his feet. More opportunities emerged as Pepper, Birks and Griffiths combined down the left. Two crosses from Griffiths caught the Spondon defence out but Scott could not convert either as he arrived at the far post. A final push by Keeling saw a superb dribble and cross-shot but again, it was not quite on target. Despite the defensive attentions of Challinor and Dutton in front of the back four, Spondon mounted a final attack and the mellay in the Ashbourne penalty area ended when Keeling was unfortunate to knock the ball into his own net to leave the final score 6 – 1.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS U12’S 3

HEANOR JUNIORS U12’S      2

Within the first few minutes of kick off, Aztecs were attacking Heanor’s goal.  Heanor on the return, were awarded a free kick from distance, which narrowly missed Ashbourne’s goal.  The tables turned again as Ashbourne were awarded a free kick, this was taken by Will Farr, but narrowly missed the back of the net.  The away side pushed forward but Will Campbell and Bradley Clowes cleared everything which came their way, the home side at the other end had a long range shot saved by Heanor’s ‘on form’ keeper.  Oliver Reed came off for Aztecs after receiving a ball in the face and an injury to his ankle, Ben Warner entered the pitch.  Heanor were on the break through Aztecs’ defence and came up against keeper Jordan Burton, although he tried to block the angle, Heanor achieved their first goal of the match.  In return Will Farr attacked Heanor’s goal but all to no avail.  Jack Bowers shot towards goal but again was denied by Heanor’s keeper. The visitor’s second goal came from a ‘one on one’ with the keeper, placing the ball neatly in Ashbourne’s net.  The remainder of the first half saw end to end play with Harry Zona sprinting down the right wing, Jack Bowers working hard for Aztecs and Ben Warner flying through the air like superman as he made his attempts on goal.  Half Time whistle gave Aztecs a chance to regroup, reflect and come out all guns blazing for the second half.  A couple more attempts were made by Kaylem Ocran, the second being punched out by the keeper and being finished by Harry Zona for Aztecs 1-2.    The next break for Aztecs came when midfielder Sam Legrice slotted the ball through for Jack Bowers, but unfortunately the shot was saved.  Kaylem Ocran then scored on his next attempt for Aztecs equalising 2-2. On the return , Jack Dean stopped Heanor in their tracks, 15 minutes into the second half Ben Warner charged through five of Heanor’s players to score for Aztecs, now 3-2.  An excellent free kick followed from Sam Legrice which was saved again by Heanor.  Will Smith pushed forward from defence, lined up an excellent ball for Archie Shaw but this was saved from close range.  At the other end Heanor’s shot on goal was cleared off the line by Ashbourne’s Harry Zona, a sigh of relief went out from the Ashbourne supporters.  Kacper Stoch entered the field to replace tired legs and Oliver Reed came back onto retain Aztecs’ lead.  The final whistle, an excellent well fought game by both sides but the right result for Aztecs.

Codnor u9s 3 Pumas u9s 0

The Pumas showed significant improvement from their pre season friendly to
play their part in a tough, well contested gamed played in a commendable
spirit by both teams. As is the policy for Pumas all players get a chance
to develop their game by using roll on roll off subs. This helps all the
lads to get used to fitting in with each other especially new members. The
first half started with the formidable duo of Thomas Barke and Bradley Pegg
in defence. They have developed a good understanding putting in some
crunching tackles. Eric Prince thrived in centre midfield helping the
defence and getting forward to support Conor Phillips. Maxwell Bishop and
Regan Ford played wide midfield and as the game progressed  both thought
cleverly to generate space playing good balls in to Conor. Upfront was
Conor who worked hard to follow instructions to find space and often had to
move wide to do so. Theo Rodgers came on and played a number of roles
including midfield and upfront putting some good tackles in and passing
well. Samuel Robinson came on in defence and did well including bravely
blocking one hard shot. Morgan  Nicholls impressed coming on in midfield
looking for space and marking up nicely. Nathan Yardley put in plenty of
effort when coming on getting stuck-in both  in defence and midfield. Jack
Banks took the green jersey and showed himself a natural brave stopper. One
of the most important aspects of this role is to help building from the
back. As the game progressed Jack's distribution to Max and Regan enabling
Conor to be fed led to some of our best football. A battling first half
display was fairly reflected in the 0-0 scoreline. The first few minutes
after halftime are important times to get concentration up. Unfortunately
Codnor took advantage and were one up almost from the restart. Not long
after a bundled second was followed by an unstoppable volley. 0-3 was
tough on Pumas, however this was a big step forward. Well done lads.

Neatherseale U 18’S 0  Aztecs U 18’s 1

Aztecs began their campaign in the Burton Junior League with a narrow 1 goal win over Neatherseale who made them battle for the points. However the statistics will show that Aztecs should have bagged more goals having 27 attempts on goal and numerous corners.

Charles Mann led the way with several close range efforts, Alex Drummond and Dave Sadler were both denied by good goalkeeping. A solo run from new boy Harry Wibberley ended with Wibberley wobbling the bar with a cracking shot.  Neat combination work between Ollie Sanders, Mann and Sam Froggatt saw the latter player fire just wide and the first half ended 0-0.

Billy Akers in goal gave an assured performance and was well protected by Wibberley, Sanders, Liam Walton-Gibson and Adam Lomas.  Scott Sears caused problems on the right with numerous mazy runs and the effervescent Richard Archer had several shots saved by the keeper.

As the game wore on, Neatherseale grew in confidence and tested Akers, giving the frustrated away fans palpitations. However their frustration was eased when Liam Walton – Gibson rose to hammer in a header from a corner 10 minutes from time.

Ashbourne Aztecs U9s Leopards 3

Belper Town Black Sox                2

Leopards had their first game of the season at the Racecourse in Derby. Leopards started brightly and confidently for saying that it was their first competitive game of football on grass. The defence was good with goalkeeper Aaron Kingaby marshalling Ben Pattinson and William Birkett well. The midfield trio of Alex Cheetham, Leo Cooper and Calum Wood were also playing well and it wasn't long before all the Leopard’s pressure lead to a goal. A sweet low shot into bottom corner of Belper's net from Leo Cooper, one nil to Aztecs. Sam Glossop was causing problems for Belper’s defence playing the lone strikers role. Also Leopards were helped by Tommy Cokayne and Taylor Platt coming off the bench and getting straight into game and contributing to the team effort.  However in the pursuit for a second goal, the Leopards got caught with two players up field and Belper managed to get an equaliser. Leopards continued to press forward but once again they were caught on the break and Belper scored again to take the lead. Halftime gave the Leopards time to regroup and they started the 2nd half well with strong tackling from all of the players. Leopards were looking for a second goal with plenty of shots on target. They kept battling well and never let their heads drop and a long range shot from his own half by Ben Pattinson caught Belper's keeper out 2-2. Leopards now sensed that they could win the game and continued to dominate the game. This resulted in a shot that the keeper could not hold and Alex Cheetham followed up and put the ball into the empty net, 3-2. Shortly after the referee blew for fulltime.  Leopards played well throughout and worked hard for a well deserved win and a great start to the new season.
All the team played well and worked hard as individuals and as a team.

Team was : Aaron Kingaby,Ben Pattinson,William Birkett,Leo Cooper,Calum Wood,Sam Glossop,Alex Cheetham,Taylor Platt and Tommy Cokayne .

Ashbourne Aztecs U 11's         4
West Hallam Red Sox U 11's    0

The game started evenly with both teams glad to be back playing.  The midfield of Adam Gerrard, Michael Gerrard and Harry Collins began to take control of the game and linked well with the forwards Keane Bond and Tom Wheeldon.  Aztec's were pushing forward with more and more purpose.  Keane Bond picked the ball up on the edge of the box only to be fouled.  The ref gave a free kick, Michael Gerrard took control and struck it perfectly into the top corner 1-0!  The half continued in the same vain with Aztec's dominating, Keane Bond was giving the West Hallam defenders no time and was bought down in the box giving the ref no choice but to give a penalty.  Keane got off the floor to take the penalty only for the West Hallam keeper to make a top class save.  Aztec's continued to play good football when they were rewarded with another free kick almost in the same place.  Up stepped Michael Gerrard with almost a carbon copy free kick.  2-0.  The back four of Stephen Elliot, Marcus Hooley, Alex Moss and goalkeeper Matthew Bacon played very well dealing with everything West Hallam could create.  The second half began in the same way as the first half with both teams competing well.  Aztec's made changes throughout the game bringing on Jason Ainsworth, Oliver Thompson and Sam Remer.  Aztec's had a corner midway through the half.  The ball was played into the box where Sam Remer lashed it into the net from the edge of the box 3-0.  More changes took place with West Hallam having a rare chance on the Aztec's goal which Matthew Bacon dealt with superbly, coming off his line, making himself look as big as possible and taking a clean catch.  With only five minutes left Aztec's forwards combined well down the left wing for the ball to end with Stephen Elliot who placed it into the bottom corner 4-0.

Team:  M Bacon, S Elliot, M Hooley, A Moss, A Gerrard, M Gerrard, H Collins, K Bond, T Wheeldon, O Thompson, J Ainsworth, S Remer.

Ashbourne Aztecs U16’s      2

Willington Wanderers U16’s    2

Aztecs were looking to build on their impressive start in pre-season by gaining a win in their first game against last seasons league champions Willington Wanderers. Aztecs had made a few acquisitions in the summer getting players from Burton Colts to join them and these players started brightly with Josh Morris playing in Jake Smith to fire just past the post. After 15 minutes though Willington grew stronger and took the game to Ashbourne forcing defenders Liam Watson and Harrison Avery to produce some quality defending to stop the Willington attack.

Aztecs went into the break level at 0-0 after a tough first half against a resilient Willington. After the break Ashbourne were wrongly disallowed a goal after Leyton Shorthouse took the ball down and finished coolly from a free kick by Morris only to see his efforts ruled out by the flag. Ashbourne then started to struggle and Willington capitalised on this by scoring after the ball trickled over the line after a one-on-one where keeper Mansfield was unlucky. Willington then showed why they were champions last year by scoring again after a turn and shot was pushed onto the post by Mansfield before hitting the back of the net. Aztecs looked dead and buried but persevered and after the ball broke to Monro-Jones 25 yards out, he smashed it in after it proved too hot to handle for the Willington keeper. Ashbourne then continued to press and after great work by Morris in the midfield he played the ball through to Smith whose initial shot was deflected off the keeper and back into his path for him to stroke into the net to level the scores at 2-2.

The referee blew his whistle for full-time and Ashbourne had come away with a well deserved draw that they would have taken at the start of the game however on reflection maybe they should have benefited from earlier chances. A steady start to the season though for Wayne and his lads.

ASHBOURNE AZTECS JUNIORS U9’S      10

The under 9’s got the season off to a ‘flying start’ with a 10-1 win over opposition Stanton Ilkeston on Sunday morning.  This is the u9’s first season of competitive football in the Derby Mini Soccer League and they rose to the challenge admirably.  The huge goal difference came from great passing between the front three of Charlie Land, James Donlan & Tyler Burton.  Luke Zona worked tirelessly in midfield; both George Martin and Nathan Munro stopped any attacks at Aztecs’ goalkeeper Ben Johnson.  Goals came thick and fast throughout, Tyler Burton scoring 4, Luke Zona 2, Charlie Land 2 and James Donlan 2.  Josh Lee came out of injury for Aztecs to help out extremely tired legs and keep up the pressure on Stanton Ilkeston.  Man of the Match was awarded to Charlie Land for his work rate throughout and his outstanding goal from distance.

Ashbourne  Aztecs  Under 13s      0

A.D.A.S.C   Under 13s                     7

This was a disappointing result to start the season off, but the score line was a little harsh on Aztecs. The home side quickly got into their stride, especially down the left side, where Liam Scott and Matt Griffiths both went on dangerous runs. There were some neat touches from Sam Birks and Will MacDonald Lowe but the weight of their passing let them down as they tried to get forwards Charles Owens and Regan Major into the game. But it was A.D.A.S.C who struck the first blow with a well taken turn and shot in the penalty area, followed by a long shot which floated into the far corner after Aztecs had conceded the ball at their own throw-in. At 2 – 0 down, Ashbourne did create a few chances. Josh Dutton won a series of great tackles in midfield and he and Sam Birks set up Scott, Owens, and Griffiths, who all had shots at goal. Billy Owens, in the unfamiliar position of right back, was impressive in the tackle and concentrated well against their busy left winger. Conor Sherry was also alert in goal, keeping out a number of shots and coming to claim a number of loose balls. There was then a period of pinball in the A.D.A.S.C penalty box, but Aztecs could not find the net. By half-time it was 3 – 0, as the opposition strike force again got behind the centre backs Dan Lee and Ben Wildgoose. After the break, Aztecs were looking for some resilience to come back into the match and Jack Dean, Ross Keeling, Bart Banks and Jacob Brown came on to add some energy. Banks was bright on the left wing for a while and found himself in the A.D.A.S.C penalty box after two mazy runs. Scott was also proving to be a handful as he pushed on, this time on the right flank. However, the wide midfielders forgot their defensive duties on several occasions, which exposed the Ashbourne defence, who were overrun by a confident A.D.A.S.C front line. Too many loose balls were not dealt with and the score was soon increased to 6 – 0 after vital tackles were missed. Major returned to produce a couple of spurts on the right and also delivered a good corner which Dutton struck well, but the ball was deflected narrowly wide. Dutton also cut through the visitors’ defence from the left, but Brown could not connect with the pass. Despite some stoic defending by Sherry, Lee and Keeling in the last ten minutes, A.D.A.S.C netted their seventh after another missed clearance, completing a dismal morning for Aztecs.

Chellaston Boys Athletics 12 v 0 Ashbourne Aztecs Lions

The season started with great excitement following a high scoring start for the Lions last season. With home and away matches now programmed and eleven a side, the Lions started slowly against a very energetic team, which was full of running and excellent passing ability.

Shortly into the game, the Lions fell behind to several quick goals to be down 0.3. The crowd suddenly burst into life, when Jake Sims was tripped in the box and a penalty was given. The same player saw his penalty saved and following a high bounce on the rebound the follow up shaved the top of the bar and the chance lost. Chellaston scored two later goals to break at 5.0. The second half was much the same, with seven further goals to the home side.

In patches the Lions performed well with Jake Sims lively, and Dominic Simpson Allsop and Marcus Lumbard constantly trying to create chances, but all to no avail.

At the end of the game, Chellaston admitted to playing 11 a side last season and at a much higher level, suggesting the Lions will not face such excellent opposition every week.

Credit goes to goalkeeper Alex Cranstone for an excellent and committed display in keeping the score down.

Ashbourne Aztecs u12’s                                      8

Ashbourne Aztecs travelled to Loughborough in Leicestershire for their first match of the season.  Within the first three minutes Loughborough went 1-0 up, this was the wake- up call Aztecs needed.  Jack Bowers pulled one back for Aztecs in quick succession, but the Ashbourne team continued to struggle against the wind and constant pressure from Loughborough.   Goalie Jordan Burton, defenders Will Smith, Will Campbell and Bradley Clowes were under attack from the Loughborough side, but thankfully cleaned up nicely. Harry Zona had some good runs down the right wing, crossing excellent balls into the box for Will Farr to finish.  After a couple of near misses, Will Farr settled in and scored two excellent goals for Aztecs.  Five minutes before half time Jack Bowers achieved his second goal, a long range well placed shot which took Aztecs into the break 4-1 up. Ben Warner, Archie Shaw and Daniel Morton came on for the second half playing some good football, the best of which came when Archie Shaw achieved his first goal for Aztecs with a volley over the keeper’s head.  Will Farr, who was having an excellent game, achieved a further ‘hat trick’ in the second half taking his personal goal tally to 5.  Although no further goals followed in the latter part of the second half, Aztecs continued to battle with tired legs to the final whistle, a real gutsy performance.
